So I bought a Sheathipede

By Theycallhimben, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey guys.

Story time.

I was painting some Infinity miniatures at my local nerd shop, the same night the new wave came in. The X-Wing players were around and, when I realised I’d left a couple of key paints at home, I decided to buy an X-Wing ship and repaint it instead. The Force was with me, I guess.

I bought the Phantom II because it looks like a cute little bug and gave it a snazzy new paint job. So I now have a Phantom II, a starter set in the cupboard somewhere, and no idea what to do next.

Any suggestions for a cool, simple squadron list using the Phantom II that I can bring to my FLGS?

There was a good build I saw on it yesterday with Ezra piloting. He wants stress so he was packing R3-A2 and Gunner to set up double stress opportunities. Pretty cheap and effective, while getting those defensive focus to evades to work for it. And still annoying enough to make me decide to take damage or double stress.

Buy the Ghost expansion.

Which raises a question. I am a newish casual player finding myself drawn to rebels. I was contemplating picking up this expansion primarily for the astromechs but I hate buying ships just for the cards. Is the Phantom 2 good enough support on its own if I have no intention of buying the Ghost? Thanks for the feedback.

I’m the wrong person to ask: I’m in the “mistakes were made” category of X wing expansion purchaser.

I guess it all depends: what kind of list do you want to run? Do you think you will get bored with just one list?

Definitely good enough without the Ghost. It has a great range of really good pilots and a bunch of different ways to build them.

It having the coordinate action makes it a great support ship without anything else, plus it has a rear firing arc which is brilliant.

I just got the Sheathipede, and IMHO, point for point, it is one of the strongest ships to come out of the game recently. My 2 highlight builds are Ezra w/ Gunner, R3-A2. and Snap Shot for absolutely inane stress control, and Fenn w/ M9-G8 and Weapons Engineer, to absolutely stymie your opponent's offense and very effectively boost your own offense.

Thanks for the quick replies. I was getting the same feeling so we seem to be on the same wavelength.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Ordered the box with Poe and the Falcon for a bunch of useful cards and a couple of ships to start with. That’ll give be me the YT, two X-Wings and the Sheathibug. Quite looking forward to repainting the Falcon in full party colours.

I’m not going to bother trying to put together tournament-calibre lists for a while, if at all. What Rebel ships have people found to be particularly fun?

I can never get enough of the ARC-170, probably my favorite ship, though this Sheathipede is giving it a run for its money.

fit an xwing around the bug and rey. It wont be top tier but it will work

Also if anyone wants to check out my repaint, it’s here:

If you want to stick with "Rebels" as a theme, you can do a lot worse than the Sheathipede, the Ghost and Sabine's TIE fighter. Pairing up the Ghost itself with the three lil' ships in various combinations gives you a big battleship with really great action economy and one or two support ships which can actually do pretty well with the ghost covering them.

As an example, using all 4 ships:

  • Kanan Jarrus
    • "Ghost"
    • Fire Control System
    • Recon Specialist
    • "Chopper"
  • Hera Syndulla
    • "Phantom"
    • Adaptability
  • Fenn Rau
    • Adaptability
    • R2 Astromech
  • Captain Rex

I know the Phantom title doesn't really do anything aside from give Hera a place to hide, but that's just for the sake of argument.

Kanan is going to be a nightmare to hurt - theoretically, you lose 1 attack die from Kanan's ability, 1 from Rex's ability and the ability to modify your attack dice from Fenn's ability. Yes, the Ghost is agility 0 but enjoy shooting at it with your one unmodified attack die....

In practical terms, you probably one to drop one of the three small ships to more thoroughly kit out the other two - exactly how is a matter of taste.

Try this with what you have/are getting; Not top tier, but will give you some fun things to do:

"Blue Ace" (27)
Flight-Assist Astromech (1)
Primed Thrusters (1)
Integrated Astromech (0)

Ezra Bridger (Sheathipede) (17)
Wired (1)
Maul (3)
BB-8 (2)

Resistance Sympathizer (38)
Hotshot Co-pilot (4)
Rey (2)
Burnout SLAM (1)
Smuggling Compartment (0)
Millennium Falcon (TFA) (1)

Total: 98
