Defensive hand to hand fighting style

By gandalf9700, in Genesys

In the Talislanta setting there is a fighting style (Mandaquan) that is totally defensive with no offensive actions. I am thinking of creating or putting in some actions to cause strain to the opponent when they attack them. Also add setback dice and things of this nature.

Any other thoughts on this, does this seem plausible? Any help would be appreciated.

If you have access to the Star Wars books, there are a number of defensive Talents that could be used. Defensive Circle, Center of Being, Grappling, etc...

Fighting styles are more defined by talents then skills. Primarily, go for Defensive Stance.

Star Wars has a few other talents to consider. Overbalance, where you can spend Threat/3 Despair from an attackers melee check to stagger them; Parry and Unarmed Parry, the first is in Genesys, but the second allows you to use it unarmed, and Coordination Dodge, which adds Failures equal to your Coordination to enemy attacks.

I think it's called running away......always a good option.....

But sometimes you're having a rumble in the Bronx and you just gotta Jackie Chan it.

Another point of reference is the Ascetic talent Mind Bleed, which allows a character to take strain to return as many wounds as they have taken.

I don't know the setting, but I could imagine a string of talents, with the base being something like "take a Mandaquan Stance action. Until your next round, melee attacks against you take 2 setback, and attackers take 1 wound for every uncancelled threat (ignores soak)".

The most important thing is that the character has to use actions to be effective, or at least a manoeuvre and some Strain. You don’t want to go creating an unhittable character who takes out enemies with no effort.

Agreed. This is going to be hard to balance, IMO. How do you allow the enemy to do a fair amount of damage, while still allowing the user of the defensive technique to win a fight while still having skill and luck play their part.

If it is hand-to-hand, then Unarmed Parry would probably be an important talent. Look at the Martial Artist Specialization in the Bounty Hunter sourcebook.
