I still want to know who snoke is, where he came from, and how he got so powerful.
Star Wars 8 - The Last Jedi - Reviews (SPOILERS!!)
14 minutes ago, defkhan1 said:I loved it. That was probably the high point of the movie for me. The Rey/Kylo/Luke scenes were amazing while the Resistance/First Order plot was just not very good.
Indeed! That whole scene was amazing.
I always wanted to see Royal Praetorian Guards in action. It was very satisfying.

Like all Star Wars movies?

See, I think Gwendoline Christie is a fantastic actress and would be great to see more of. I just don’t want a crazy death scene to be followed up by a timely arival and a moan about Finn. Still, ‘‘tis only a space movie
4 minutes ago, Odanan said:Apparently, the Knights of Ren are Kylo's (Jedi) school buddies. You know the guys who gravitate a bully? Those. We don't know what was made of them, but the next movie has a chance to introduce some as Supreme Leader Kylo's personal guard.
There was never a mystery about Rey's parents. Only crazy theories and "everything must be connect" (poor) mindset.
And we might know more about Snoke in the next movie (more flashbacks?) or in books. His death was very well done, because it surprised everybody (specially the own victim).
Yeah I expect the Knights of Ren to be in the next movie.
Of course there was a mystery about Rey's parents though. Rey has a flashback that at the time appeared to show them flying away. Rey is obsessed with them throughout the first movie, always wanting to return to her desert planet so she doesn't miss their return.
We might find out more about Snoke in books, but the way he was killed off in the movie tells me his arch in the movies is over. Probably barely a mention, other than Hux telling Kylo he is no Snoke.
the caretakers on Ach-To. why?

Why not? Star Wars is full of random aliens.
After watching the movie I'm actually more convinced than ever about my favorite Rey theory: she's the reincarnation of the 'chosen one'
It makes sense that her parents are nobodies. Just like Anakin was born to a slave on Tatooine. The parent(s) don't matter.
Snoke even says that she is the light that rises to meet the dark (Kylo). That's why she's so powerful, she's the force trying to establish balance by surging strength into a single being.
Over all I liked the movie. The casino scene was fun and different than anything we've seen in universe and the animal escape felt very Indiana Jones. I agree that the biggest plot hole was the whole cruiser chase mumbo-jumbo. Better if they went with a nebula or a black hole cluster or something. Snoke's death I actually liked, even though I was curious about his character. It was so unexpected, which is good for a series that has been accused of re-hashing the previous films. I also liked how Kylo is now front and center as a badass bad guy. His character arc was really all about stepping out from Vader's shadow and not just trying to copy him (he finally ditched his superfluous helmet).
That being said, I would probably put it on par with TFA. It's better than Return of the Jedi but nowhere near A New Hope or Empire Strikes Back.

I don't think her coming back serves any purpose, lol. I'm just saying she will. This franchise opened a movie with a prank call and a mother joke. Phasma making a return for Episode IX, Return of the JJ is like more Hollywood personalities getting outed for sexual assault. It's not pleasant, but it's inevitable.

these guys seemed to serve no purpose other than slap stick?

Not for me. I will say this: there is not a single part of the OT that I dread seeing during a rewatch. I am fully engrossed and committed in every scene. When I rewatch The Last Jedi on the other hand, I know that I will want to fast forward through the Canto Bight scenes because they were so dull. Same with the Rathtar and Maz scenes in TFA. Same with the a lot of the Jeddah scenes in the first half of Rogue One. Same with many scenes in the prequels.

Which is basically the purpose of aliens in Star Wars going back to the OT?
Edited by KommanderKeldothThere were things I liked, things I didn't. I'm guessing, just like TFA, when I watch it the second time I'll like it a lot more.
My favorite thing about the whole movie was how completely unpredictable the whole thing was. Luke said, "This is not going to go how you think." - and that was pretty much true for me.
Mrs. Rick loved it and wanted ice cream afterwards.

Really? The Special Editions of A New Hope and Return of the Jedi both have cringeworthy scenes (the bad CGI musical number in Jabba's palace anyone?). Even before the special editions Return of the Jedi had some cringeworthy ewok scenes, Chewbacca's Tarzan yell, Boba Fett's slapstick death, and some seriously bad acting between Leia and Luke (that scene in the moonlight at the ewok village where he tells her about their siblinghood, throws off the pace of the entire movie). Mark and Carrie are both good actors so the blame lies squarely on the director and screenwriters but still.
If you strip away your nostalgia you will find that there are plenty of things that are choppy, hokey and forced in the Original Trilogy. But we still love them!!

Can you imagine that happening with Vader and Leia at the start of ANH? I mean; there is comedy from the start with r2/3po but it’s not “yo momma!” jokes. That was actually one of the biggest cringe moments for me.

Yes. Unpredictability is awesome. Specially when you saw so many movies (I was an owner of a video store for 20 years).

Max Reebo was pretty hot on the space drums or whatever he played.

Nothing against random aliens. But they were ridiculous.

Seems doubtful, as this movie was all about the deconstruction of the "chosen one" myth.

Except anakin wasn't just a slave from tatooine whose parnets don't matter. he's literally born from immaculate conception (or created by plagueis, same difference basically). That WAY different from just 2 different nobodies. And I REALLY hope rey doesn't end up having come about the same way (made by the force by snoke or anyone, as I've seen theories of). I don't want her to be the "chosen one".

He also thought it'd be Luke, and thought Kylo was getting ready to kill Rey, so....not the most reliable source?

Yes, of course. There are facepalm-y moments in the OT. But can't we learn from mistakes that were made in the past? It didn't work back then, it sure as **** didn't work in the prequels. Why in the name of Jar Jar Unholy Christ would we wanna see stuff like that yet again?

I think this is part of Star Wars evolving to appeal to a new generation. If you watch the OT the humor is very 70's and 80's, that is to say very sarcastic. It appealed to the times and humor of popular entertainment of the era. TFA opened with the exchange between Poe and Kylo, which was humor appealing to the current comedy trend: awkwardness. Do I talk first? Do you?
Poe and Hux's exchange was funny because we can all relate to using Skype and Google chat and having that exact same problem. It was appealing to the modern audience.

Yes, I still loved every part of Jedi. And I'm not talking about the Special Editions. I keep the old 90s VHS tapes for a reason. I like to pretend the Special Editions never existed. You can blame it on nostalgia, but I really do think it's more than that. TLJ had some truly breathtaking scenes and the entire Luke/Rey/Kylo storyline was amazing. But I'm not sure I can sit through Canto Bight or the contrived FO/Resistance chase on a second viewing. We'll see.

To each his own.
You should try to get a hold of the digital versions of the laserdiscs. DVD quality, pre-special edition Original Trilogy
