Tournaments... why bother?

I had no expectation of placing above dead last. I went 0-3 and had a blast. To me the entry fee was a way to help my local store and encourage them to do more tourneys. And to me it was money well spent and a great value. I got 8 hours entertainment, met some really cool people, and got to blow up a gladiator, my one kill of the day and the high point of my weekend.
I plan to play in every tourney I can and probably won't do much better. I am a trucker and have very limited time for practice or list building. I will probably get tabled often and take up permanent residence on the bottom of the tourney list. And I will still be getting exceptional value for my tourney fee.
Oi, @Snipafist here's your guy. For the record Whiplash, and I don't remember if I said this in person or not, but you are the first person I ever tried to teach the game to who on their first game made zero functional mistakes. Sure, there were tactical mistakes made I exploited (kinda sorry, kinda not), but other than the Turn 1 dials goof, you had everything on lockdown, which stunned me. It took me at least five games to get that natural with the mechanics. Good on you, sir. Keep up that rate of learning and next time we play I'll be the one losing for no gain.

The reasoning is this: Once you pass the eight man mark, making a top 4 cut seems impossible if you did not win your round 1 game. Making top 8 is impossible if you did not win your first round game when there are 16 or more players. In other games, events with more than dozen people can go up to 4 or 5 rounds to reach a point where only one person has an undefeated record, giving players who have a bad matchup off the bat a chance to recover if they perform better in the mid rounds.
And that’s without discussing the “bye rewards”that skew the outcome even further.
Wish i could say i was surprised by FFG shenigans but I continually discover their ability to introduce new ways to disappoint me with their short sightedness is absolutely limitless.
A few things:
The point spread in Armada tournaments is larger than in most other FFG games, so a tight loss early on is actually not terrible especially if followed by big wins.
Because of the larger point spread, it is actually much more difficult for Armada players to consistently get huge wins and this gets harder and harder the more rounds played. For example, with about 50 players between 2 days of 5 round swiss tourunaments, it turned out that players only needed an average of about 7.5 points per round to be in the top 8. The top player on day 2 only had about 40 points, so a consistent 8 points a round results ina very competitive player for most larger tournaments. A round 1 or 2 close loss in some ways might actually position you to a slightly easier path forward with only needing really large wins towards the last 1-2 games.
The Bye system as a reward mechanic is difficult to quantify, because it does give you 8 free points but also forces you to immediately engage the upper end of the competitive pool for the event, with a high chance of playing another player who won a Regional event Bye. This will typically depress the scores of equally skilled players who go fro a Bye to direct competition, while a player who got a close win or loss might rocket forward with a substantially larger win in the second round.

Do I enjoy playing Armada or am I just a jerk?
Debatable tbh.
You are allowed to do both

If you know the rules, know you'll be unhappy, and know it'll be a waste of time for you if you don't get to win, then you're absolutely right, you shouldn't go, and everything works out. If you're really convinced it's the system that sucks? Make your own tournament (I'm not being sarcastic here). You'll end up giving away prizes, your time, and your energy though, because tournaments are run by very generous people, who are not in it for the loot. That's just the way it works. There is no "pay for the prizes," because then they aren't prizes, they're merchandise, and why aren't you just buying them directly off ebay? There's nothing wrong with that approach.
For contrast: I recently finished my first regionals. I was super excited, spent well over a month testing out a bunch of different versions of my list. I went to a smaller tournament just to practice. When the regional was over? I was destroyed, 20-somethingth place. And I couldn't wipe the grin off my face, because I got to play for an entire day , with awesome people, many of whom I was meeting for the first time, flying cool lists my meta just didn't have. The promo cards were gravy.
I'm still waiting for another campaign, maybe a epic super start destroyer campaign box.
Also after Legion matures some more perhaps some Armada/Legion combined campaign would be nice.

Exactly, I love Armada and I'm a huge jerk!
