Versing an Epic ship in Escalation - help!

By Arctitian, in X-Wing

In a local league we're doing an escalation variant at 90, 120, 150 and 180 points. One evil and twisted player, who shall remain nameless (yes, it's you Matt) is using an Epic ship (CROC I believe). At 120 he also has Fenn and Asajj, I have Miranda, Rebel Fenn, Lowhhrick and probably Rex. I usually fly in formation until I get Miranda's missiles off and maybe one more round.

Now, I've never played epic, but I know that epic ship can destroy ships by simply running into them (as well as, presumably, by shooting at them with whatever weapons it has). On a 3x3 board, this seems like a challenge, especially with Fenn and Asajj flying around too.

Help! How do I even begin to deal with this?

(Bumping this because by the time it had been approved by a moderator it had fallen off the front page)

Munitions, lots and lots of munitions, avoid the space around the ship and just focus it down first!

What load out is he planning on running on it?

First of all, don't get run over. :P

He'll be running the CROC since he's flying Scum. If he is smart, he will put a 360 secondary turret on it, which will not give you a back side to hide behind. (If he doesn't, circle around behind and put a banana in his tailpipe!)

As taulover55 said, alpha strikes with missiles are devastating to Huge ships, as it TLT. They get no dodge, and without much shields (4 for the CROC), you quickly start getting hull hits. At that point, score crits if possible. . .critical hits are very bad for Huge ships. Since they can regen shield, you need to focus fire. Plink, plick gets you nowhere.

Also, they are not maneuverable. Heck, on 3x3, I wonder if a valid strategy might be to just ignore the dang thing and watch it fly off the far end of the board.

Simple - they can’t move fast, so stay out of range 2ish of his front.

Then hit it hard with missiles or other focused fire, and especially try to stay on the back side. The croc 360 hardpoint he can use is only range 2-3, so if you can get behind him at range one it’s a sweet spot. Just don’t bump him (treated like running into an asteroid) and don’t get in the area his base will be when he moves.

Miranda has Harpoons and Long-Range Scanners - and TLT of course. So I suppose I could get my Harpoons off ASAP and then circle round back with Miranda and close in from the side with the others (who are slower). Would you try to take out the CROC before focusing on Asajj and Fenn? I'm worried they'll eat me up while I'm trying to bring down the big ship.

Welcome to the glory of epic play!!

You're gonna have to run a threat assessment on the CROC and decide which needs to die first--the capital ship or its fighter support. Your opponent's job is to make that a tough choice. ;)

Why do I picture a C-ROC with Maul and Zuckuss crew on it with that heavy laser turret. If you see that, the threat priority just spiked unless you can tank the shots.

If you were just playing epic, I would say spam lots of cheap generics and throw as many ion weapons as you can afford. Ions deny huge ships their energy and they are far easier to deal with when they have no energy. Also putting ions on his other ships can get them trun over by their own huge ship.

If no one else is running epic ships though it may be hard to win against other things with only ion loadouts.

If he has Assaj, is he already running Latts Razzi? If not, or if he can modify upgrades somehow, look out for Latts on the C-Roc. He can Jam you and be extremely defensive.

I will see if I can find out what he's running, will have to wait until tomorrow - but from past experience, it's likely to be nasty

Ok, so the build is:

Because apparently that's exactly what it is, haha. Plus comms booster.

Well. Since friendly Xwing is off the table I suggest you pick up the table and bludgeon your friend with it.

Seriously though, it's one 4-red weapon with basically a target lock (Maul) and a second chance to whiff your green dice if you had any luck at all. It has a blind spot at range one, but you need to be cautious you don't get run over. Rex hurts it first round of fire, unless he shoots Rex of course. Fenn Rau is useless since no tokens are being used. He will have to make the other parts of the list sad somehow. Lowie is handy.

Honestly, I don't think you have the firepower to drop it fast. Keep out of range and deal with the rest of his list.

If you do go for the CROC, sustained fire to burn his energy reserves will prevent the gun from firing eventually... While Asajj and Fenn Rau hurt you bad.

Yeah, it doesn't sound much fun, does it? I suspect he'll just run the thing up the middle, forcing me to either side and making it basically impossible to stay out of range. Probably Fenn and Asajj will try to kite / act as decoys if I go for them - I doubt they'll let me have easy shots. They can just fly around until the CROC weakens me, or pounce if I go for the CROC. Ugh.
