Rhyn's Rugged Repaints and Rough Ups

By IAmRhyn, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Hey all, I lurked on these forums for over a year before deciding to share my own works. I have no art background and everything I know I picked up from others like Barry Harker on these very forums. My hope is that my works will inspire others to pick up a brush and try their hand at painting, because it's not nearly as hard as it seems.

Here is an index for easy navigation:

The Havoc. I left off the markings on the wings because I don't like decals.

I wanted my X-wing to match my buddy's HotAC Y-wing...

Here are the paints I used:

1.) Complete base coat of Celestra Grey. (4 thin layers)

2.) Mix of mostly Doombull Brown and a bit of Khorn Red (more and more Doombull toward the front of the model)

3.) Layer after layer after layer of Nuln Oil on the engines and wire-y doo-dads behind the droid.

4.) Screaming Skull everywhere That was still light grey.

5.) Super thin layers of Nuln Oil to darken the red closer to the back of the x-wing. These are tiered layers, you can see one clearly on the wings.

6.) Abbadon Black on the cockpit glass, followed by a bit of Nuln Oil Gloss. (Not normal Nuln Oil!)

7.) Caliban Green on the droid, and then Elysian Green on its little droid head.

8.) Black 005 Micron Pen on the engine panels and to edge the red-tan transitions.

9.) Testor's Dull Cote to seal and protect.

Brushes:

I used a Citadel Medium Layer brush for everything except the Nuln Oil. That was a Citadel Medium Shade brush.

Very cool! Solid painting. The T-65 matching the Most Wanted Y-wing is something I haven't seen attempted before, good work!

So have you been painting for those 18 months too? I must admit I get really greedy for pics.

I've been painting Friday evenings since October. Although with classes picking up, I haven't had time in a couple weeks.

More specifics.

Winter break is coming...

I haven't been painting, but Barry Harker's weathering with pencils is a much quicker option. I'll post my finished quadrant of the Ghost, Miranda, and the OT falcon ASAP.

The K-wing has always been a ship that is hard to paint well. I think the only one I really liked was @FalconLugnut 's dazzle camo K-wing. At some point I want to paint one to match the WWII Corsair, as I think navy blue is the best look for the ugly beauty. Anyway, here is my Miranda:

I've also magnetized the base, but I used two flat magnets and all she does is spin around like a top (which is fun, don't get me wrong.) I want to redo the stand so she can bank and pose for the camera, however, I don't know what to use. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The K-wing is not a small ship as far as magnets go. It needs a large-ship magnet, but it can sit on the smaller ball bearing without any issues. Using a small magnet will lead to a wobbly mess. See page 8 for pics of a K-wing with a shake test on a small bearing.

Looks great! Keep it up!

looking good. The two-tone red on the x-wing is great, and who doesn't love blast marks.

Awesome work @IAmRhyn - IAmWaitingInAnticipationOfMore! :)

Awww man!! - now someone HAS to make up a cocktail called 'A Dirty Barry'.

( @Barry Harker - what's your favourite spirit, so we known where to start)

The weathering with pencils: +1!

Because of my limited supply of finished works, here is a teaser of my next showcases:

Question: U-wing or A-wing first?

That U-wing tho'!

Here is my U-wing. It was originally a dark grey, but when I realized how well the red meshed with the X-wing and A-wing, I re-did the grey to match. The panel lines were darkened with a Micron 005 pen.

I've found masking tape to be a struggle. The paint always finds a way under it, or it doesn't want to stick.

Paints:

1.) Full basecoat of Celestia Grey (4-5 thin layers)

2.) Basecoat of Khorne Red (2 thin layers)

3.) Eshen Grey on the engines, canopy, and under-thing (2 layers.)

NOTE: I would suggest using many layers of Nuln Oil instead of Eshin Grey on the engines and doo-dads behind the cockpit.

4.) Shade the red areas with Carroburg Crimson (3 layers.)

5.) Shade the Grey areas with Nuln Oil (1 layer)

6.) Drybrush the engines and doo-dads behind the canopy with Necron Compound. (Make SURE you get 98% of the paint off onto a paper towel before you touch it to the model, otherwise you will have nothing but silver.) Then repeat step 5.

7.) Cover the remaining light-grey areas with Screaming Skull (2 thin layers.)

8.) Mask up the left wing and paint the gold with Gehenna’s Gold (1 layer.)

9.) Detail to taste with Hashhut Copper.

10.) Abbadon Black for the cockpit glass, followed by Nuln Oil Gloss.

11.) Trace the panel lines with a 005 Black Micron pen.

12.) Seal with Testor’s Dull Cote.

Brushes:

1.) Citadel Medium Layer brush.

2.) Citadel Medium Shade brush.

3.) Citadel Medium Base brush (for step 1 only.)

4.) Citadel Small Dry brush.

That's a pen? A PEN?

You're braver then I thought.

There is a fine line between bravery and stupidity. You can see a few spots where it slipped. Just wait until you see the A-wing. It has panel squiggles.

Here is the A-wing. I'm not very happy with this one. The red is way too dark, I did that on purpose because I wanted it to look faster. I realize now that I should have gone with lighter, more garish colors instead (look at racecars/stunt planes.) One experiment I really liked was the stripes of black gloss on the engine pods. It doesn't really show through in the pictures, but I promise it looks cool. ;)

Also note the greens behind the canopy. those are the same greens I used for the astromech on the X-wing.

You can see where my hand slipped with the pen on the panel lines in the pictures above and below.

I think I'll re-gloss the glass and engine stripes. Dullcote really took the shine off.

Paints:

The A-wing Uses the EXACT same colors as the X-wing above. I actually did this one because I got too much paint out working on the X-wing.

Note: The dark grey of the engines is just Celestia Grey with some Nuln Oil to taste.

The Micron isn't just some pen, it's more in the felt-tip family. It's really fine, especially for this kind of detailing. Since you like using Sharpie, Celestial, this would probably be a good thing to snag. Just make sure your paint is done drying before you use it, I really only got about one use out of mine before it decided not to work anymore. :(

I'm going to be posting the paints I used from here on out. I've edited them into my X-wing and A-wing posts, and will update the rest when I get a chance.

WIP Ghost. This one has been fun. I used a brown colored pencil and a cheap eraser (one that smears) to texture the flat surfaces with grime. It's a super subtle effect, but makes a huge difference in making the ship less plain.

n1lFdp.jpg

I tried quite a few tools to scratch up the paint, ranging from a Mr Clean Magic Eraser to an Exact-O knife, but finally settled on the best tool for the job: a tooth-scraper (the non-technical term) that they use at dental offices. It works wonders, scraping off paint exactly where and how I want it. I'll post more pictures when I finish, but am at a loss as to what to do next. I don't feel like it's done, but can't figure out what else it needs.

Okay. I painted a bunch of stuff over break, but need a free image hosting service. Advice?
