Considering Regionals

By BlodVargarna, in X-Wing

... buuut I'm a bit off put by 2 things: 1) a $25 fee!??. and 2) possibility of a second day (non-starter really)

So I could fork over the greenbacks and think of it as an expensive yet probably crap lunch and a day of high stakes X-wing. I'm under no illusions I'd make final 16 anyway so possibility of 2nd day is slim to none.

What would you guys do?

How far are you traveling?

Our local regional is an hour away from me and $25. The price is steep in relation to the IA and Armada regionals that are both $10 entries (and will be much smaller than the 100+ expected for X-Wing). I'm willing to suck down two days given the distance round trip *if* I make the cut, but I can see it discouraging people from farther away.

I would go in a heartbeat. I can't though because of the travel expense.

Last year there was one 25 minutes away, now it's 6 hours away. So, if it's close don't miss out.

Also depends on the loot, and how competitive you are. Some regionals give out awesome prizes like playmats to top 32 players, etc. Others like around here give out just whats in the kit. Luckily for them, I play for the competition or I wouldnt drive over 2 hours for it. I like to see how good I am, and test my skills, and casual nights just dont do that.

25 is still ok imo, because almost every tournament costs me 50 bucks to get there, and then another 15+ for lunch

Also, I distinctly remember numerous times where different people declared how gladly they would pay double to get better tournaments. Not saying that this one is ‚better‘, but at least it demonstrated that money is not the problem, in principle

I pulled the trigger on the Games n Stuff Regionals! I hope to see some of you guys there.

If you just want to get 5 or 6 challenging games of x-wing in, it's totally worth the price of a discount Silencer. There might even be decent door prizes, depending on where you go. But Regionals often take a lot of logistics. You need judges and assistants and compensation for the entire store being shut down except for X-Wing, and sometimes you need table or even space rental. The price covers all that, plus enough profit to make the store want to do it again next year.

If you can't play day two, you can drop even if you make the cut, and you will completely make the weekend of the guy in 17th.

Last year, I went 6-0 at Regionals and then got knocked out by the guy in 18th place because two people couldn't stay for day 2. He went from "go home early" to "win sparkly dice!"

If you're never been to a Regional, go. If you don't enjoy it, don't go again. Simples.

I started playing 100pt X-Wing 14 months ago. Went to a Regional after 4 games. Loved it, because of the friendly, helpful other players I met. Promptly bought tickets for 2 more Regionals and loved those too. At one point, I'd played more games at Regionals than I'd played elsewhere. :)

Don't worry about the prizes or making the cut - unless you have enough time (plus a bit of innate talent) to dedicate to playing X-Wing that you become an awesome player, the reasons for playing should be whether you enjoy playing the game and whether you enjoy the company of others who play the game.

Some people only enjoy tournaments if they have a chance of winning/placing high. I feel sorry for them, because they tend to only win some tournaments (since there are plenty of other highly skilled players, and to some extent who wins does depend on dice rolls) and therefore they only enjoy playing in some of the tournaments they enter. I get to enjoy them all! (Apart from the ones I don't get to enter...not enough time or wife points :( )

I have been upping my game over the past year and a half and feel like it is the next competitive step. My drive is 2 hours to Glen Burnie. May as well play a big tourney or two to make my x-wing hobby worth it!

Im doing a 2.5 hour drive and hotel room(with another player) to make my first regional.

If its close, I would go in a heart beat.
