Doesn't the gunboat seem a little short to be a stormtrooper? Or is the silencer too big to be lifted from a swamp?

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing

Just a general size comparison. And I'm certain it's biased by what I imagined the model sizes to be.

But...hmmm...the models feel....odd.

Anyways,it won't stop me from playing them. Just going to have to get used to taking the silencer off the base a lot like the ghost.

The Gunboat was always roughly the size of the X-Wing. Some people think it is larger because the design was based in the Lambda.

Gunboat measures: Length: 10m and Width: 15m. X-wing measures: Length: 13.4m and Width: 11.76m.

But the TIE Silencer... the mini really was made too big. Measures: Length: 17.429m and Width: 7.617m. For comparison, the TIE Interceptor is: Length: 11.45m and Width 8.08m.

Really? Both sources I checked (Wookiepedia and the starwars.com database) list the TIE interceptor as 9.6 m in length. The TIE silencer should be just shorter than two of those end-to-end...I somehow suspect that isn't the case, so it doesn't change the fact that the TIE silencer model is too big.

I reckon the ships are all a bit out of scale. The millennium falcon always felt a bit big, huge ships are off, Awings are way too big... At least game mechanics don't rely on model sizes.

Relying on the accuracy of the wook is a fool's errand.

You live by the wook, you die by the wook

It is Bigger because in modern Hollywood logic bigger is badder and it is a Big Bad Ship.

case and point, USS Giant Evil Ship from the one Even numbered (Star Trek) movie that sucked worse than Nemesis.

Bigger IS badder - just ask 1933 New York, or 1954 Tokyo!

Plus it's a First Order ship. They do everything bigger. Regardless of how little sense it makes.

Finalizer > Bigger than the Corrupter
Starkiller Base > Bigger than the Death Star
Upsilon Shuttle > Bigger than the Lambda Shuttle
Supremacy > Bigger than the Executor
AT-M6 > Bigger than the AT-AT
Snoke's Hologram > Bigger than the Emperor's Hologram
Kylo's Lightsaber > Bigger than Vader's Lightsaber

So yeah. Kylo's TIE twice the size of a TIE Interceptor? Why the **** not. It's not as though resources mean anything in this new Star Wars universe, after all...

You think maybe he's compensating for something?

I'll play devil's advocate here.

The First Order is comprised of a mix of Imperial sympathizers and, more importantly, the remnant of imperial commanders and star ships that jumped into the unknown regions post battle of Jakku. There they were met by the staff and scientists of those stations. These black ops research stations were where the empire was developing the next generation of weapons and vehicles for the galactic empire. You think the First Order built Starkiller Base? Heck, the Empire probably started it decades ago, the First Order merely finished it.

To put it into perspective: Finn was taken from his family and trained to be a storm trooper from birth. That was over 20 years ago in TFA. That means there was a next gen storm trooper training program in place not that long after the battle of Endor. The First Order started with the empire's finest state of the art tech and only improved from there. So yeah, their ships and vehicles will look bigger and badder tham the empire's. They have fewer bodies to throw at problems and so choose to protect them more with next gen tech.
