Next map in rotation?

By IamtheBendu, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

I expect any day now for the next map in rotation to drop. Which map do you think would add a lot of vesiality to the current rotation? I think the jawa or Palp would be lots of fun.

If we get the Palp map now, that'll mean we will have a 1/6 chance of playing Battle at Dawn at tourneys. And that will drastically change competitive list-making in the sense that you won't see so many lists completely optimized for Nal Hutta Swamps.

I haven't taken a good look at the new maps. What sets Palpatine's map apart from some of the others? Are there any scans of the new maps yet?

IIRC the beginning rounds have a blanket accuracy debuff, making sniping a far less viable strategy.

Both jawa and palp map would completely open up the list building. Both maps play well to melee players. The wide range of maps, i think, greatly increase the list diversity.

I won't miss Anchorhead Cantina. :P

I'd rather have anchorhead than nal hutta... :) can we rotate it out instead?

Based on previous rotations, and FFG's preference for sales over a diverse skirmish meta, I think the new map will include Coruscant tiles. Would love to see a map that favors melee units.

I could agree to that. LOL. I'm not a fan of that map either. I won't miss that one either, after the next next rotation. :P

Played the Dawn mission on Palp. I think it's a great scenario that really can allow for some aggressive play. It's also small enough melee characters can get into the fray.

this is what scares me actually. I'd love for Nal Hutta to rotate out by Worlds in May, but it may hang on since it would require players to have tiles (or maps) from Core, Jabba's Realm, and presumably HotE

Just thinking about bringing tiles to Worlds gives me anxiety. I'd spend the money buying the maps, but you can't even get them easily in Canada. It's literally the only part of IA that I hate.

Last year they made it sound like they would have many to purchase. When I got there, they said they were sold out and would have more printed in the next few days. The tournament started the next day. Argh!

They need to have assurances about maps if they're going to change the rotation right before Worlds.

I'm planning to make the trip up this year. I'd like to have the mats, but really can't justify the expense. hopefully my opponent will always have the mat, but i'll be practicing my puzzle skills anyway.

Building the map with tiles isn't something to make a big deal about. Here's what I recommend:

Take all of the tiles for the 3 maps in rotation and put them into a single plastic bag.

When you go to play, dump them all out and just assemble the map. It doesn't take more than 3 minutes or so depending on how familiar you are with the map.

Done, and you saved $75.

If one of the maps doesn't share any tiles with the others, you can make it even easier by splitting them up into separate bags. However, usually they share several tiles so it is just easier to group them all together.

You can also take your spiffy printed vinyl cheap maps and lay them out then put the tiles right on top :) tourney legal done!

I don't recall anybody using unofficial printed maps at worlds, I don't think there would be a problem if a few did, but who knows if judges would say something. If more and more players use unofficial maps, FFG may have a problem with that. But I hope FFG realizes that this is still a inconvenience to players and potential players.

I'm with DTDanix on puzzle crafting. The hardest time I had putting a map together is the first time, it gets much easier. I also bag every map separately, arrange the large pieces where they go, the smaller ones basically fill themselves in. There is some tile map overlap as I only buy one set, but it's not that hard to figure out. If you practice good mise en place for tournament play you'll be ready before your opponent figures out their set up.

I've heard of travelers, especially international, annoyed at the lack of maps even at the FFG Center, Jabba's was all sold out quickly. If anybody really can't get a hold of official maps for worlds in May, send me a message, I can offer to get together beforehand and I can purchase some for you elsewhere and bring them to you at the FFG Center.

Yup. This is my plan. $2 stencil, haha. Won’t take long to throw them together.

What I do is I have 4 bags. One bag for each map, and then a final bag where I put any tiles that are shared between any two maps. That way, I only ever need to have two bags out to build a puzzle.

Ummmm. I got nothin'. LOL. If it's good enough for the two-time world champ, it's good enough for me. I'll give it a try. :P

That's a good idea too. Funny as last year two of my games were against guys who didn't bring any maps or tiles! LOL. One guy won the initiative roll! I lectured him on how he would technically default, but also made it clear that I didn't come all the way there to NOT play IA. So we set up my tiles and he didn't offer much help. Sad thing is he beat me!

I did this for a while, but found I would forget which pieces were shared. So then I just threw them all together because it's just as easy.

Word on the street is that the street date for the FFG Mos Eisely Back Alley map is Feb 15th. @cleardave can you confirm this?

FFG Center recently posted that they'll have the map on the 15th (days before the FFG Regionals on the 17th) as well.

Yay! Right on time for all of my Regionals to be over :-/

Maybe next time, FFG, I don’t know, print them in advance? ?

To be fair we dont know if any printing or distribution issues have occured that may have slowed this down and so they went ahead and fed us a new map ahead of time because we were chomping at the bits for one. Also, all of the tiles are core box for this map so no one had to make any additional purchases to be tournament ready before the official nice maps rolles out besides the Jawa pack. I wonder if this also contributed to article delay. Or FFG is super focused on Legion. Who knows!
