Let's be real for a second-- it was, at minimum better than several of the worst Marvel movies that all earned better RT scores. I would dare anybody to tell me, with a straight face, that Thor: The Dark World was better than Justice League.

my groups DC fanboy will take you up on that, me i didnt waste my time watching justice league after the flash actor insulted hetrosexual people in an IGN interview then tried to force gal to do the same.

So I think that people who aren't really invested in the Star Wars story, who like Star Wars but are more there for the fun adventure than overarching plot development between movies, will love this one. That describes my fiancé, and she said it was the best Star Wars movie ever. My 8 year old step son said the same thing, and what he cares about most is Kylo, and is not all that interested in Rey (he just loves the bad guys in these movies, Vader the most, but never cared for Snoke). Me I thought the movie was good, but was a let down on some key points that span between movies. I describe exactly what I'm talking about over in the spoilers thread.

Mark Hamill - Best performance of his entire career
Adam Driver - Best performance of the movie, he does a really good job portraying the conflicted nature of the character

Oh and the porgs are not overdone. Some cute moments here and there, but don't worry they don't ruin the movie.

It's at least the best SW movie for non-geeks.

I meant less and best Star Wars movie.

It's the less because it is subverts several dogmas and makes more changes in the Star Wars mythos and filmography. And it's the best for the same reasons.

I realized that the main reason I enjoyed this movie while I was watching it was that there are now 9 Star Wars movies... and only 4 of them are any good. When I was a kid, Star Wars was awesome. Then, in 1999, that all changed and they made three consecutive terrible Star Wars films. Then they made a bland and uninteresting one. Four straight Star Wars movies were not good. This is the new normal.

Star Wars being "not great" is the result more than half the time, and as such, Star Wars movies are no longer special. Now that I can watch The Last Jedi like it is a Saturday afternoon SyFy film with a big budgets, I can just enjoy it for being a spectacle. And when I watch a Star Wars movie like Rogue One, and it's actually good, and it does something new and interesting while still being Star Wars, it's a surprise.

Episode VIII is actually what I expect Star Wars to be now. Dumb plots, campy dialog, excessive comic relief, muddle characterization, poorly choreographed battle set pieces, plot points based on ridiculous setups, but decent individual performances, lots of special effects and an easy to follow story that I can just ride along with, rather than experience. Getting to see it for free probably helped too, lol.

So does anyone really like TLJ but did not like at all TFA?

This basically describes me. Very lukewarm on TFA, but really liked TLJ.

Pretty much me too! Although I liked Rey's character enough in this movie it makes me want to go back and see how awesome she is in TFA. I didn't think TFA was terrible, but it wasn't great.

I have to see it another couple times before I rush to a decision, but I'm certain it's ranked higher than the prequels, Rebels, Clone Wars, Spaceballs, and TFA for me. I might put it higher than Rogue One and Episode VI too, but that's going to be tough. It's somewhere in there.

All in all, really good, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do in Episode IX!

Typo

I mean I enjoyed it, so did my dad, grandpa and cousin. Although there is an upside to look to, we are definitely getting a clean slate shipwise next movie!

I find it fascinating how divisive this movie is. The general audience seems to be loving this film, saying it is possibly the best of all the Star Wars films, while a good percentage of hard core Star Wars fans are putting it at or below Phantom Menace levels. (I still think Attack of the Clones is the worst prequel movie, but I am in the minority.)

No recent movie is so strong in its ability to split people's opinions into loving it and hating it. I for one absolutely loved it. I take it's divisiveness as an indicator of quality & sophisticated storytelling.

There are many things to dislike, so the haters have many solid arguments in their favor. Yet, the important storytelling moments involving the key characters swung big for a home run and actually hit a grand slam!! The best parts of this movie are beyond all the greatest high points of all past Star Wars films. This film, I suspect, is opening new cinematic horizons that add to the storytelling legacy of the body of great films from the past. (I'm NOT saying it's the best movie ever) Few, if any, films have a pedigree going back 40 years.

The beginning of the movie was weak, and for the many small things that detract from the film, well, I was editing those out as I watched. Without fail, all the key storytelling moments delivered. This movie really was two different movies only partially combined into one. It's a pretty good sci-fi movie with many cinematic technics borrowed directly from modern super-hero movies dragging it down. Also, it's a true space opera artistically done with the highest of production values. This movie will be greatly enhanced when there eventually is a fan edit that revolves around the 'space opera' movie within a movie.

I am trying to tie a thought about Star Wars into this TED talk. After working a very hard day I cant seems to find the correct words. I think that people want EP 5 but they will never have Ep 5 so they poo poo anything that is not Ep 5. They find a way to dislike whats before them not happy that its what they wanted. We will never have another Ep5, so we rage. Ep 8 is an outstanding movie and is more star wars which is good. Personally there is only one scene I disliked which had an out space flying space thing (no spoiler) I saw the trolling of Mark Hamel which matches who he is in really life and I see how charters in ep 8 will take of the mantle for a new Gen. IDK but give the following a listen too and see what you think.

It's great for people who've never cared about Star Wars for sure, and I don't mean to be condescending when I say that.

Disney are fishing for a new and larger audience and they are doing a pretty good job of it.

Actually its the opposite I didn't want this movie to have anything to do with empire I wanted it to be something new.

Part of why I didn't like TFA that much was it was just a remake of hope and didn't expand the universe, its the same with this film its just mixing empire with a bit of Jedi.

To make a decent film they need to stop rehashing what already exists and make their own story.

Critism can be a helpful tool not a negative experience if you let it.

I like it better than TFA. I think that TFA was produced to a higher standard though.
