Super Duper Dash

By Rich P, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I think the Sheathipede - while having the silliest name of the wave - is the real mvp of the wave.

Below - an option ... PS11 co-ordinate helps both Dash and Ashoka to stay alive versus their usual predators ... start of combat phase action passing likewise.

Dash is a clear contender, but aces like Corran Horn could reappear with the foolish action economy that this provides... thoughts on it?

Fenn Rau (Sheathipede) (20)

Nien Nunb (1)

Ahsoka Tano (17)

I think Dash would have a hard time. Most opponents will gun after him first because the other two ships do not pack the punch... I like the idea though.

If you don't take out his support ships, though, Fenn Rau can make a pretty nasty mess of your ability to attack him, to the point you're attacking him with unmodified dice against a focus and evade token. Against 2 ship lists, it's probably not bad - even against PS11 types, you've got a co-ordinated or ahsokha-ed barrel roll to unmask your guns.

i'm not convinced it's amazing (50% of your squad on support ships seems too much) but it's got to be worth a try...

Dash also has to stay in range 1-2 to benefit from the support ships, which does not create good synergy to his desire to fly all over the place. But it could certainly work first engagement.

Clearly the big challenge would be in keeping the shuttle in range 2 of Dash ... Ashoka has repositioning, the shuttle doesn't.

Giving it Nien nunb increases movement options a bit with the big green straight. I'll give it a spin at my next game night, and see how it fares!

So I ran this out on the kitchen table last night ... 2 games, and won 1, lost 1.

The game I won was an absolute blast to fly ... having absolute control of Dash's engagement is hilarious.

Beat Dengar Bossk quite convincingly ... got the PS infinity boost/barrel rolls going so that Dash was just engaging Dengar out of arc the whole time. Took him off the board in 3 rounds of firing. Even Bossk boba-fetting off my HLC couldn't stop the pain train as Dash just flipped behind Bossk and sat there rolling and boosting out of arc while using banked focus and TL actions.

Second game was against an ion/tractor beam control list. I cocked up my formation in turn 2 ended up in tractor beam and ion **** and never recovered. I think I know what I did badly though, so wouldn't think of it as a hard counter.

Things I learned

Missing Lone Wolf on Dash ... you trade his insane survivability out. I really miss the ability to take lone wolf rerolls on everything ... but the list requires the support craft to be inside range 1/1-2

R2 astromech on the shuttle will probably add more value in mid-game, but the FAA adds so much in keeping the shuttle inside range 1-2 of Dash, especially in early movement. I'm not sure Ashoka adds as much value in the current form ... maybe recon spec instead of op spec to guarantee 2 focus, or move Rey onto her and give Dash another crew.

I'll keep flying it for a while - so much fun ... though I'm not convinced Dash is the best heavy hitter ... I can't think of another ship to sub in ... maybe expertise regen Norra?

I don’t like Nien in this. He only adds 1 more green. I would run the chopper astromech and then put the 0 cost title and a 0 cost mod like guidance chips. That then leaves you room for a 2 point crew.

Something like this.

Unsaved Squadron ( 100 )

Fenn Rau (Sheathipede) — Sheathipede-class Shuttle 20
Adaptability 0
Jan Ors 2
"Chopper" (Astromech) 1
Guidance Chips 0
Phantom II 0
Ship Total: 23
Ahsoka Tano — TIE Fighter 17
Veteran Instincts 1
Operations Specialist 3
Captured TIE 1
Sabine's Masterpiece 1
Ship Total: 23
Dash Rendar — YT-2400 36
Trick Shot 0
Heavy Laser Cannon 7
Tactician 2
Engine Upgrade 4
Outrider 5
Ship Total: 54

You put Jan on the shuttle. She’s support anyway. Putting tactician on Dash adds a stress to the defender when Dash attacks.

Thanks for the comments -

I ended up using Rey on Dash instead of Jan Ors ... having extra action efficiency is a good thing, always.

I think Nien adds more than 1 green ... he is turning the red 4 straight green, which opens up a lot of options. (enhanced by Flight assist astromech)

Though I'm leaning to losing FAA in favour of R2 ... I'm also doubting the value of Ashoka in the current high PS meta. She might be better replaced with a *gasp* second sheathipede!

The list I ran last night was:

Fenn Rau (Sheathipede) (20)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Nien Nunb (1)
Flight Assist Astromech (1)

Ahsoka Tano (17)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Operations Specialist (3)
Captured TIE (1)
Sabine's Masterpiece (1)

Dash Rendar (36)
Trick Shot (0)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Rey (2)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Outrider (5)

So I flew this against 3 Harpoon Nu Gunboats and QD last night. The double reposition at PS11 was amazing, but eventually the number of firing arcs hitting Dash meant he had to move to a place where the shuttle and the tie fighter lost contact. At that point, the shuttle got picked off, followed quickly by most of Dash as my opponent started to spread arcs, and Dash was reduced to single reposition.

By the end, all of his gunboats were on half, QD was dead, as he had cycled his missile boats in and out of range to loose their harpoon and then turn/slam away to reload, before feeding another boat.

I think that the list doesn't work, simply because the support craft struggle to keep up with Dash. It has made me reconsider PTL Dash in light of the emerging gunboat meta as native double reposition plus attacks with mods is awesome vs the arcs of the harpoon gunboats.

I think the squad is still definitely fun for funsies ... but it's too erratic for competition.
