Where to buy magnets for trays?

By Willange, in Runewars Miniatures Game

I want to magnetize my trays. I'd like to magnetize the parts with the bases so that the figures themselves will be magnetically connected to trays. I would also like to remove my tray connectors and then magnetize those slots so that I won't have to deal with trying to fiddle with trays as much. With my questions are:

1. Is removing the tray connectors legal? I know they basically don't count for movement collisions (at least in most situations).

2. What kind of magnets do people recommend for this? Where can I get decent ones?

3. If you've tried this already, what are some issues you've run into?

I know some other threads have discussed these types of questions, but this forum search just isn't giving me useful information. Apologies in advance if I'm missing information previously given or if I've created this in the wrong forum. Thanks!

Modifying the pegs for the figures should be fine.

Modifying the interlocking tray edges would not be tournament legal.

Yeah I wouldn't recommend modifying the interlocking trays -- unless you intend to never do organized play, then go ahead.

As far as what magnets to buy -- here is what I and Aetheriac recommend (and others to be clear)

Magnets -- https://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DH1H1

Metal for slots - http://www.buttonboyinc.com/steel-metal-discs-3-4-19mm-for-use-to-make-magnetic-pendants-100-discs/

So you shove the magnets into the 'peg-hole' of the figures, some will need gluing, some will need to be primed on the pegs to accept the magnets. Then you clip the pegs, sand down the surface and glue the button backs into the trays.

Works really well, have done my whole army of Daqan (cavalry and siege too)

Can't modify the tray pegs, they count as in range, and collision in some cases, etc.

Can confirm, this is the easiest and quickest way to get the best hold.

The only place I diverge is for cavalry, who get a magnet in their base AND a magnet in the tray, because they're heavier than infantry.

I'm a newb - only been painting since april, so listen to experts...but what I am doing is:

I found these at home depot: https://www.homedepot.com/p/MASTER-MAGNETICS-3-8-in-Neodymium-Rare-Earth-Magnet-Discs-12-per-Pack-07090HD/202526371

they are 3/8" outside diameter, 1/8" inside, and 1/16" thick. They fit perfectly over the stub on the trays.

then I bought 1/4" flat washers that fit all minis and I put those on each model (whether infantry, cavalry, hero or heavy unit).

Just super-gluing them to the plastic

The Good:

1) no modification to the trays at all. If you don't like it, slotted screwdriver pops them off.

2) the models then "snap" in and it is strong enough to pick up a tray of 4 by a single mini.

3) I can do about 30 of them in about 15 minutes. I have now magnetized all uthuk, elves and about 30 Waiqar. I started doing that Monday this week.

4) forgot to add - while you wait for magnets - you can do all the washers and the minis still fit on the trays.

The bad:

1) the minis stick up 1/16" from the trays - so now I feel the need to "cleanup" those mini sides (see below).

2) larger models will rock back and forth.

3) 12 of those magnets cost about 4$ (US) * 289 magnets for a full collection = so about $100 for just the magnets (how many expansions is that?)

This is what it looks like:

Ohh yeah - I thought about doing the sides of trays too, but here's the thing, as they get close to each other, there's gonna be weirdness, where trays pull towards each other during a game.

bump into another magnetized tray at just the correct angle and it will spin and attach itself to a tray...my thinking...not good.

"auto square up" might not be what you want.
