Wango Tango-Double Silencers

By Celestial Lizards, in X-Wing Squad Lists

15-point initiative bid-why not?

Test Pilot "Blackout" (31)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire-Control System (2)
Threat Tracker (3)
Autothrusters (2)
First Order Vanguard (2)
Kylo Ren (TIE Silencer) (35)
Push the Limit (3)
Advanced Sensors (3)
Primed Thrusters (1)
Autothrusters (2)
Total: 85
Once we get news of the generics I'll probably put them in here, but how about it? Is a double Silencer list feasible?

Kylo Ren (TIE Silencer) — TIE Silencer 35
Debris Gambit 2
Fire-Control System 2
Threat Tracker 3
Autothrusters 2
Ship Total: 44
Test Pilot "Blackout" — TIE Silencer 31
Debris Gambit 2
Fire-Control System 2
Threat Tracker 3
Autothrusters 2
Ship Total: 40

Or this.

As pretty as the ships are 2 is not going to cut it. 12 total health means 0 margins for error. No bumping, one bump and you may not have a ship. Addionally there isn’t a title like x-7 to create token stacking. I think personally with the Silencer it’s more of a ship that gets where it wants but likes to have wingmen to compliment it in such a way it either gets stronger or creates opportunities for it to gain additional actions or prevent having actions being taken away.

You have a fundamental lack of firepower, too. No matter how awesome focus/target locked shots (or whatever) are, fundamentally, you only have 6 dice, maybe 8, meaning that you will seriously struggle to bring down anything big or swarmy over the course of a game.

Can it work?

Probably. Anything can work with sufficient time, practice, luck, and polishing and tweaking the list via experience.

  • Pilots: Kylo Ren and Blackout.
    • This is a given. You can fit in 3 if you take generics, but you probably lose a lot of capability.
    • As a rule, you'll want to knife fight with Kylo (dogfighting in close where a boost or barrel roll gives a huge amount of angular movement to avoid arcs, and hence where his PS9 matters most and he can get his range 1 bonus easily)
    • By comparison, Blackout wants to snipe from behind debris at range 2 or 3.
  • Title
    • Obviously you're going to use it. My advice is that it gives you a reroll to hit and a situational 'oh, bugger' green dice reroll. Therefore putting it on a ship with Fire Control is a waste as you can't reroll a reroll, and it probably wants to go on the more expensive ship and the one most likely to be shot at. I'd put it on Kylo Ren 9 times out of 10
  • Elite
    • Kylo - Push The Limit or Veteran Instincts is a metagame call, but I'm going to come down on Push The Limit by default. You need action economy. You want the pilot skill advantage, but you have to accept you're not always going to get it ; other PS11 pilots exist, as does at least one PS12 pilot (Epsilon Ace) and the possibility of PS0 (Torkil Mux, Maarek Stele 'selectacrits', Blinded Pilot criticals from another Kylo Ren player). Sooner or later you're going to have to go first and plan rather than react; you might as well accept this and build your ship to be capable of it.
    • Blackout - Veteran Instincts is a more sensible call on him because equal PS is good, but it's also less important. You're not going to be flying your only two ships in close formation, after all. Trick Shot is nice (and cheap) but you clearly aren't playing the economy game with just two silencers. Debris Gambit is nice because it's essentially adding the evade action - but you will need another source of attack modification or you're wasting your 'sniper's shot'
  • System
    • Kylo - Advanced Sensors. Having said push the limit and close in dogfighting, this seems like a given. It avoids self-stressing and being blocked, the two easiest ways to kill an ace.
    • Blackout -Fire Control System. I said put the title on Kylo above. given that, FCS is the easiest way to get reliable red dice modifiers, even if you're losing actions from collisions or stress.
  • Tech
    • Kylo - Advanced Optics or Primed Thrusters. With advanced sensors you shouldn't need Primed Thrusters too, so I'd say Advanced Optics
    • Blackout - Advanced Optics. Gives you the focus you wouldn't have with Debris Gambit.
  • Modification
    • You can equip autothrusters.
    • Autothrusters are awesome for ships weaving around turrets at close range (Kylo) or sniping from long range (Blackout).
    • Copies of autothrusters comes in the box.
    • Take autothrusters.

  • Kylo Ren
    • First Order Vanguard
    • Push The Limit
    • Advanced Sensors
    • Advanced Optics
    • Autothrusters
  • Test Pilot "Blackout"
    • Debris Gambit
    • Fire Control System
    • Advanced Optics
    • Autothrusters

is 85 points. Meaning technically you can also field Jim-Bob, the brand new Epsilon Squadron Pilot rookie, to fill out the points.

You know Jim-Bob's totally going to outperform the two TIE/vn, right? It's just how this game works....

This on two PS6 generics...

But you really want VI on them...

While I think flying both of the unique silencers could be cool, you need to fit a third ship in. Here's my suggestion:

Blackout

Trick Shot

Collision Detector

Pattern Analyzer

Title

AT

Kylo Ren

PTL

Adv. Sensors

Primed Thrusters

AT

Imperial Trainee

Adaptive Ailerons

LWF

Blackout is cheap, but can go pretty much right over any debris with impunity, keeping soft mods with the title. Kylo is one of the standard Kylo builds. The Trainee is the most cost-efficient source of red dice in the game, providing a fun, useful little accessory who can keep up with the Silencers surprisingly well.
