History. The FO is trying to be the empire, right? Well, in that system promotion was cutthroat and rapid, but so was the rate of attrition of the leadership under Vader and the Emperor. Snoke has demonstrated the same viciousness and there is no reason to believe it wouldn't be similar. Well, other than Snoke specifically calling out Hux as rabid curr that has its uses...

So based on nothing but your opinion. Well as you can see this is all the writers have to go on and they came to a different conclusion. You seem to want writers to be superhuman when their skills line in reeling a yarn.

A starfighter could probably just turn to avoid the ISD and slam down the hyperdrive throttle for a second to jump somewhere. Trying to turn something the size of Profundity or even a Nebulon B would take a bit of time. Vader didn’t exactly wait to open fire.
im sure in the novelization, Vader intentionally chose the most likely escape path as his entry, but for now we have to accept that plot demanded he jump in there
Edited by Church14They came to a different conclusion because they didn't wargame the scenario. As a result the story is hugely flawed. Like I said, it doesn't take a genius to figure this stuff out.

Sure, some of the ships didn't get to make the jump for plot reasons, the profundity could have been hit in the engineering section on the opening salvo which crippled its hyperdrive. Others may have needed to recalculate the jump, but the rest could have and may have escaped. We just didn't see any other vessels escape.

How does this address, in any way, the discussion we are having about crappy storytelling in the IP we all presumably love?

It was like bullseyeing a wamp rat from orbit, in the middle of a sandstorm. That is if the safeties didn’t kick in first and dump you out of lightside before you could even impact.
So, Kidsnickers, that was a one in a million shot.
(PS. If your name isn’t a tribute to MST3K/Hobgoblins I apologize)
The only reason it worked on Holdo is because she was able to turn around and get close enough to "line up" her shot without being destroyed. Hux told them to ignore the ship until he realized what it was doing, but by then it was too late. If he had ordered them to fire from the start, she never could have made the jump.

So how do you propose to achieve this?
You don't need to be an engineer to set down rules for your universe and follow them and stick to them. My chief complaint about TFA and TLJ is they don't really bother with any of the rules of the universe and break them quite cheaply and quite lazily. Both of those films thought the rules were simply a carpet to be pulled out from under the audience.

"Your" is the IP within which you are working.

You do need to be a human to set down rules.

For frell's sake. We have well established rules for Star Wars. TFA and TLJ just threw them out whenever they were inconvenient to where they needed the story to go.

What are these rules? Where are they written down?
You guys seem to be thinking that there is a checklist for writers to follow. This isnt the universe they created or designed, its one they are working in, and in case you hadnt noticed very little is cannon anymore so any rules there were did indeed get chucked out the window. There is no quality control as there is no owner of the IP checking everything.

That comes across kinda strawman-y.
I get where @Frimmel is coming from. If you establish certain criteria like not being able to just jump to hyperspace because the computer needs to calculate jumps, thus avoiding going right into a star or black hole, it seemed a bit strange when they jumped out onto a planet in TFA or used the ship's hyperspace jump to split a big ship in half.
I guess it comes from my time playing TIE Fighter, but I thought there were hyperspace buoys they used to jump from point to point safely. Thus, why interdictors were useful.
Speaking of, where are they? I'd love to see one on screen.

Deadly serious. You are all expecting a writer to be a superman. I'm sorry to break it to you, but they are human beings too. Flawed just like the rest of us.

Just stop! No one is expecting perfection. We ARE expecting consistency and for things to make sense. For all the many flaws of the previous movies, the story made sense (with a few notable exceptions). The tech made sense for the universe. The space wizardry made sense for the universe. It does not for the current iterations.

But you havent yet explained how you expect consistency when the writers and everyone involved keeps changing!

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I'm not flawed. My mom told me so after she made me some Obi-wonton soup and Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru's Tauntaun flavored Dunk-a-roos.
Ok, the branding is getting messy...
