Requiring Triumph

By CitizenKeen, in Genesys

So, I've been thinking about certain skills (of the knowledge and magic variety), and I'm curious what ya'll think about requiring Triumph?

Specifically, I'm thinking of a Heal check on a dead body requiring a Triumph. This results in resurrection that both (1) is unreliable, and (2) requires a lot of mojo.

Thoughts?

5 Proficiency dice have a decent chance of rolling Triumph, it’s FFG making a statement that resurrection is hard. If it should be easier in your setting then you could add an option of spending 3 Advantage for the effect.

There are some precedents for unique powerful effx in SW so seems fine to me.

I'd make that an Impossible task (which can only be attempted by flipping a Destiny Point). That should make it difficult enough. Note that in Star Wars, resurrection is only possible with a very expensive upgrade to the Heal/Harm power, so there's an argument to be made that this would only be possible via magic.

There's also an item in star wars that can bring back the dead, some sort of cybernetic. I forget the name.

What does that mean for the success/failure of the roll itself? It seems odd that you could succeed at a check (and almost certainly a Formidable one, at that) and still end up accomplishing nothing.

It means resurrection is his game would not be an easily assured result, however, with a highly advanced character in possession of Talents that have been introduced and/or will be it would have a solid chance of success. There a number of Talents from SW I'm sure will be added over supps to Genesys so it's important for people to keep that in mind. Lotsa stuff for influencing dice pool results in SW.

To put it another way the Difficulty has to start exceptionally high so that cool things can be introduced later that makes it easier.

For instance there could be rituals you perform that reduce difficulty, there could be Talents such as Signature Spell that reduces difficultly, there could be equipment that reduces difficulty... but then there’s also the possibility of Hero abilities that add Triumph, or allow dice manipulation to improve triumphs chances.

One might want to differentiate between "mostly dead" and "all dead".

If he's 'all dead' then there's only one thing left to do. Look through his pockets for loose change. ;)

It's a good approach if someone wants resurrection to be an iffy thing in their setting. A really advanced poo bah could get it to the point of better odds than a coin toss, but it still wouldn't be a sure thing.

I've never been a fan of "requires Triumph" talents. It would make sense for Resurrection/Raise Dead, though. For just about anything else, there is almost always a more reliable or useful option.

I don't mind them, if the ADDITIONAL effect is outstanding; making one a conditionem sine qua non for a skill check, though... A Success should always bear success, for what it's worth.
