Chubby aces, first order

By t3hjim, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey all, just received my silencer in the mail and have been trying to squeeze one + my beloved upsilon into a list. I've not been happy with lists with just the two of them, I think they might need a wingman. Best I've come up with so far is:

Blackout (Silencer) 31

Adaptability 0

Primed Thrusters 1

Collision Detector 0

First Order Vanguard 2

Total 34

Kylo Ren (Upsilon) 34

Veteran Instincts 1

Pattern Analyser 2

Agent Kallus 2

Rebel Captive 3

Sensor Jammer 4

Kylo Ren's Shuttle 2

48

Epsilon Ace 17

Primed Thrusters 1

18

100/100

Quite like them all being PS 8 or above (at least temporarily!) I have tried to beef up the upsilon, though I feel I may have overspent on it. Any thoughts would be great!

This is my big issue.

  • PS 8...because? Kylo lacks the ability to boost, or barrel roll, or otherwise really take advantage of his pilot skill. Pattern analyser means you can use the red moves reasonably well - getting target lock or target lock + kallus against (named target), which is nice, and with sensor jammer, rebel captive and kylo's ability, he's a bad choice to shoot at (especially if someone was relying on expertise!)
  • He is 48 points for a ship that will take 2+ turns to come about and is restricted to a 90' forward arc, though. Getting enough shots to justify the big stick may be hard, and spending 48 points on a tough co-ordinate buddy seems over-investing in support.

Fair enough. Boosting and rolling into debris with impunity, rerolls on attack if you set up your shots right, rerolls for defence behind a 'break glass in case of emergency' discard.

My two comments:

  • Given that you'll plan on hiding behind debris to get his awesome evade-piercing shot, trick shot seems an obvious EPT. It's also free, and being PS8 rather than PS7 doesn't exactly leapfrog many opponents movement order, especially as you have no initiative bid.
  • Where the expletive/blasphemy/indelicacy are his autothrusters? This modification is pretty much stapled to any expensive hull which can take it for a good reason...

Epsilon Ace is an amazing lil' ship. I think either Advanced Optics (allowing him focus/evade or focus/target lock for cheap) or targeting synchroniser (making him a PS12 target lock buddy for the price of a badly equipped Y-wing) are good choices, but both require points you currently don't have. If you don't want to cut things, Primed thrusters remains a decent enough choice.

Thanks for the advice, breaking it down ship by ship was really helpful too. As a new player I think I'm placing too high a value on PS, as you say it doesn't really do much on the shuttle. I've had a rejig, cutting down the points on the Upsilon to (hopefully) a more sensible level:

Blackout (Silencer) 31

Trick Shot 0

Primed Thrusters 1

Collision Detector 0

Auto Thrusters 2

First Order Vanguard 2

Total 36

Kylo Ren (Upsilon) 34

A Score to Settle 0

Pattern Analyser 2

Agent Kallus 2

Rebel Captive 3

Sensor Jammer 4

45

Epsilon Ace 17

Advanced Optics 2

19

100/100

Would it be worth swapping Kylo for a cheaper pilot and adding the shuttle back on or something like experimental interface?

Okay, this above Blackout build is A+, my personal favorite. I agree that Epsilon ace is an absolute hoot.

Kylo is where I waffle. He WANTS to be shot. Right now you have him built like he doesn't want to get shot.

What about this?

Kylo Ren

Trick Shot

Collision Detector

Op Spec

Rec Spec

Weapons Guidance

Pattern Analyzer

Trick Shot and Collision Detector are just useful little free upgrades, and they synergize well with Blackout also wanting to line up into rocks. Op Spec is such a great boost for the squad that ignoring it's carrier is stupid, especially when its carrier has 1 focus for normal use and 1 focus for Weapons Guidance on 4 red dice. This is not a ship to ignore, meaning that Blackout and Epsilon Ace might last a while while they try tear this guy down, getting shown the Dark Side all the way!

Just to throw something out there-- generally with a fat Upsilon you kit it out to be an unattractive target, then you shove it in your opponent's face such that it can't be ignored.

Fat Upsilons are the anvil, you just need a strong hammer to go along with them.

Thanks guys! Just played my first games with the above list, first against Poe, Pava and a Red Ace. Blackout was phenomenal, think he may be a staple in my lists from now on. Took down Poe in 3 turns (with some upsilon coordination). The Epsilon Ace didn't do a whole lot on paper but helped chip away at targets and only lost his shield all game. The Upsilon was very interesting, as Rampancy said it was basically there to chuck out coordinates, tank shots and occasionally throw out an attack. It did really well in this role and even dished out more damage than it took (score to settle + Kallus is horrible!) If the game had gone on longer/I hadn't rolled well it would have been in trouble. Second game was similar, Poe + Falcon where StS + Kallus was even better! Blackout was amazing again and some lucky damage cards + debris field took the falcon out early on. Poe got behind the Upsilon but didn't even chew through the shields before being finished off. I can see

really capitalising on the few shots you do get in, but I think he would need more than 2 wingmen and at that point I would probably go Hux + Stridan. Definitely worth looking more into though, but would have to build a new squad around it imo.
