2017-18 Regionals Lists

By ThatJakeGuy, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Just by way of an update, I took the same list to BigOrbit regionals on Saturday and got the win. Second through Swiss losing to 1st in round 5, then got my revenge in the final.

29 people in attendance with 3 byes (30.5 players? :) )

Vader + Driven by Hatred

AT-DP

Palp

eJets

Officer

Zillo

I "Think" top 8 was pretty much my list and Alistair's with AT-DP (he ran it with Palp and Riots/Jets), then 6 rebel lists, but I may be wrong as it was a long day. Most rebel lists were Han + Rangers, with Han + Chewie and Rangers + Luke showing up as well (played against Luke, Rangers, Obi in the final)

Quick Regional Recap of what I've played so far:

Glen Burnie, MD 2nd Place (13-14 people):

12/10/2017

  • Vader (RBF)
  • Palp
  • 2xeJet
  • 2xrOfficer
  • Zillo

Thoughts: (Covered earlier in the thread)

Newington, CT 1st Place (11-12 people):

01/20/2018

  • Vader (RBF)
  • eRiot
  • 2xeJet
  • 2xrOfficer
  • Zillo
  • Rule By Fear

Thoughts: I removed Palp and added eRiots and Rule by Fear. I still really like Palp; I think he is a very versatile piece. I don't think he pairs particularly well with Vader. So, I chose to build around Vader instead of Palp. That decision was basically a coin flip. eRiots give you access to on demand weaken which helps in the rebel match-ups and against other eJets as well as being tough bodies that hold objectives on the three "Go stand on a box" missions in rotation currently. RBF makes your starting hand much more reliable. I made large command tweaks as well which made me much happier with the list.

As far as the regional went: I really enjoy this store and community. I made it up to their regional last year and have only good things to say about the shop and how they ran the tourney. Good play space, great folks. They mentioned they have had some trouble keeping the IA community going steady and that attendance has sputtered a bit. I hope this turns around because they are a great group and I would love to come back next year. Final four were 2 Imperial lists, 1 Rebel List, 1 Scum list.

Dallas, TX 1st Place (17-18 people):

02/03/2017

  • Vader (RBF)
  • eRiot
  • 2xeJet
  • 2xrOfficer
  • Zillo
  • Rule By Fear

Thoughts: Same list, changed one card in the command deck. Overall, I feel the list has decent game on all the missions currently in rotation. It prefers the "Go stand on a box" missions to the "Go grab a box" missions. It feels pretty solid against most match-ups, though the mirror match is always a coin-flip. I have yet to hit the pure Hammer and Anvil style Ugh list with this setup, and I have my doubts that this design would hold up very well against those. I may need to bribe a buddy to play it for a while just so I can re-acclimate to playing against Ughs. I'm not really looking forward to that chore. I do hope there is a faq, but that is just beating a dead horse at this point.

As far as the regional went: Going home is always nice. I got to play with a bunch of friends I hadn't seen in a few years and one of my buddies made it to the finals. The last match was a great game it's always exciting to play a close friend in that situation. The turnout was larger than I expected, there was a group that travelers there from Houston, Lubbock, Arizona, North Carolina, and Delaware (Me). I hadn't been in that store in four or five years and it was encouraging to see it was still growing strong! I heard some of the same concerns down in Dallas that I had in CT. Lower attendance in weekly play groups: Some went off to play 8th-ed 40K, some got into Destiney or are waiting to see what Legion looks like, some play more campaign with the app now. It's a mixed bag. Ryan also noted that he was seeing fewer players in NC.

Final four was all Imperial, but there was a bit of an (*) here as a person or two had leave to catch a flight. I think if it had panned out by the winners of the top 8 games it would have been 2 Imperial, 2 Rebel. Also, super props the to dude who ran AT-DP, Palp, Vader, eOfficer, 2xrOfficer and made it into top 4. We played two great games and I barely won each.

Closing Thoughts: The game seems to be in a healthy state. I have seen great rebel, scum and imperial lists in circulation. I worry that there is a sleeping giant in the Ughs that I hope gets faq'd away. I recognize opinions vary on that topic, so we won't stay on it too long. I worry about the reports of declining play groups in the regionals I've attended. I'm going to make the trip out to two others: North Carolina and New Jersey, both in March. I hope there is a different story at those. The attendance to the regionals I've attended so far has been solid. In addition there were 22 folks in Seattle and almost 30 in the UK. I think that's encouraging. I'm disappointed at the Worlds schedule. I'm almost certainly going, but that was a kick in the pants. On the other hand, I loved going to the NOVA Open last year for Nationals and am already getting hyped for that.

I hope to see you all at the various Regionals, Worlds, or the NOVA open. This Regional season has been incredibly fun, and I hope that it closes the same way. Imperial Assault has the best gaming community I have ever been a part of and I am cautiously optimistic about the future.

Thanks!

Lucas you are on a roll!

@Sevenstep I'm bringing a group of four local players to the NC regional. See you there!

I don't think we ever got info from the KS regionals. I know @ryanjamal , @Masterchiefspiff , and others were there. Anything cool to report?

@Matsu Robun beat me in the final. Pretty sure he ran an IG/Sentries list with Greedo/RCP/Hera/eJawa/Devious Scheme. I ran a similar list to what I ran at Omaha, with a couple changes. I wanted to bring in the Sabs for a little extra firepower if I ran into some imperial trooper swarms. Alas, I ran into a Devious hunter group on Nal Hutta.

Han is Han, Drokkatta is a ton of fun and incredibly flexible if you don't overextend her. I added the Sabs for some stun potential alongside Jyn, and access to spy cards. Intel leak is one of the most powerful cards in the game right now. Hera/RCP are pretty self explanatory. I added a bunch of command cards that added modifiers. I was hoping between that and Hera, that I'd be able to finish off some figures when I needed to. Heavy Ordnance is basically a second heavy weapon specific Positioning Advantage. Wanted to have some extra ammunition to throw against some Zillo'd eJets. I even secured a kill against a Jet trooper by playing Lock On to apply a negative evade, which negated the Jet Trooper's ability to covert a block to an evade. That was a fun highlight, and in one of the swiss games, I was able to use my Sabs to stun both Han and Luke during one activation (with some Blitz assistance).

The list performed reasonably well throughout the day, despite being misplayed at times. If I played it again, I'd consider dropping tools for the job and adding Maximum Firepower. I had some fun moments play testing with that, and the Sabs ability to shoot through figures can lead to some pretty solid damage on figures your opponent assumes are safe.

I took it (my recreation of DT's 2 E Riot/E Jet list) to regionals later that week (2/10/18 to regionals in Manhattan, KS), got matched up first round against @wannabepudge ...felt bad we had to play again. It didn't go so hot for him, though I don't think it was his fault at all, I was able to get really good cards and map matchup.

Second round, I played @brystrom1 JK Luke and Han list on Jawa drop of crates mission. I lost...barely...but Han dodged three attacks (finally died) and Luke dodged at least two and survived the game with two health. If any of those attacks had not been dodges I'd have had more power left alive and Luke's death would have been the win.

Third round, I played a 4 act Vader, AT-DP, Sorin, Emperor list on shielded nal hutta. That sucked! He had range and vader to deal with me running up there. I basically decided I had to kill Vader (and score points from objectives) though I could have probably played super passive and ran away to the far side of the map and given up the middle. I won by like two points after finally killing Vader (I think it was like 7-8 attacks from riots/jets/and a force lightning and saber from Emperor). And then putting like 12 damage on his emperor, he force jumped back into his deployment zone and around the corner to save his points. Very tough and close match. I definitely didn't like that matchup.

Fourth round, I played @seef1033 with vader/ejets/ejets/eriots/officers on Jawa control points. This was a chess match and felt like constantly calculating things and it was exhausting. I don't think either of us had fun. He ended up winning after I made it kind of close (closer than I thought I was going to be able to) - I also made the mistake of going through the whole first round thinking the control points were 4 points each instead of 2 - which led me to make some bad positioning and overextending. He didn't kill an almost dead riot end of round, so I didn't get to reinforce it round two and have a fresh new beat stick out there...that sucked. Then he finished that set off in round two.

Fifth round, after miraculously making it into the top 8 at 2-2, I got matched up against @Matsu Robun . Running Iggy scum on Jabba's grab crates mission. I set up in the labryinth. Lost an E Riot mid round, then he stepped Iggy up to take the other E Riot from the other side. So whole deployment gone. It went downhill fast after that. I think I killed a couple of his figs in the end but he basically just had to sit in his base and make me come to him. I'm sure I made some big mistakes in here, but I definitely didn't enjoy this game at all and I over thought a lot and slowed way down. I think I might have had a chance if I'd gone directly through the top and just ran one E Riot of each deployment out just far enough to make a wall to block los into the base then move the other riot from each group into the halls, then move E Jets up some for round two. And as long as my E Riot groups stayed with one each and I didn't lose any E Jet's round 1 I might have a chance to bum rush in and take out a couple of his fire power figs and be able to turn the tide. Had grenadier and reinforcements so it could have been a different game that way. But I was too worried about his door being open and sniping. I think this list needs to get in someone's face as fast as possible without losing a full set of E Riots to then be able to oppressively pull ahead.

Its just too bad there was a critical mistake in the top 4 streamed game - Greedo was removed and no points were added - Empire player won the game with those points, but because they were forgotten, the Scum player wins.

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/230163725

At 38:00 minutes in, Onar dies and the Empire player is now at 22 points

At 47:00 minutes in, Greedo is removed after his parting shot - no points added, still 22

At 48:45 approx in, he adds 12 points for the 3 objectives he controls - the 2 top ones (Terro on one, Riot on the other) and the bottom one (other riot)

At 51:00 minutes in, he kills a Weequay which shouldve been 42 pts total, but forgetting Greedo's points makes that 38 - And the empire player wont be able to score anything else. At the end of that round, the Scum scores 8 objective points and wins 41 to 38.

Sad that there was nothing we could do while we watched that happen!

Empire player scored 28 points of objectives, killed Onar, Greedo, 1 Weequay - Thats 42 total.

Extra Protection was great. All the extra attacks I can get are essential.

@Kalandros

I've not watched it, but if your analysis is correct, that's unfortunate for the players.

When I play in tournaments, I keep a notepad to track both my and my opponent's score and update it anytime points are scored. I then also review the total at that point to ensure my record keeping is correct.

When my opponent is fine with letting me score the game, I always encourage them to also score the game to ensure our totals are correct. I actually lost a game because of my own score-keeping error; I thought I had 2 more points than I did (I didn't roll back 2 points for a Order Hit) and my opponent had the correct score. Quickly we ran back through each point addition, verifying we both lined up until we got to the that discrepancy.

Basically I went all in to squeak to 40 when I really had 38, which meant my Weequay I hung out there got smoked and put my opponent over the line for the win.

I say this not as a bitter regret, but a testimonial to the value of having that two-party oversight to make sure something like that doesn't knock you out of the cut over something like a record-keeping error. You don't want to look back and realize your win wasn't genuine (even if you did not deliberately misrepresent the score) and by the same token you don't want to know that you got sent home only to later realize you should have gone on.

Played this at the Manhattan, KS Regionals. 13 players were in attendance

Went 3-1 in Swiss (4th Place) and then made it to the 2nd round of the cut (losing to the same person for both of my losses).

(Note: before play started, I asked the tournament director how he would rule the On-the-Lam/Collateral Damage if it came up, and after looking at both cards he said "as written, from the new square after on the lam.")

I'll edit this with CC's and more info, but basics from the games:

Game 1, Tony ran Palp and 2x ERiots, ESentries, Zillo and two officers. Jabba's Palace New Ownership . We both went to the labyrinth. I misplayed early and lost four points by "contesting" the LANDING POINT instead of the Stash in the pit with a smuggler v officer. Otherwise pretty close battling in the midsection. He got in decent sneaking with Palp and I did a lot of body blocking with figures - he'd injure Hera and I'd stick Drok in front; shot on Drok and I put Chewie in front, etc, so it took a long time for him to get kills. The ESentries were his big hitters and I spent a fair amount of time trying to "halve" his activations -- dropping an EJet with my big characters before they had a chance to activate. By and large this worked, keeping each of his activations less effective, but he was able to steadily add damage to my big figures, eventually taking both Chewie and Drokatta off the board. My Sabs did good work cleaning up kills for their wookie friends, here. Tony won the game with a final kill with Palp's lightning at the beginning of the fourth round, bringing him from 36 to 40, so that smuggler mistake I made early on meant that I didn't get a responding activation. I think he still had it, but I might have had a shot there to finish off his last ESentry for 5, and then it would have been a race to control stashes. I think he had an EJet in the pit that could have opened the door and taken a shot, or ran back to control the stash. I had one Sab left that could have dropped into the pit, and I think maybe Hera could have finished the ESentry and Gideon could have run to the top or mid stash or something, but I honestly can't remember enough of the final board state to predict what the full play-out would have been.

Round two I played Michael, who ran Han, ERangers and Ashoka with Jyn, Gideon and I think 3P0. This was Raining Freight on Nal Hutta , and he got the bottom zone, so I was nervous about Ashoka's mobility and focused Ranger shots. I think he was a bit over-aggressive, and I had Tools for the Job in my opening draw. He took the middle crate early with Ashoka and moved back towards the terminal, but I landed an 8 point hit with focused Chewbacca from the cliff for early damage. I played activation advantage and hung people back - one early activation was literally just moving Hera sideways two inside the deployment zone to maintain long distance shots against figures defended by 3P0. He missed range on a Han shot, double moved Jyn up for a hair trigger chance (I blocked it step by step with figure positioning). On his big ERanger activation he killed a smuggler (who had already earned his points by picking up a box) with the first ERanger, and used the other two to create a meat shield to Ahsoka, I think landing a decent hit on Drokatta as they went. I got Debts Repaid off of the smuggler death, and fired a lethal shot at Jyn, who On-the-Lam'd away to live, but lost more hair trigger chances. My Sabs finished the round on the far lane of the terminal side, snagging a crate and preparing for a Round 2 swoop onto the injured Ahsoka and her blast-able black die buddies. Michael kept Han played back, and his end of round shot missed on accuracy because my figures were no more than 2 out of my deployment zone. Round two I had initiative and the Sabs went in, grabbing two crates, killing a ranger and splashing damage on Ashoka, but leaving her at 1 hp. This game was probably their most effective play throughout. Michael activated Ashoka and vigor/leapt all the way forward to pull off a huge kill on Drokatta, making back her points before she died (I think I shot her with Hera or Gideon later that round). Chewbacca got forward with slam and a shot to finish Jyn. He took some counter-fire from Rangers, but stayed up pretty easily, rampaging through those rangers on Round 3 with slam and a shot. I can't recall the rest of the playout, but it essentially became Han and an ERanger against Chewbacca, Hera, and 2 sabs. I think I sacrificed 3p0 to block LoS from Han's Round 2 End of Round, but had too much of a firepower advantage and crate pickups from the esabs at that point. Time got called towards the end of round 3 and I was up on mobility, activations, and health; I think I would have kept my lead to 40 if we'd continued, even if Han had killed Chewbacca.

1-1

Round 3 was against @ThatJakeGuy 's list with Vader, Palp, Maul and Onar. I think two officers and zillo rounded it out. Mos Eisley Mission B , bring crates to stashes. I know Jake will do a battle report here too. My plan was to stun Vader with Chewie and run like heck with crates on everyone else. I think I had a shot, but he lured Chewie out early (to shoot the Emperor, I think - I was looking to Debts Repaid later for the Vader shot and a retreat), and then left my smuggler bait alone so DR didn't proc before end of round. A HUGE misplay for me was that I had intelligence leak in my opening hand and forgot to use it during the sabs activation, so I missed the chance to pull force rush (or even just know it was there and keep Chewie back and pull take initiative) from his hand. Long story short, he put huge damage on Chewie with Vader, got and end of round follow up, and orphaned Debts Repaid in my hand round 2. After that he had a cleanup op. I scored over 20 points, mostly from crates, and I think I finally killed Onar, but it was his game from that early misplay. I tried a number of focused San stuns on Vader, but Zillo, Get Down, and good rolls kept all of them from landing. I do think Drokatta hampered Vader's movement a bit with Demolishes through the middle, but his command card build and (if he'd needed it) Onar's ability to push Vader played around that pretty effectively.

1-2

My last game was against Bowie. He ran Vader, Palp, 2x EJets, 2 officers and Zillo. Nal Hutta Shielded , so I had a slight range advantage and he had a slight mobility advantage. I "won" initiative and took the bottom zone, though the cliff problem didn't bother his list because of EJets. Round One, I focused troops and Bowie moved Vader up four squares with officers. I risked an early shot with Chewie to try for stun. It was six spaces away and I rolled 5 ... of all things, he re-rolled into an evade to cancel my accuracy boost, and I'd had Chewie shoot before moving Hera up, not wanting to give Vader his unstunned activation. Probably a misplay - I should have used activation economy to play around Vader and leave him stunned at end of round, maybe run a smuggler up to contest the middle generator.

Apart from that I had a great first round. I soft-passed through enough activations that I prevented any Emperor shot; Palp tempted 3p0, but otherwise he was forced to move Palp up into a cubby, park jets on generators, and wait for me. Drokatta took out one jet on the cliff area crate, leaving it claimable. At the end of the round, I had smugglers on 2 generators and Sabs on the terminal side ones, and he only contested 3. At some point I had used intel leak and pulled out "Lure of the Dark Side" (seems like a great card for this meta!). Round two I stole initiative and slam/stunned Vader out of position, moving Chewie towards the terminals. He got an early jets activation off, killing a smuggler (Debts Repaid) and moving another jet towards the center to threaten an emperor shot on Chewie. I used the refocused Chewie to kill that jet and run farther. He activated Vader, had to shake off stun, but had drawn force rush, which he used to get to Hera and swing. This turned out to be a pivotal moment, though neither of us knew it then; I used stealth tactics, merely thinking to make him spend another activation on killing her. Hera lived with 2 health, and I immediately activated her and ran her all the way around the corner in my deployment zone. My assumption was she'd die to two tempts, but Bowie wound up tempting 3p0 again, and then wound up with no Emperor targets for the second round in a row. He did get Palp down near Vader, ready for a round three swing into the area between my terminal and the lower cliff area, where Chewie and Drok were camping. Meanwhile Gideon tossed a focus to a Sab, who contested a terminal. 3p0, of all things, focused Gideon and sat on a terminal. Round 3 was the rough time. I knew Vader/Palp had easy range to my Wookies at this point, and initiative. Sure enough, they poured around the corner with big hits. Vader finished off Chewie handily. Palp surprised me with a lightning on Gideon and tempt on 3p0, forcing me to respond with an immediate double-move of Gideon away up the side. The Force Lightning had cost Bowie, because he wound up with Palp 1 space away from the cliff-area generator, leaving it uncontested. I got Drokatta out of End of Round range, Demolished the final hp off of an EJet (clearing the cliff area shield for Mission points from a Sab), and killed his officer to pick up 2 points and clear an activation, since he couldn't finish Palp alone. Bowie had one remaining jet, who sat on the far generator, and his second officer had the middle one. My sabs has the two right side ones. He was up 2 points and we each had 2 shields controlled.

Time got called late in round 3, leaving me to find a way to make up the 2-point deficit -- I think we were at 23-25, his advantage. Of all things, it was my battered Hera that saved me! She was able to barely make it to contest the far generator where the jet sat (farthest from terminals), landing in a square where Vader couldn't reach her with end of round force choke. Bowie was pretty frustrated with himself; he had activated/passed his EJet, and if he'd moved into the "normal terrain" square, Hera wouldn't have had the movement points she needed to get into the last space (difficult terrain). She would have had to contest the middle one with the officer, and I'm pretty sure Vader could have force-choked her end of round. Gideon was also at 2 health, but safely behind a meat shield. Vader was left with no melee targets and no force choke kills, and so my score swung up 8 over his 4, turning my 2 point deficit into a 2 point victory. I think it was a frustrating loss for him, and if he had double tempted Hera in rounds 2-3, we would have ended tied. I think with Chewie and Hera, he would have had the tiebreak on figure points. On the other hand, if I had been more patient on turn one with Chewie, I probably could have slam/stunned Vader before end of round, and slowed him down a lot early on.

I ended 2-2, feeling good about taking home a win against ERangers on Nal Hutta and a win against Vader/Palp. Largely, I think my list did what I meant it to, controlling and surviving. I made some misplays that I think are correctable. The MN guys were friendly and great, and so were the Fargo guys - if you have the chance to game here, I recommend it!

One CC change I'd definitely make is Battle Scars, I always wound up holding it, waiting for damage, then playing it for a single token on my healthy Wookiee after the one I expected to take damage died.

Not sure who all made the top 8 (apart from Jake's Imp/Maul list and Tony's Imp list), but it looked like a lot of imperial and rebel ranger lists through the day.

My list:

Chewie with WA (11)

Drokatta (9)

ESabs (7)

Gideon/Hera/3P0 (9)

2 rSmugglers (4)

Love that list. i did a lot of playtesting with that and plan to run this at the next local store tourney here.

I played in the Nashville Regional at The Game Cave this past weekend, and was fortunate enough to come away with the win. I’ve never attempted any sort of batrep before (and I wasn’t planning on doing so during the tournament itself so I didn’t take any notes or pictures while playing), but I figured I’d give it a shot. If anyone who attended wants to chime in and add anything please feel free to do so!

In the weeks leading up to the tournament I was pretty set on running a double Elite Sentry, double Elite Jet, and two officer list, but I hadn’t been having much success with it in practice, so I decided to switch things up literally the night before and run the following (shout-out to the guys from the Jodo Cast, who I basically just stole the list from lol https://youtu.be/6pt7UeJdXIk ):

  • Elite Sentry (10)
  • ATDP (9)
  • Palpatine (8)
  • Elite Jet (7)
  • Officer (2)
  • Officer (2)
  • Rule by Fear (1)
  • Zillo Technique (1)

I used pretty much the same command deck I was running for the previous list, except for I included Prepared for Battle and Collateral Damage:

  • Covering Fire (3)
  • Prepared for Battle (2)
  • Call the Vanguard (2)
  • Shared Experience (1)
  • Collateral Damage (1)
  • Concentrated Fire (1)
  • Armed Escort (1)
  • Brace for Impact (1)
  • Planning (0)
  • Urgency (0)
  • Fleet Footed (0)
  • Positioning Advantage (0)
  • Element of Surprise (0)
  • Take Initiative (0)
  • Targeting Network (0)

So the morning of the tournament rolls around, and my wife and I are about 3 hours into the trip from Atlanta to Nashville when our alternator goes out, leaving us stranded on the side of the road (while it’s pouring down rain). We ended up having to get it towed the rest of the way, and I called the store who was hosting and explained my situation, and the TO agreed to let me participate if I was able to make it by the start of the second round, and I would just take a loss by forfeit in game one. The tow truck driver dropped my off at the shop with a few minutes left in round one, so I just barely made it in, but it wasn’t exactly the start I was hoping for and I knew I had an uphill battle by starting off 0-1 before I even rolled any dice.

Round 2 (0-1):

Stashed Away, Mos Eisley Back Alleys

My opponent was fairly new to the game (I think he said our game was only like the 8 th he had ever played), and he was running a Scum-Hunter list with Bossk, Vinto, Onar, Jabba, eWeequay, a regular Clawdite, and I think Greedo. He had just gotten Heart of the Empire the week before so he had never seen Sentries, Palp, or the ATDP, and underestimated the range of the Sentries a little, so he ended up leaving a few of his figures pretty exposed. Also Mos Eisley is great for the ATDP, as with the help from the officers you can get set up in those short corridors with the terminals at the end of round 1 and have line of sight to a pretty big portion of the map. I was able to take out a few figures and score enough objective points to give me a 41-11 victory. Our game ended pretty quickly so we got to hang out and talk for a bit, and he was a really cool guy so I hope he continues playing.

Round 3 (1-1)

Spoils of Crime, Jabbas Palace

My opponent was running eRangers, Han with his fix, Lando, 3po, Gideon, a regular alliance smuggler, and I think either Balance of the Force or Rebel High Command (or both). In my practice games with the 2xSentry and 2xJet list I was planning on bringing I had a ton of trouble with Rangers/Han, as Rangers just chew through Zillo and Han could almost one shot most of my figures, so I was a little nervous about this matchup. I was on the side without the stairs, and we both opened our door pretty early on, but I had used my officers to move the ATDP down the hall so his Rangers wouldn’t have line of sight from their deployment zone. He then played pretty aggressively with his Rangers and Han, running them both out to take a shot at a Sentry and Jet that were left in my deployment zone, and I ended up losing a Sentry pretty early on, but since I had moved everyone down the hallway he couldn’t really get any more shots on me. However, since he had moved everyone out into the throne room area, by the end of round 2 I had taken out two rangers, Han, Lando, the Smuggler, and I think 3po, so he conceded as all he had left was one ranger and Gideon against pretty much my whole list. I ended up winning 28-5, and moved to 2-1.

Round 4 (2-1)

Concealed Treasures, Mos Eisley Back Alleys

This was my first game on the stream, and my opponent was 3-0 and playing a Scum list with Ig-88 and Focused on the Kill, Elite Sentry, Elite Weequay, Vinto, 3po, an Elite Jawa, and Devious. I never like seeing IG across the table, as it’s been my experience that if he gets Blaze of Glory off I usually have a hard time winning. This was a very close game, as both of us played very conservatively, so there were a lot of very long range shots played as we stayed in our deployment zones for the most part. I don’t remember much from this game (I guess I should’ve just watched the stream before typing this up lol), except for the ATDP must of soaked up at least 9-10 shots, as he fell short on range 3-4 times throughout the match. At one point he ran Vinto up, and from 4 spaces away took a Tools for the Job shot on the ATDP with a damage power token and rolled max damage, but whiffed on the accuracy. I scored 8 points from crates and I think killed both his sentries, and he scored 4 from dropping one off and he eventually took out the ATDP and I think a Jet, so when time was called I was up 18-17, but we had to finish out the round. He used Vinto to take out my other sentry to put him up to 22, and all I had left was Palp, who activated and tempted his Jawa to death, but I had no other way to put up points, so I ended up losing 22-21 at the last second. However, he had Blaze of Glory sitting in his hand, so even if I had managed to get ahead of him somehow he would have just re-activated IG and blasted away my last jet, so there wasn’t much I could do at that point. It was a great game though and he was a great opponent, so it was a lot of fun even though I ended up taking the loss.

So after swiss I was sitting at 2-2, but both of the opponents I had lost to (my round 1 forfeit and round 4 opponent) were the only two at 4-0, so I ended up placing 7 th due to my strength of schedule. My goal from this tournament was to get those sparkly dice, so I was very glad to have made the cut.

Top 8 (2-2):

New Ownership, Jabba’s Palace

This was technically a “rematch,” as I played the opponent from my round 1 game which I had to miss. He was actually running the double Sentry/Jets list I had practiced so much with, so I had a fairly good idea of the general strategy, and was a wary going into it because it has so many models with Pierce 2. My strategy was to go after his Sentries early and try to take them out as quickly as possible. He won initiative and chose the side without the stairs, and round 1 was basically a mirror match, as both of us pitched Targeting Network for Rule by Fear and moved our forces down each hallway towards the maze area in the middle. By the time I activated my ATDP a majority of his units were down by his terminal, so I double moved the ATDP out in the middle of the throne room at the top of the maze area, so I had line of sight running down both hallways on either side of the middle. I was also able to play Urgency on a Sentry and move him down to get a shot on one of his Sentries during round one, and my ATDP was able to finish it off with Palps attack as my last activation round one. I think at the start of round 2 I was able to get off Covering Fire and Call the Vanguard to stun another one of his sentries, but from there the rest of the round is pretty fuzzy. The ATDP’s positioning was key in this game, as he wasn’t able to really move his forces out of the hallway in his deployment zone without risking taking multiple shots from it, so I was able to be pretty aggressive. He had sent a Jet into the rancor pit to hold that objective, so I sent one of mine down there as well and got off an Element of Surprise attack, which left him at 1 health, so Palp finished him off and I also got those 4 points from the objective at the end of the round. The highlight of this game though definitely belongs to my opponent, who at one point moved an officer up and attacked one of my sentries for a whopping 4 damage (he rolled 2 damage on blue, 1 damage 2 surge on yellow and I rolled an evade lol). However, I was able to mop up the rest of Sentries and score some objective points and ended up taking the game by a score of 37-19. I feel like this game really could’ve gone either way, but I was able to draw the right command cards before he did (having Planning in my opening hand definitely helped), and just like that I was in the top 4!

Top 4 (3-2)

Shielded, Nal Hutta Swamps

Nal Hutta was the one map I was not looking forward to playing on, as I haven’t practiced on it as much as the other two, but Shielded is the more favorable mission for my list so I felt pretty good going into it. My opponent was running double eWeequay, Onar with Prey on the Weak, Vinto, Greedo, 3po, Gideon, a regular Jawa, and I think Devious and Black Market. He chose the bottom so I got the top with the pond, which honestly isn’t as bad with my list so I didn’t mind. He was very worried about leaving anyone open to taking shots from the ATDP, so most of his first round he kept everyone but the Jawa (who ran to the terminal) and Greedo (who ran to contest a Shield) in his deployment zone, which also meant that halfway into round 2 he had 4 focused, hidden Weequays, which is a little terrifying lol. I don’t remember a ton from this game, as by this point I had been playing for over 6 hours. I did jump out to a lead of 22-0, but my opponent climbed back into it and made it a very close finish. Essentially at the end of the game I had 38 and he had 35, and I had a Sentry who had already gone that was badly damaged and in line of sight of a Weequay (I don’t think it was focused or hidden), which would’ve been the game if he had gotten the kill. I double moved an officer to sit in front of the Sentry and block line of sight, and his Weequay couldn’t move up far enough to get the shot on my Sentry so he took the shot at my officer. He rolled more than enough damage to take him out, but the officer cowered and rolled a dodge, and he didn’t have anything in his hand to remove it. Beginning of next round I played Take Initiative and killed 3po with one of the Sentries, which put me to 40 and ended the game.

Championship Game (4-2)

Stashed Away, Mos Eisley Back Alleys

Let me start out by saying that I didn’t really think I had a serious chance at playing in the final, as I only really got into IA back in November and this was only my second big tournament I had attended (also the fact that I hadn’t practiced with this list at all). Needless to say, I was thrilled to be playing in the final game, and was pretty worried I’d let my nerves get to me. My opponent was running IG-88, eWeequay, Onar, Vinto, Greedo, Gideon, and 3po. He won initiative and picked the blue deployment zone, so I got the red one, which is the deployment zone I had all three times I played this map. Pretty early on he started moving his guys down the hallway where his terminal is, except for Greedo, which he ran across the map to control the crate at the top left (if you are looking at the map and the blue deployment zone is in the top right.) Usually I use my officer to move the ATDP right on top of the terminal so it can open the door to the middle hallway, but since I didn’t think he could move anyone else to shoot at me I pushed the ATDP up to the door, and then opened it and repositioned so I would be in the middle at the beginning of round 2. I then used my Sentries to take shots at Greedo from 7 spaces away, as I figured he couldn’t hit me back, but sure enough his parting shot managed to make the range and do a solid 4 damage to a Sentry. Meanwhile he had moved IG down the long hallway on the right and taken a shot at my Jet who was attempting to control the crate at the bottom, did some damage, and then played Opportunistic to move a focused Weeqay closer to get a shot at the damaged Sentry. The Weequay killed him, and then Blaze of Glory was played, so my Jet got obliterated, and at the end of the round he was controlling 3 objectives, and I had none. At the start of round 2 I was able to pull off the Covering Fire/Call the Vanguard Combo again and stun IG with my other Jet, which was huge because he only got off one attack instead of two. I’m pretty sure he played Take Initiative at this point, and his Weequays moved up and took out my remaining Sentry, so all of a sudden I was down 20-4 and a fairly significant portion of my offensive output was gone. My ATDP attacked twice and took out his Weequays (one was left on 1 health which Palp then tempted to death). Things get a little fuzzy after this point, he did a lot of damage to the ATDP, and I finally managed to take out IG by force lighting him a couple of times. By the last round I had 37 points to his 31. I was in control of 4 crates, so he used Onar’s Rush to do a damage and then attack my Jet, but I was able to Zillo and keep him alive by one. He just had Gideon left after that, and he couldn’t contest or remove enough of my figures to keep me from getting to 40, so the game ended at 41-31, and I went home with the trophy!

Some closing thoughts: I hadn’t exactly written off Palpatine, but I definitely didn’t think he was as good as everyone was saying. Looking back over the tournament he was definitely my MVP though, because I feel like he adds so much more to the ATDP. A lot of the people I played ended up being pretty conservative, because even after the ATDP had gone they had to worry about a fairly hefty shot coming their way, which allowed me to contest objectives and be more aggressive with my troopers. Anyways, I better wrap this thing up (I apologize for the length, I tend to get carried away talking about this game), and just want to give a big thanks to The Game Cave and all of my opponents for an awesome experience!

A little late to posting this, but I had a great time at the KS Regional. I love playing with the KS guys, and at this point I mainly see familiar faces when I head up there.

I had gone to the Omaha Regional a couple of weeks before, so I wanted to try something different. This time around, I wanted to focus on Heavy Weapons, mainly because I frickin love Drokkatta :-). So, I brought her into Scum and paired her with BT.

Here was my list:

Drokkatta 9
eQuays 7
BT 6
-with Explosive Armaments 1
Hera 4
Greedo 4
eJawa 3
rJawa 2
C3PO 2
Temp Alliance 1
Devious 1

------------------------------------------------

Assassinate
Tools for the Job
Heightened Reflexes
Lock On
Collateral Damage
Blitz
Stealth Tactics
Negation
Strength in Numbers
Explosive Weaponry
Officer’s Training
Urgency
Take Initiative
Element of Surprise
Fleet Footed

My goal here was to maximize the splash damage and blast of BT and Drok, while having enough units to contest objectives. Really, BT, at 10 health, isn’t beefy enough to anchor a list, but he’s a fun pairing with Drok and I had a lot of fun. With the right string of cards and positioning, you can toss 5 or 6 damage on a figure adjacent to the attacker, or 4 to someone two away. That’s why I took Explosive Armaments over Targeting Computer (which really is way better): I wanted to see how much splash damage I could deal out.

In Omaha, I saw a lot of the Han and Smugglers’ Box lists, but this time around there was considerable variety. I had a bye so I started off 1-0 (lol), then I lost to Matt ( @Matsu Robun ), the eventual winner, who was piloting @Brigadierblu ’s list that won the Omaha Regional: Iggy, eSentries, Greedo, eJawa, Hera, Gideon, 3PO, and (the real MVP) Devious. @Brigadierblu lives just down the road from me. I’ve played that list more than I care to :-). . It was a close game on the Jawa map, mission B. It could have gone either way. If I had gotten two surges with my focused Drokkatta attack, or if I had positioned differently, I might have been able to pull off the win, but he took it, 26-24. In the end, I couldn’t get to his remaining figures in time to finish them off (well played, Matt!).

My next match was against Pat ( @wannabepudge ), who was playing Han, Drokkatta (!), eRangers, two smugglers, Gideon, and 3PO. His misfortune was that we were playing Shielded on Nal Hutta. I had Devious so I took the unfair advantage side :-). He put his Rangers over on the left side by the water, and Drokkatta and BT took out all three before they had a chance to activate, and I also took out Han before he could do much as well, I think. I really don’t know how to play the top side of this map. It’s so exposed. 2-1

My last game of swiss was against Chris ( @JasterMareel ), playing Jawa side A. His list was eRangers, eQuays, Vinto, Gideon, Onar, and Jabba. I focused on taking out his Rangers early and then gained enough objectives and took out enough figures that I won this 40-26.

So, I was feeling okay going 3-1 in swiss, losing only to my nemesis list :-). But then I immediately lost in the Top 8 match, which was a rematch against Chris.

This time we played on Jabba’s map. I took unnecessary risks in the beginning and got out of position, and I also somehow forgot that I had dealt 5 damage to Vinto early on and could have killed him easily, but instead went after Weequays, allowing him to come in and wipe three figures in one activation (ouch it was brutal). Hats off to Chris, who played well!

Overall, this was a fun list that has some potential, but it feels not quite top tier since BT isn’t tanky enough to serve as an anchor. It also struggles when I can’t take advantage of blast, which isn’t that hard to avoid. Still, it's competitive and just goes to show that you can take weird lists and have fun and still come out with a good record, as long as your know your list.

Mainly, I had a fantastic time playing with great people. Anytime you have a chance to make it to a KS event, go for it! (Shout out also to @Masterchiefspiff , @Fightwookies , @brystrom1 , and @seef1033 , whom I didn’t get to play, but had a blast with nonetheless. I guess another shout out is due to @Brigadierblu , for being too lame to come and because again his list thwarted me ).

This meta is balanced and diverse, folks. It's a great time for IA :-)

I'll make a slight but very very important correction, haha. Han was my work horse. Never took any damage and beyond all the odds, took out the deadly Jawa (regular I believe). Only kill of the match, so he should be given a medal.....well, another one.

I'm pretty sure Drok and BT took out all 3 rangers and Drok in a total of 5 shots. Stupid Explosive Armaments. You kicked my butt, so cheers to you sir!

@bshafer great writeup! I was going to be in Nashville last weekend but couldn't make it. Sorry I missed a chance to meet you in person.

I'm excited to hear you were using Covering Fire. For a while I was running dual eSentries with the idea of having a Covering Fire + Multifire party in round 2 (with the idea that my eSentries would be doing 8 attacks on 4-6 targets, and if they hit a Stunned figure they'd get the SURGE for +2 DMG to use). But I think in 10 games I drew Covering Fire for round 2 just twice!

LMFAO! :D

Québec City had its Regional today, unfortunately we couldn't do a Top 8 due to closing hours... very unfortunate!

I went 4-0 and then lost in the "sudden death finals" since we werent doing a top cut. I definitely lost because of one error on my part. Plus it was a rematch so my opponent knew a bit more what to expect, oh well!

My list:

  • [12] elite Alliance Rangers
  • [07] Ko-Tun Feralo
  • [04] Hera Syndulla
  • [03] C1-10P
  • [03] Gideon Argus
  • [03] Mak Eshka'rey
  • [02] Alliance Smuggler
  • [02] Alliance Smuggler
  • [02] C-3PO
  • [02] Rebel High Command

Game 1 - Mos Eisley Back Alleys - Mission A (Crate control)

My opponent, Christian, brought a gunner Luke list with eRangers, eSaboteurs, R2D2, Mak, Gideon and other things.
Due to my Hera, my Chopper was next to the terminal without activating, and I had Single Purpose in my hand: R2D2 takes 5, he flips a card.

Now the crazy thing is that this card was the only card I would be able to play for the entire game - it lasted only 2 rounds and on that 2nd round he played Mak's card: Shadow Ops. Well then...
But it turns out I didn't need any of my cards. He opened up on my Hera with a ranger after a failed Saboteur attack (due to range) - those two would go down immediately after and he didn't have enough movement with his other 2 rangers to shoot anything of mine as I played mostly safe except for that one spot a range could shoot (but no one else). Round 1 ends with me controlling 5 crates and him 1, so 18-2 (due to the eSab and eRanger I shot down).

Round 2 didn't go better for him - he shot both rangers into my Ko-Tun who was next to C-3PO I believe and he survives with... 1 HP! I started with Chopper finishing up R2D2, I sniped Gideon and killed another Ranger and would've scored 6 more points at the end of the round from boxes, him only 2 again.

So even if Hera and Ko-Tun hadn't lived on 1 hp, I'd have been up by a lot game would've been 34-4 (or 34-15 had those 2 not lived) and he conceded at that point. He took too many chances that didn't pay off and was too scared to commit to those crates to contest points - but my activation advantage had him trapped.

Game 2 - Nal Hutta Swamp - Mission B (Its raining points~ )

My opponent, Jean-Francois, had a very very similar list to mine but he had Han instead of... a lot of things eh? So eRangers, Han, Ko-Tun, Hera, Gideon, C-3PO, Smuggler. I won initiative so of course I took it and the best deployment spot! First round saw me use my smugglers to force him out - I took 1 crate, a small 2 points there, killing my smuggler then wouldn't matter, he made his points already! I focused Mak with Gideon, moved him up 2 and gave him Ko-Tun's Hit Power Token... I know my line of sights in Nal Hutta (: Walked up a few steps and sniped his C-3PO who had only taken 2 steps outside of his deployment zone and was boxing Han and Hera. Oof! That's a sweet freebie (: I move him back 1 step to finish his movement.

At that point my opponent didn't have his defensive box so he moved up to shoot my smuggler and my 2nd one got long-range sniped on the terminal by one of his rangers.. welp there goes my 2 runners! And his Han solo got drawn in to shoot my Mak and shot him down. I just lost 3 of my 9 activations on turn 1..... eh its okay! He's done playing... I got my rangers (: 3 shots later, dead Han. (no 'On the Lam' thankfully and no [X]!)

At that point he says its over but of course keeps playing, and he came close to making up for the difference as I gotta admit, I once again put my Hera and Ko-Tun within easy reach just by wanting to grab crates to deny him crates... bad trade off honestly, ESPECIALLY with Ko-Tun being my highest cost figure. Round 2 I scored 3 boxes, killed 2 rangers. He killed ranger, a box, and Ko-Tun. 28-20, I gotta finish this fast!

Round 3, we had both lost a lot of things already, I managed to kill a smuggler and get 3 boxes... bringing me to 36, while he got 2 boxes, gideon, a ranger and Hera, 36-35. Time ran out but I was going first and 2 crates were spawning so it was over even if we started another round, double move to get the last 4 points easy. Very close game, gotta be careful with Hera and Ko-Tun!

Game 3 - Jabba's Palace - Mission A (take a crate, lose speed)

Played against Benoit who brought Chewie, eRangers, eEchos, Gideon, C3PO, Chopper and Balance of the Force.

He learned the hard way how dangerous it is to open that door even if you also have rangers - having 9 activations, my rangers are going last, dead last, on turn 1.

Round 1 saw me do the same thing I did in the previous game: snipe C3PO through someone else using Focused Mak + Hit Power Token to cancel that dreaded X. I downed an Echo trooper and a ranger, took some damage. Also Mak's kill saw me take out his Chewie card (Critical Hit randomly removes 1 card from the opponent's hand). That sure helps take off the pressure. His rangers did make a dent through my stuff, on top of chewies' rainbow attack. I lost a ranger, a smuggler and hera. 14-10 at that point but he had things that were hurting.

Round 2 I believe I opened up with Call the Vanguard and killed the other Echo, that turn I also shot down Gideon and made 4 points with boxes. He only managed to kill my Mak that turn and wounding or missing my other figures. 21-13

Round 3 I killed a 2nd ranger and scored 3 boxes, he Urgencied his Chewie and wrecked my Kotun with his attack + free slam. 31-20

Round 4 ended it, while he got my Gideon and C3PO, I killed his 3rd ranger (he only had chopper and chewie left) and scored 8 with boxes at the end for 40+ to 25 at the end.

Game 4 - Jabba's Palace - Mission B (stash control)

Yvon, with the 'dreaded' Vader, Palp, double eJets, double officer, Zillo list... another who needs to think twice before opening doors BUT of course - if you don't open it on Mission B, you give your opponent an easy 8 points with 2 stashes uncontested and the fight for the middle one.

He opened the door and made 0 points on round 1. Mak long-range sniped an unactivated Officer (whew, just before moving Palp up) and then my rangers.... actually managed, with Assassinate, to open up Palpatine and do exactly 13 damage after all was said, calculated and done. All 3 stashes contested. 14-0 ( I forget if I killed the first jet here or right at start of round 2 with vanguard)

Round 2 saw me lose 2 rangers, a smuggler and gideon to Vader and jets but not before I scored an officer and a jet. Ending with 1 stash in my control. 24-13

Round 3 I finished Jet #3 and Jet #4, choking the life out of his list, only Vader left up and about. He took out Hera and his Vader did the super MAX DAMAGE attack on Kotun which means ... dead Kotun!
I have all 3 Stashes at the end, ending over 40 again, to 24.

Game 5 - the "fake top cut" - Mos Eisley Back alleys - Mission B (bring home the bacon)

Rematch against Game 2 opponent, JF, with han, eRangers, Kotun, etc~ ;p

A single mistake on top of a single ... bad timing on good luck I'd say? saw me fail to kill Han by ONE damage. 2 Rangers did 11 damage but the 3rd one could not go far enough to attack. This was to be the decisive factor in me never quite coming back into the game. I wasn't taking notes by that point, focused on trying to make it out with the win but I failed in the end, by 1 crate. Lost 36-40. We both played really really well.

So what I meant by mistake: I tried to do a range 12 shot on Mak and was short by 2. Just needed strong blue accuracy but it failed me, oh well... That 'attempt at a repeat of the previous game' meant my only focused ranger could not join the battle unless Mak died.

And now what I meant on bad timing for good luck: He didn't notice my ranger problem and took a shot at Mak (which I REALLY hoped would die) but of course, RNG would have its way with me: I rolled an [X] I did NOT want.

RIP. Thats literally what stopped me from killing Han (who again had no On the Lam ready...) He got his end of round shot, started the other round and ran off and I only managed to get him later with Call the Vanguard but the damage was done, I was always one activation behind to get the upper hand.

Great fun for my first IA tournament (I'm an Xwing veteran :P ) and that ton of practice my friends and I had in the last month really paid off: I found something fun and I believe unique enough to play and it worked really well. Though I still struggle to defeat my 2 practice buddies! (:

TL;DR : Got my dice and everything but the Bye for the Nationals coming up in 3 weeks.

I love this game.

16 players, all with different lists - no repeats though some 'similar' and honestly, maybe too many ranger lists but eh, look at the maps on the rotation hah!

Top 4 had 2 Rebels, 1 Imperial and 1 Mercenary

Top 8 had I believe 4 Rebels, 2 Imperials and 2 Mercenary?
