Gear Prices

By c__beck, in Genesys

I know I brought this up on the subreddit, but I figured I'd start a discussion here, as well, to get the most brainpower I can on the topic.

Has anyone else noticed that the gear prices in the example settings don't match up with the prices given in the Create an Item section?

For example, in the fantasy genre, the axe is +3 damage, crit 3 with vicious 1 for a measly 150 currency. However, if we break that down with the suggested prices on pages 199–201, we get the following:

Damage +3: 250
Crit 3: 150
Vicious: 100

That's a total of 500. The entire allotment of a starting character's money! The suggested price is 30% of the "actual" price.

What about the "simple" spear? For 90 currency, you get Damage +2, crit 4, accurate 1 and defensive 1.

Damage +2: 100
Crit 4: 50
Accurate 1: 50
Defensive 1: 50

That's only 250…half that of the axe, but still. No where near the suggested price of 90. It's listed at 36% cheaper then the maths suggests.

I haven't done the maths on too many other settings, but modern day is up next, given as how I'm going to be starting work on my Stargate: Genesys conversion.

I honestly wouldn't worry too much about the price differences. Genesys being the toolkit that it is, assumes that you the GM, will set the prices accordingly. I think the examples are just there to provide an idea for what their cost might be in the setting they would be featured in.

I'm not too fond of the static prices that they set for weapons and armor, especially the odd price progression with armor... So instead of their rules, i'm going to use the framework Genesys has provided and build a system based on price multiples. It'll be a bit more mathematically intensive, but should provide a more rounded and balanced (imho) approach to gear. Other than that, I am more excited for this game than I have been for any other system in a looooonnnngggg time...

As a GM who can't price his way out of a grocery store, I need pricing advice from the game. Just handwaving it doesn't work for me, hence this thread.

I plan on just reflavoring gear from Star wars.

I don't have my books yet so I may be missing something, but you always say that you get a discount for standard weapons types but if you build special weapons then it costs more. Or you could Reprice everything based on then guidelines.

There is no listed discount for "standard" items. It just says to " …use the values as a baseline, but don't be afraid to change [it]. "

You know it just kind of hit me you can easily make "typical" magical weapons in this game, say like a +1 sword. It's just a sword that gives an automatic success result, which counts for to-hit and for damage in this game. Eaaasssyyyyy.

Right. You can assume a discount for listed items if you want.

I have no issues with your choice, and think it's a good call for the environment. However. This IS the internet, and the internet is about memes now. Used to exist solely for porn, but now - all memes. So here goes:

Anyway, didn't you answer your own question, in that the prices for creating an item are suggested? Just apply 30% discount to the suggested costs going forward?
