big ole list of talents

By Klort, in Genesys

I've compiled a list of additional talents for use with my gaming group, and thought I might as well put it up here. Some notes:

  • Most of the talents are taken directly from the Star Wars game, some were changed a bit, and a few are completely homebrewed.
  • Be aware that both the balancing and the formatting may not be perfect (though I'd appreciate feedback).
  • I used the Star Wars symbols, because my group will continue to use the old dice, so sorry for any inconvenience.
  • Most of the talents can be used in any setting, while a few are obviously setting specific (e.g. magic talents). Decide for yourself which ones you'll use.

Mostly random thoughts on reading these.

  • Charge is great, mostly because I couldn't word a similar version that I like
  • Iron Soul/Body are fantastic for a monk character
  • Multiple Opponents has a minor typo/you didn't add the needed symbol
  • Rain of Death as tier 2? I'd rate that much higher (I put it on tier 5 of my list)
  • Shield Bash is awesome
  • Circle of Shelter is an nice/simpler version of a talent I made, so I like that a lot. Maybe stipulate you have to have ranks in Parry first though
  • I had Pressure Point as tier 3 and It's Not That Bad at 5

Thank you for doing the dirty work!

Having Hunter's Quarry and its Improvement in the same Tier, 4, seems a bit awkward to me. Can Hunter's Quarry be dropped to Tier 3?

I would put Adaptable at rank 4, or rank 3 at the very least. Those kinds of talents are generally equivalent to the Natural and Master talents, and of equal cost, in Star Wars.

A talent like Tinkerer, although found in varying places, was a rather rare talent. Putting it at 1 is probably a bit to low. For talents that were often balanced by rarity, I've taken to placing them at rank 3.

According to the recommendations in the book, Deadly Accuracy fits in at rank 3 at least. Iron Body, as found in Star Wars, is very powerful, but can only found in one specialization, thus there are at most 3 ranks (can't exactly remember the number). Based on how it modifies combat, it should probably be rank 3.

Iron Soul is a very powerful talent, completely negating the need to roll for recovering strain at the end of an encounter. While it does have some measure of restrictions, I feel it would be a rank 4 talent.

I agree that bumping Rain of Fire one or two ranks is a good idea. Freerunning and Improved Freerunning should probably be separated. I'd bump Freerunning (Improved) up a rank. It's Not That Bad being raised to 5 is also a good idea.

I think Plausible Deniability should be a bit higher ranked. Either way, I would replace the effect being based on number of success to either ranks in characteristic or skill. Just a thought.

Frenzied Attack and Hunter's Quarry could be bumped down a rank, Precision Strike could be lowered to rank 3 at least (remember there are improved and supreme versions), and Intense Focus to rank 5.

Clarity.

I've converted almost all the Edge of Empire talents. Many of your's are the same tier, but many are off, and a few significantly different. I don't know that my judgement is any better, though.,,

There are no Modification Options, though; thus, Attachments are slightly less valuable.

In the Alternate rules section on page 206, they go over all the rules for Hard Points, including how to determine how many a weapon has / installing attachments / types of attachments, as well as a list of common attachments.

They have examples for both modern and fantasy level equipment.

Sweep is okay in Tier 3 I think, maybe could be Tier 4 worthy, but it needs the wording clarification about targeting more than one target (making the primary check against the target with the highest defenses, etc.) or that Talent could be abused pretty easily.

Unarmed Parry seems like a punishment. I put mine in Tier 1. Even then it's a 5xp requirement for a monk'ish typed character.

I'm assuming you have speed rules in your game for Debilitating Shot? If you don't mind, what are your speed rules?

Your shield bash made me completely reconsider my shield attack rules. It's simpler and useful.
