Next Expansion

By XTrueFinale, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Maybe it's just me, but I have a feeling that the clan packs will come in the middle of dynasty cycles moving forwards. After Phoenix, we'll get the next Cycle of packs and after the 3rd pack, we'll get another Clan pack release that ties in to both the clan theme and the theme of the cycle.

Just a feeling

Having to wait what could be years for your clan's cards seems...not good to me.

IMO the clan packs are in lieu of a big box expansion. 25 cards across seven packs is 175 cards, the cynic in me thinks that they want $20 for seven packs is better than $30 for all of them in a big box. That being said, in a game like L5R some players might find the other clan's cards worthless and want to spend a little less for just their stuff.

I think if the last 6 months have taught us anything it is that L5R won't release like other LCG...I don't fully get why people still think it is going to be the same whenever thing so far has been different....

Right now I think the next releases will be the clan packs, one a month, until we have them all, as that would put us at Gencon with all everyone having a choice in roles, like FFG said would be the case for Gencon 2018.

The only issue with that is the single clan player is far more likely to "talk" themselves out of purchasing a clan pack that doesn't feature their faction heavily with the justification if I really need the one card in their I'll borrow it from a friend who doesn't play my clan so FFG could end up with 7 months of lagging sales to show for the initiative. Story packs that equally feature all clans on the other hand with a few useful neutral cards are much easier for players to talk themselves into buying,

Exactly. That's why I really don't think we'll see a flood of clan packs and then the next Dynasty cycle. I'd bet we'll see the 2nd cycle starting february or march at the latest and 2-3 clan packs this year (and maybe 1-2 Deluxe on top of that).

I agree, my expectation is the Clan Packs will be a quarterly release so that we see them all in a year and a bit. Will suck to be the last few but I also expect that will be the stronger clans so they won't necessarily be as disadvantaged by the reduced card pool as some of the clans who suffered out the gate during the Imperial Cycle. My expectation would be something like Phoenix-Unicorn-Dragon-Crane-Scorpion-Crab-Lion (with the Scorpion Crab possibly swapping spots).

Regular releases will still be a normal cycles with a 2-3 month gap between cycles that would be filled with a deluxe box to introduce new factions (I expect Mantis, Naga and Shadowlands/Spider to be future inclusions just based on art assets that would have come with the IP sale).

FFG will really want people to buy the Clan Packs. To help encourage that they will want the incentive of meta being affected by limited Clan Packs available at first so that non-Clan players will buy the packs for the counters. I agree that monthly releases instead of a story cycle just would not be a good business plan. Rumor is that Phoenix will be available in March. A January and February of no new cards seems plausible, especially after a six week cycle. My suspicion is that the next cycle will start a few weeks to a month after the Phoenix pack, giving us a March or April beginning and a August or September end just in time for a one or two month break in preparation for worlds.

I don't disagree with you, but I don't think FFG's business strategy factors in "single clan players".

I would love to see each deluxe box being an event in the lore. Have 2-4 clans featured but give all clans at least a few things in the box. But I also oppose new factions being introduced into the game at all, much less in deluxe boxes.

L5R is being launched in Brazil soon, and they’re using a subscription model. You pay a certain amount each month and then receive the cards in your house or LGS. There are 3 plans (depending on the number of cores you want). For 3 cores:

Meaning you pay about 35$/month during 12 months for 3 cores, 12 Dynasty packs and 2 deluxes to be delivered during 2018.
6 of those Dynasty packs are the Imperial Cycle packs and I think that what they’re calling Deluxes is the Clan packs.
Supposing the Brazilian publishers have more information than us concerning the release schedule, my guess is that we’re looking at a Dynasty Cycle->Clan pack publishing iteration.

I wonder if the Clan packs will fade from being tournament legal like the Dynasty cycles? Or will the Core and Clan Packs be standard in all tournaments?

Hmmm tournament rules does not say anything about that. Most likely anything can be cycled out. They did find it out hard way with Netrunner, so I would Expect that anything and everything will cycle... eventually.

new core in five year? And that could start new cycle round or something completely different. I am sure that Ffg keeps it options open as long as it can an the deside how to proceed.
