Magic Talents

I said that, but I am wondering if there is a good way to allow someone to become good at just one base spell at the expense of not being able to cast others well. The goal being to allow someone not magic focused to still take a singular magical ability. For example, a knight who can heal. Or a space marine who can create a barrier.

The Templar talent from the Alys Raine character sheet (gencon Pregen) gives a character access to divine magic but limits it to once per encounter.

Not exactly what you are saying but in the same vein

So, I've been typing up a reference document of talents for my players (sharing a single book makes character creation hard) and starting playing with the "Spellcasting Mastery" talent. Since I made a similar series of effects for melee, I decided to combine the two into one "talent". The biggest fear I had was not letting it stack with how spending Advantage already functions in the base game (gear especially), so I added the stipulation that they must suffer strain as well. It makes the wording jammed though.

Practiced

Tier : 2

Activation : Passive

Ranked : Yes

When your character purchases this talent, select one spell, attack, or similar effect that requires them to suffer strain and ^ to activate. Reduce the ^ needed to activate the effect by one, to a minimum of one. Each additional time your purchase this talent, select two additional effects.

I sort of want to make one that removes one Difficulty rank, but not sure on the tier, probably 3 or 4.
