Newish player 100 point First Order list

By t3hjim, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey, I've been playing armada for a long time now but have recently decided to take the plunge into x-wing. I've had a few practice games but am still very much getting the feel of the game. I really like the idea of an upsilon coordinating a load of ties. I'm thinking of going for a high average PL as my first iteration fell flat against a ghost/phantom list largely (I think) due to low PL. Here's my attempt at a new one! I think Striden handing out target locks + focus to the omega ace along with Ren's ability should work well against the ghost by providing a guaranteed blinded pilot when needed. Any comments or ideas would be much appreciated!

So what I can see your list struggles to push damage through effectively. A Swarm is more shots and since it moves first they have mods usually. Aces get blocked and lose actions and large ships even more so. Kylo and coordinating are both Actions so you have to pick and choose which one and where. Zeta leader at ps8 is not terrible but usually you want him to have wired and/or a way to clear stress easily to make use of the self stressing.

The Ghost is only as big of an issue as you let it be. Typically the big thing with the ghost is the wingman. Were it me I might try something more like this....

so your Stridan minus the Title: add collision detector it’s free!

Omega Leader with Juke and Comm relay

Omega Ace

Epsilon Squadron.

With the Officer giving out the TL to Ace you can just take a focus action to have the pair. The Epsilon becomes a blocker/harasser.

Thanks very much! Still getting used to the game so really appreciate the advice. Redrawn the list, added adaptability to the omega as it's free and lets him act before Hera's Ghost. Still learning the maneuvers + Hera's ability to change hers may have made me overcompensate. Managed to get behind me with that speed 5 Koiogran and basically remove my shuttle. Won't make that mistake again and hoping Kylo will help out there. Playing on Friday will let you know how it goes!

I love the idea of a full F/O list.

Stridan is a very cool pilot, but I like to really capitalize on his pilot ability: Systems Officer and Hux have great synergy. Yes, you don't get Kylo, but instead, you provide a LOT of action economy to your wingmates.

Alongside that, you could fit a budget Blackout (Trick Shot, Collision Detector, Title, PA) and Omega Leader, or ditch Blackout for a couple TIE/FOs, or some Spec Forces...honestly, so many options.

Same, I really like the look of the ships and have always been more of a 'fluff' player than competitive, but only just! I ran a list with Hux, 2 base FOs and Omega Leader in my first couple of 100 point games but I don't think I'm experienced enough yet to play the more nuanced game. Thought I'd give the pure beat stick of Kylo a whirl, but would like to go back to the other when the silencer comes out (counting down the days!)

  • If you want Stridan, I'd echo Hux and Systems Officer.
    • Systems Officer is amazing value on Stridan, as it's a free target lock a good half or more the time on whichever TIE fighter wants it most.
    • Hux gives you focus tokens for everyone and a sort of mobile autoblaster upgrade for whoever has the best shot - a good way for 2-dice TIE/fo to punch through mountains of tokens and green dice.
  • If you want to support him, you want more TIE fighters, though. Stridan is unmanouvrable and needs support ships to cover his catastrophic inability to turn corners.
    • I'd seriously consider 4 generic epsilons and electronic baffle on the shuttle.
    • If you want to drop to three TIE/fo, I'd definitely try to get in Omega Leader! Throw in Adaptability Zeta Leader and a generic Epsilon, and you've got a decent-ish swarm.

I do like the idea of a buffed up swarm and will definitely give that a go. Currently struggling to fly 4 ships well, so will probably stick to aces for the next few games at least! Thanks for the thoughts all, I've managed to draw up 5 very different lists and am looking forward to giving them all a go at some point. List I'm going with later today as it's most similar to what I've flown before:

Major Striden 32

Kylo Ren 3

Systems Officer 2

Omega Leader 20

Juke 2

Comm Relay 3

Omega Ace 20

Other option is take off Striden's pattern analyzer and Omega Leader's Comm Relay to up the basic squadron to a Zeta Leader with adaptability

Comm relay is a big part of what makes Omega Leader 'work'; If you're looking at removing it, I'd drop him to someone cheaper.

He can do okay with A Score To Settle, though, and that's a nice cheap build.

Kept the list the same as above, won a convincing victory. Opponent made a blunder with the Ghost's wingman which let me focus them down 1 at a time. Setting the Ghost's pilot skill to 0 (thanks Kylo!) on turn 2 secured the game. Big fan of the Omega Leader so will be keeping him as staple I think, was less convinced with Omega Ace but will try flying the list another couple of times. Definitely glad I kept the PA too, had to do a couple of reds.
