Trash Terrain Raxus Prime Scrapyard Table

By Omnustechni, in Star Wars: Legion

Happy Saturday to all of you eagerly awaiting the release of Star Wars Legion.

To wile away some of my wait, I have constructed some extremely cheap fun and simple terrain to use when Legion comes out. An alternate title for this table could also be wino terrain. I basically took some glue, cardboard, old sprues from my 40k miniatures, some little bits of Styrofoam I had lying around, some empty K-cups from my Keurig, and the trays that wine bottles are shipped in to make a plethora of terrain pieces that cost me less than 15 USD so far and that was mostly just on glue. They also didn't take any fancy tools. All I used was a pair of scissors, a ruler, a box cutter knife, and one of my sprue cutters to cut the sprues. These are still a work in progress. Next steps for me are painting to get those corroded metal and rust colors you see on Raxus Prime and adding more Star Warsy symbols etc to drive home that this comes from a Galaxy Far Far Away. I've also thought about trying to find some models or old action figures of Star Wars ships to tear up and put in with these other terrain pieces, but that would be where cost starts to grow. Without further ado. Let us begin.

These are the wine bottle trays that I used to make the bulk of what you see.

I decided to use these as a starting point because there are a lot of interesting shapes in this from the squares, rectangles, and rounded pieces. I also like the color and texture. It reminded me of the grayish brown metal in the Raxus Prime map in Star Wars the Force Unleashed. Basically I took these trays, cut them up, and glued them to pieces of cardboard and Styrofoam to make the pieces below.

I started with these little barricades. I put rectangular pieces of foam down on pieces of cardboard and just stabbed sprues into them and covered them in pieces of the wine trays. I used a Tau Fire Warrior for reference to judge the size for them. They make a nice little squad-sized hiding place when put together.

I was able to find a few cheap Star Wars miniatures for the rest of these pieces. I took the basic idea from these smaller barricades and built a large panel with some barricades around it as a center pieces for the table.

I wanted to build something that could act as a bridge if I decided to make a chunk of the map impassable so I built this bridge out of a couple cardboard panels, K-cups and some of the shapes out of those trays.

And as an added bonus it's tall enough for miniatures to go underneath it as well.

Here's a close up of the big wall of junk barricade in the background of the first picture:

And last but not least, here are some bird's eye views of the table as a whole:

Sorry for the long post, but it's mostly pictures. I hope you enjoyed them. I had fun making them for sure and I'll definitely keep making more in the future. Any suggestions, constructive criticisms, or ideas to expand on it are very welcome. Enjoy your weekend and may the Force be with you all.

This is fantastic. Looks like a brilliant way into making a themed table on a low budget as well!

Cant wait to to see it painted!

Awesome, it really does look like Raxus Prime.

Got some new pics to share! My wife was awesome enough to buy me one of the Bandai T-47 Snowspeeder models for my birthday. I thought it would be a perfect piece to make some terrain out of. I assembled it basically by the book and just took a few pieces off to make it look damaged. After that I hit it with a simple brown wash for some grunge, because no rebel ship is all that clean.

Next I hit it with a black wash to just pick up a few more details and highlight some of the parts that would have some smoke and oil stains and the like.

After that I added some battle damage. Basically I just took my power drill and cut into the glass canopy and made some small holes to simulate some bullet hole pock marks and painted them with a splash of black paint.

Next I drilled one more big hole in the nose and impaled the speeder on a sprue before attaching it to some foam to pose it.

And this is how it ended up looking after adding a few more bit and pieces around the model.

I have to say I really enjoyed making this piece. The Bandai model kits are really easy to assemble. All you need is some cutters and a file. All the pieces snap together easily as long as you clean up the edges from the sprues a little with a file. I hope you like the piece and enjoy the pictures.

Have a great Wednesday and may the Force be with you!

Nice work on that speeder man

So I've finally started moving out of the building phase on my Raxus Prime table and moved into the painting phase. Since Raxus Prime is basically a giant ball of rusty metal, I decided I needed to bring down that gray with a little red, orange and brown.

I also decided it would be fun to have some dirt pieces so the whole table wouldn't just be a single texture from all of those scraps of cardboard piled up on top of each other so I made a few of these guys.

My goal is to ultimately paint up all of those gray and tan pieces to look like this. Before too much longer, I'll have enough of these little cardboard tiles to cover my entire table. Once it's all painted up, I think it's going to look really good.

I also got one more Bandai model kit I'm going to work in as a coupe of terrain pieces as well.

Rather than just building the kit and making terrain out of it, I decided I would do one piece out of the head and another out of the legs. I'm not quite sure how I want to paint them just yet. I had the idea of trying to make the legs look older and more rusted out and bury them a little bit in debris so that it kind of looks like there ATST wrecks on the table, but I'm not 100% sure on how to do that just yet.

With the release date supposedly getting closer and closer, I'm just hoping I can get everything I want to do on this terrain done in time to start working on the models. I'm afraid that once the game comes out, I won't be as interested in working on all of this stuff.

Thanks for indulging my creativity once again. Have a wonderful day!

More pics ahoy. I've done a little more work on the T-47 and one of my center pieces for the table. I'm really liking the way they look now.

I finally painted up the surrounding area on the speeder. I painted the area behind it black a bit to make it look like it scraped across the ground and maybe had some fire and smoke scorch up the area behind it.

The rest of the pics for today are from the center piece for the table. I got it all painted up and added a few odds and ends to keep it from being just one flat texture. I think it looks awesome. I even tossed in an old miniature to use as a body draped over one of the barricades.

It took me most of today to get these two done. Basically made the barrels out of drink lids and most of those little pipes out of bendy straws from the dollar store. The little antenna looking doodad was one of the gun pieces from ATST model kit. I thought it would be hard to keep it on the model itself so I thought it would make a nice little decoration on this piece instead. The rest of the little plastic bits came from the leftovers from the ATST and T-47 kits.

I can't wait until this game comes out. I also can't wait to put all of these pieces together. They look cool separately, but I think once they're all together and painted, they will make for a really great board.

As always, I hope you have a wonderful day and that you enjoyed the pics! May the Force be with you all!
