Because that's their actual name: Alpha -class Xg-1 Star Wing . "Assault gunboat" is a designation/nickname (even though it was their only name in their first appearances in the X-wing game series).

Wow, that's news to me.. Always knew then as gunboats, whether from the novels or the xwing pc game series.

Need to get some better lighting for this.
