The Last Jedi is a flawed movie.

The Last Jedi is a great Star Wars movie.

Context for my next comment: I’ve cried twice in the last ten years. Once when my grandfather died. Once when I thought I was dying on an emergency room gurney. I am not a crying person.

There were parts of The Last Jedi I wanted to shed a tear for. I laughed. I clapped. I cringed at some gross errors. I walked away with the one thing I wanted most from the movie, an enjoyable Star Wars experience shared with someone I love. (My wife won’t read this, but I’m talking about her anyway.)

I wish I could hit like more than once for your great comment that sums up much of how I felt about TLJ.

It's holding stead at 56% and 30k more people have added their reviews.

It's clearly a marmite movie.

Agreed. However the major issue from my point of view is that what made parts of the Last Jedi "a great Star Wars movie" won't be around for the sequel (or if they are, in an incredibly reduced role), while what made parts of The Last Jedi a flawed Star Wars movie will take full centre stage.

Snoke and Luke I guess you mean? I said earlier in one of my posts that I wanted to see one of the 'old crew' do something really significant in the final chapter; that isn't going to happen now and it saddens me.

Yoda explains the overall theme to Luke. Failure is our greatest teacher and choosing what looks like the easy way has consequences.

Every character deals with it and the movie is built around it. The only wise characters are Yoda & Leia. Everyone else is a mess and learning the hard way from some significant mistakes. We all complained about how "perfect" Rey was in TFA....well here you go now every hero is massively flawed. Even Luke ( kudos to Mark Hamil being a great actor ) hes still dealing with the consequences of choosing not to complete his training. Yoda shows up to help him do that and heal from years of living in fear.

Exactly. This movie, rather than trying to rhyme with other films, keeps the rhyme internal. Not only is failure binding it together, but the guilt that comes from it resulting in moments-of self-sacrifice. Holdo cannot hold-off the enemy --> suicide run. Finn's plan fails and makes things even worse --> suicide run. Luke's failure with Ben --> his selfless stall tactic. This whole thing kicks off with Paige Tico in the beginning (pun intended in hindsight).

Well said, sir. I've been trying to find the right words to voice my opinion on the film. Your two statements above I think perfectly describe it. Episode 8 is a flawed movie, but it is still a great Star Wars movie. I'm looking forward to seeing it again, even though there are things in it I don't particularly agree with. And I'm still excited to see where this story is going.

All in all, I found the Last Jedi to be a good movie.

I feel this. There was cheering and whooping in the cinema when the opening crawl hit. There was dead silence when the closing credits hit.

Rogue One's ending left fans buzzing leaving the theatre; The Last Jedi, not so much.

Over here, Rouge One had everyone completely flummoxed at the ending's **** awful cgi and corny writing. ****, the entire movie was just a flatline apart from Vader's horrendous pun and then him tearing the **** out of those poor doomed troopers.

I can't really speak to the Last Jedi experience because we saw it at the Alamo Drafthouse, and everyone was having a **** good time (they serve alcohol in the theater)

Ugh, yeah, I could have done with a bathroom break during the Canto Bight arc. Unfortunately I moderated my drink intake prior to watching (went to a Force Awakens/Last Jedi double bill)

Possibly, but people were buzzing after the showing of Rogue One I went to. There was some puzzled grumbling about spacewalk Leia in the exit queue after Last Jedi. Although one of my friends was bouncing when Nein Numb lived.
