Back from some Core World Imperial Officers Spa...

By Admiral Sylva, in Star Wars: Armada

Evening Gents,

After a good 10 months hiatus I have returned to the world of Armada and need some of your collective expert advice.

I have missed out on the last couple of waves so I'm looking at building up my Empire collection first to get ready to compete in some UK regionals in March next year. I will list what I own below so you can see the gaps i have.

Also what have i missed?!? Whats been hitting it off and what has been plummeting to earth?

Cheers!

Core Set - Correlian Conflict (Haven't played it yet!)

1 x VSD - 2 x ISD - 4 x Raider - 3 x Gladiator - 3 x Imp Fighters - 2 x Rogues

1 x CR90 - 1 x Nebulon - 1 x Pelta - 3 x Assault Friagtes - 1 x Home One - 1 x Liberty - 2 x Rebel Fighters - 2 x Rebel Fighters II - 2 x MC30 - 2 x Rebel Transports

Welcome back!

If you intend to play competitively, I definitely suggest a couple of Gozantis as your first purchases, given the rest of your collection. Interdictors seem to be generally niche, but can be really fun (see Drasnighta's Nose Punch). Arquentins are advisable for their Admiral, which makes VSDs much more appealing, Reinforced Blast Doors, a handy defensive retrofit card, Minister Tua, an officer who gives her ship a defensive retrofit slot, and in general as the first Imperial red dice broadsiders. The Quasar is a great carrier that some people love and others aren't sure how to utilize, apparently.

I myself don't play competitively, but from what I can tell, Avenger with the Boarding Troopers card from the Quasar expansion, and VSD-IIs with Disposable Capacitors from the same expansion are the current top builds of the Imperials, at least in terms of frequency of use. Raiders with External Racks (from the new Hammerheads expansion) are also popular.

Play with BT Avenger and Demo. preferably 5 activations and a bid for 1st player.

More than anything play what you know.

The players that did the best at a recent regional that I was the TO for were playing fleets they were very familiar with. Their practice with those fleets was obvious based on how I watched them play. The fleets themselves were fairly diverse, but their play on the table stood out.

I’ve also had this borne out in my own experience. I do much better in tournaments with fleets that I know well.

So, my advice in coming back would be to start with a core that you are very comfortable with and mix in a few of the new toys. But focus on getting yourself back up to speed with the things you know best.

Experience and practice >>>>> fleet builds

Its funny - of course its good and hard to beat. But i havent actually seen it win a big tourney yet.

Good news! you only missed 1 wave in your 10 month absence!

It's won one, out of I believe four that I've seen reported. At another it did well, but in a very small field--2nd out of like 8 or so. At another, multiple showed up but didn't break top 50%. Not sure about the fourth, I just remember it didn't win, because @BiggsIRL's Garm travesty did.

edit: Sorry, for some reason my eyes read "big tourney" and my brain read "Regionals." Please interpret my stupid comments accordingly. >.>

Am I the only one wondering what fine Core-World Imperial Officers' Spa @Admiral Sylva has come back from?

I think I was probably there just last week.

Can I join in? Ribbit.

Should mention that you missed a large-scale nerf brand FAQ.

Highlights include:

  • Rhymer range reduced to close
  • Rieekan reduced to once per round
  • TRCs tap now
  • Flotillas can't have commanders
  • Demo can no longer shoot after engine techs
  • BCC overlap doesn't help

Probably best to read up on the current version: https://images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/filer_public/55/d6/55d6c858-619e-4522-b6ca-0ba7b9e7fdcf/armada_faq_v322.pdf
