Alternative Play Format: Objectives for X-Wing

By Brunas, in X-Wing

Apart from this new format simply being awesome, please also keep this in mind:

Magic TCG started at some point to support fan-made alternative formats.
We have many by now, but four stand out to me, and all scratch a different itch: HotAC, narrative event (Assault on Greyskull Base), now this, objectives, and team championships. They cover from non-competitive (working together) to "casual-competitive" to a competitive non-200/6 option to team200/6 everything I could wish for! (e: and Kraytcup combines the latter two as far as I understand it?)

That's amazing! Thanks to all who made it possible!

So....if we want to talk about lists, where should we do that? I've got 2 I have whipped up, but not tested. I have to say that this objectives has me thinking about lists like nothing else in a while.

This one looks really fun to me:

Unhinged Astromech (1)
Inertial Dampeners (1)
Enforcer (1)

Black Sun Ace (23)
Fearlessness (1)
Black Market Slicer Tools (1)
Pulsed Ray Shield (2)
Vaksai (0)

Cartel Marauder (20)

My local store gives credit for anyone who helps run a tournament or league that they come up with, which is what I planned on doing, but someone just beat me to the punch! I saw today that we are starting a seven-week league next week and our next two monthly tournaments will be objectives as well! I am trying to start a dialog of the list I was thinking of here .

Also, has anyone heard whether there are plans to build in support for the format into Cryodex?

Removed Squadlist to proper forum.

Sorry for the dumb question, but how can I move an objective? In first scenario I earn 50 VP if I get the shuttle into my deploy area, but I can't read how to move an objective. How it works? In the first page there's nothing about it.

It's under the 2nd Objective rules:

  • If a player controls Range 1 of the objective, that player scores 10 VP and may execute a 1 straight or 1 bank maneuver from the front guides.

My makeplayingcards.com order arrived today - can’t wait to get home and take a look at them (and post up some photos of how they turned out!)

Please do post photos. I'm waiting on my order of 10 sets.

Did everybody who ordered from makeplayingcards.com get a customer service note to flip the backs? (If the default images are used, the headers on both sides of a given card aren't at the top.) I thought that was pretty impressive customer service, especially since it took a back-and-forth for me to understand what the rep was telling me was wrong.

I did not receive such a notice. I wonder how mine will turn out?

Honestly, as long as the image looks good on both sides and it’s quality material I am happy. Whether I flip the card one way to see the back or the other way I am just fine.

You can just run it as an imperial assault tournament! Maybe we can bother @Killerardvark to add an exact copy module that says xwing objective format, but that sounds ugly...

Awesome that the cards are coming in soon! Yes, please post pics :)

What material did you get? (I went for plastic.) Does it flip long-edge (headers pointing opposite) or short-edge (headers in the same way)?

I got playing card material. It feels along the lines of standard playing cards in thickness.

mine flips long edge (headers point opposite)

@Brunas , @Rytackle

Y'all might want to flip the backs of the card-images 180-degrees in the downloadable pack. It's not a huge deal, but I'm personally glad the makeplayingcards.com rep caught it for me and let me correct it.

I'm not sure of Dion's name here.

I hope somebody at FFG is crying about how much money they left on the table here.

Then, maybe we'll see a campaign box.

Rumor has it that Josh D. is doing a "HotAC" type game, commercially, for ST:AW, speaking of leaving money on the table.

Good idea, thanks. I'm trying out another printing service this week, hopefully everyone wants them consistently the same way and we can just do it that way.

I will order some. I'll make sure to ask them to flip the backs when I use the image.

Anyone have suggestions on the various options to get? When you said you ordered 10 sets, did you get 10 sets of the 7 cards? I mean the 6 missions and the 1 rules card. Or do you order a full set of custom cards that are something like 56 cards and each deck is really 6 sets of packs?

Thanks for helping the idiot out. :P

I would order one “deck” of cards from them and cram as many repeated sets of the 7 cards as you want into it. It’s cheaper than ordering multiple decks, especially if you’re only going to get 3-4 copies of the cards. Up to 30 cards in a custom deck is 7-8 bucks I think, so if you buy one “deck” you can fit 4 sets of cards into it and be cheaper.

You can rotate the backs yourself. I'd recommend rotating them before you even upload them to MPC.

Yes, I ordered 70 cards ... 10 sets of 7. It was a $38 for plastic, including shipping.

Great stuff, added to the index of useful links!

Interesting! So the print company doesn't mind that the cards used copyright material?

I got my 10 sets of plastic cards from makeplayingcards.com, and they're perfect. (I'm selling six sets for cost, keeping one for myself, and giving away three as gifts.) Including shipping, the cost for 70 plastic cards was $38.

As a reminder to folks getting these made, if such things matter to you: don't forget to make sure the fronts and backs are flipped, so that the "top" of the card is the same on both sides. (To reference the cards, it makes absolutely no difference at all; but if you've got some mild OCD, like me, it might.) In my case, the images in the Dropbox download are aligned in the same direction, so I flipped the images for the "backs" 180 degrees.

I'm really looking forward to using these when League resumes on January 15th. (In Oakland at Endgame, Bay Area folks!)
