You do not put Finn's die down before you roll. It's a modification and happens at the same time as other modifications. Since attacker modifies defender's dice first, Kestal will cancel dice before Finn adds his.

A lot of players put the blank dice down right away in order to not forget that it exists. They should not (technically) to avoid this kind of confusion.

The key here is Finn tells you to add a blank result to your roll, and adding results is a modification. The defender's defence dice modifications happen after any attacker modifications.

If it said to add a die, then that would be a complete die to be rolled with the rest before Lt Kestal triggers.

Lt Kestal triggers in 5.i, and can cancel any blank and focus results on the table at that stage.

Finn triggers in 5.ii, and adds a blank result which Lt Kestal cannot cancel.
