First time painting plastic spaceships

By Visovics, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

So I've finally managed some time to dedicate to paint one of my ships. As I never painted ships before I thought best to test first on my Vic before doing on the ISD.

Here it is with the black and first layer of red edges and details

Still some small things to be corrected and some more layers for a more strong colour before the wash

Ok, for some reason pics vanish when I click the edit post button, any efficient ways to do this?

You can try uploading them to https://postimages.org/ , then copying the direct path URL into you post. Once it's there, the image should automatically replace the link.

Thanks! Will fix them to individuals later

Edit: IMAGES UP!

Now engines, second layer of red, and how it should look once I manage the symbol

Very very good!!

Getting a grey and dry brushing the whole model when you are finished will make the details pop. That said, it looks great at this stage and i love the logo amd location you have picked for it.

Just make sure the brush is very dry and you use very very small amounts of paint when you drybrush. You can test on a peice of cardboard before you do the ship, you dont want to see any streaks of paint of your brush.

Where did you get the symbol? I'm wanting to do something similar with my ISDs either with the Imp crest or the Krayt skull.

Printed an image of the internet, cut and then ended up painting it red to see how it would fit.

They look very good, the symbol looks awsome......

Very nice! Are you doing a stencil on the symbol, decals, or free hand?

Thanks, I still need to find time to paint the symbol, this is just what I was going to use as a benchmark to painting it

I was going to do it decal, but I don’t have anything I can use to, and then a stencil went horribly wrong, so it’ll have to be in free hand, hoping it stays close to normal!

Do you know any one weth a cricut 2? My girlfreind has one, and apparently you can take images and make cut outs of them. It can make some real excellant stencils.

I’ll look into it, thanks :D

My quickly improvised method was to take a measurement of the radius I wanted, zoom a picture on my laptop to the appriopriate size, trace it on a piece of paper against the screen and then cut it out with a hobby knife. It's not perfect, so I had to do a bit of touching up, but still way easier than freehanding on anything bigger than an Arquitens in my opinion.

I just realised your logo is in inverse colours compared to mine though, so yours is harder to make a stencil for. Maybe make one just for the pointy middle bit and freehand the little curves going around?

Even if you don't want to do a full stencil, I'd strongly recommend using one just for the outer circle and centre point so it doesn't get all wonky. Good luck, I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

I look at those printers at Michael's all the time but can't talk myself into getting one. You can do some cool s*** with those.
