Dice mod?

By Moktor, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Can a colorblind player legally sharpie/marker in the etching on standard dice to make his dice easier to differentiate?

Yes, here is the exact language from the X-Wing Tournament Regulations:

"Players may mark dice with a permanent or indelible marker to indicate ownership in an unobtrusive manner, but cannot otherwise alter them in any way."

It might also be worth noting that there are various official FFG dice from various major tournaments which are different colours from the core set. In particular, the white dice with coloured symbols might be useful, though they are expensive if you buy them on the open market. Swapping out just one die type with a different colour would help I assume.

If you contact FFG OP they might conceivably have some spares knocking around.

If you're only playing casually, there are also various third party sellers who sell differently coloured x wing dice, in particular one which sells a black die with coloured symbols. These don't cost anywhere near as much, but aren't tournament legal.

I appreciate it. I have a friend who would like a decent set for his colorblindness, but paying 60 bucks for a single die isn't going to happen. I figured if at least a simple coloring was legal it would help a little, though the dials are also a massive problem for him lol.

This might sound odd but for the dials have your friend try a piece of transparent red cellophane. We're getting into Christmas so it should be easy to find. It might even help with the dice.

The red cellophane should darken the green arrows and have little effect on the white. It probably will make the red arrows disappear, or it would for normal color sighted individuals. I don't know how it will be perceived by your friend.

He can also try green transparent cellophane. It should have a similar but reversed effect.

There are also some third party vendors that make unofficial dice and unofficial (acrylic) maneuver dials, these would be acceptable in casual play and - depending on the TO - acceptable for relaxed tier events. However, expect to have an issue with formal and premier level events - especially with the dice.

If explained respectfully I would imagine a rational TO would not have an issue with third party maneuver dials provided they are identical to the cardboard ones and whatever alternative color-sheme/iconography is used gets clearly explained. That being said, dice are dice - and if you use third party dice and do well you'll be accused of weighted dice.

Additionally, for the maneuver dials, your friend could use the FFG official dial covers (which show the whole maneuver set) and mark below each maneuver what color it is. Say "R" for red, "W" for white, and "G" for green so he doesn't have to rely on what color he thinks the little arrow is.

Couldn't you tell the difference by which dice have Hit/crit symbols and which dice have Evades? Or are you just meaning strictly from an ownership point of view?

He can, but it is tough to grab them quickly and he often grabs the wrong ones and tosses reds for evades, etc. I just figured if they had the etching colored in on one set it might make it a LITTLE easier. But honestly, FFG should be making a set for this, seeing as they already have approved (but very rare) sets for worlds and the like. While I realize it is a smallish group of people, it is common enough to be on a manufacturer's RADAR, lol. I will have to recommend the "silver pen" adjustments for his dials, that would likely help a lot since it would let him play most lists regularly.
