Is there a good use for expose?

It would probably be perfectly reasonable to errata it to say,

Expose: At the beginning of the combat phase, if you are not stressed, you may increase your Attack value by 1 and decrease your Agility by 1 till the end of the Combat phase, then receive a stress token.

Might be good if we had some sort of upgrade rotation, much like how Expertise basically replaces Marksmanship. This could replace Expose.

I used it on RAC alongside a Lambda with hlc and fleet officer and it was devastating.

Smashed Corran&Dash in 20 minutes.

Knew someone that ran RAC/Expose/Palp, it may even have had Vader on it. It would catch someone off guard now and again... 5 dice? Palp a crit? Mod a crit? OUCH! I can't come up with a good kylo build to compliment it though. Ysanne and EI is good thinkin'!

In epic is the only time I've felt tempted to use it.

Howlrunner, Youngster with Expose, some focus-token-generating crew on other ships, and a full squadron of Crack Shot Black Squadron Pilots is something not to field if you like having friends.

That only works, however, because:

  • Thanks to Howlrunner and the Fleet officers (the well-known Belgian Jazz band), you're still getting dice modifiers despite wasting your action on expose
  • Black Squadron Pilots fire at PS4, early enough not to get blown to crud by corvettes and PS1-3 generics before they shoot
  • Thanks to Youngster, expose essentially costs 1/3 of a point per ship
  • If you were so inclined and didn't mind mixing eras, you could throw some Crack Shot Omega Specialists into the mix as well

In a 'normal' 100 point dogfight? No thanks.

Actually, I can see Expose swarms being potentially viable now due to the introduction of Advanced Optics. TIE/FOs and/or TIE/SFs with Adv Optics + Expose Youngster sound interesting. (Thinking of it, LFW SFs may end up being a good choice, as in some instances (range 3, 2-dice ships) Expose won't give them any drawback while allowing for a 4-dice primary)

Interesting thought.

  • Zeta Specialist x 2
    • Spec Ops Training
    • Fire Control System
    • Advanced Optics
    • Lightweight Frame
  • Zeta Leader
    • Wired
    • Weapons Guidance
  • Youngster
    • Expose

Hmmm.... The Zeta Specialists are nice enough by themselves, and as you note, a lot of the time the -1 agility doesn't matter, and they can get expose/focus/target lock in one turn without too much difficulty.....

Might be worth an experiment.

The problem I forsee is; for the price of youngster with expose (19 points!) you could equip three such ships with 4-attack-dice missiles, instead, and still have a handful of change left over.

Another option is 3 Zetas (as FCS doesn't matter on a first attack)

"Youngster" — TIE Fighter 15
Expose 4
Ship Total: 19
Zeta Specialist — TIE/sf Fighter 23
Collision Detector 0
Advanced Optics 2
Lightweight Frame 2
Ship Total: 27
Zeta Specialist — TIE/sf Fighter 23
Collision Detector 0
Advanced Optics 2
Lightweight Frame 2
Ship Total: 27
Zeta Specialist — TIE/sf Fighter 23
Collision Detector 0
Advanced Optics 2
Lightweight Frame 2
Ship Total: 27

Nice adaption. But again, the issue is that for the same price, you could have the same ships with fire control system/targeting synchronisers, or missiles, or some combination of the two.

It's probably worth a try, as I say. Primarily, I'd rather leave expose youngster for epic; pulling that same trick on 4+ TIE/sf is far, far better value.

I think Thane Kyrell might be another candidate for it. He would need R2-D6 as well just to be able to equip it, but he can wait until he gets a free action during the combat phase to trigger it thus hopefully already having a Focus or Target Lock (or maybe both, if his pilot ability is triggered multiple times in a turn). Hopefully by the time he triggers Expose most other enemy ships will have attacked (quite likely as he's PS4) so the loss of agility won't be so problematic. Used this way, it basically becomes an alternative to Opportunist that triggers under different conditions.

You probably want to pair him up with a more dangerous ship like Nora/Poe/Nym/Wedge so he won't be the prime target and can benefit from the free actions, and maybe a support ship like Shara Bey, Jan Ors or Kyle Katarn.

Or Wookiee’s... they also make a good support ship.

Hm, like if you're at the Olympics and the Olympic fire is about to go out and you have only got your whole bunch of XWing cards with you to support it for a few seconds until somebody else can take over, then it's probably the best time to use expose.

Maybe on RAC with EI.

Nah.

You can put Finn as crew and make a 5 die attack with Thane (6 at R1)
