In some ways I am incredibly intelligent, in others I am an absolute moron. Unless you add any form of perspective or focus to it, the idea of intelligence level is completely subjective.

Gaaah.

Edit. Looked up Dunning Kruger. They studied specificslly cognitive ability and logic. This is a very distinct strand of intelligence and thus makes sense.

Disappointed in Verg in whom I expect better consideration of word choice!

this plus IQ tests being SUPER racist and gender biased.

As a top tip, hoping that more people will play Armada is probably countered by calling x-wing players stupid.

in my experience IQ and board game ability are not reliably linked in any way.

Ben's IQ is so high that he rolls better.

#ClassicBen

My initial forays into research is putting me at about $1k before food, con + tournament entry, and accommodation.

Will have to run a GoFundMe to get my Tray business running after all the mess of the past few months, and see how things pan out,

I kind of like the idea of persistent people learning a thing or two about tactics and strategy from the current player base regardless of IQ, tbh. Not saying the amount of idiots in the world doesn’t bug me too, but frankly, this feels a little divisive.

I have no problem with this, I am not saying I reject those that actually commit and try. The ones committed do eventually pick it up, but there are those that you just know they are wasting your time and you theirs.

This is the FFG forums, not a dissertation!

The comic point should be clear, and fits with the previous posts: even if we allow each person to define intelligence in any old way that suits them, that logically speaking, some large percentage of people has an overly inflated opinion of themselves.

And a good extremely personal illustration of this effect for me ties directly into the generation of the Classic Ben meme, which we've now got in the present thread as well. The opponent I had who launched the rant did not merely have an inflated opinion of himself but a decidedly bombastically inflated opinion of himself. As a result, his only conclusions for his losses were: 1. the game is broken, and thus the vast majority of the posts on the forums about fixing the game. and 2. My opponents must be cheating. The small snippet of behavior everyone saw a year ago here was part of a larger pattern that went back at least into X-wing. Now, I'm all about Jabbawookie's idea of persistent people learning a thing or two, and I think strategy games have an enormous amount to teach everyone. A bit of humility is intrinsic to the ability to learn, and in strategy games, I find that losing one's sense of humility is also the point at which one finds oneself committing errors on the game board.

I also know Brik in person, and I cannot think of a person that I've ever met in any game who was more committed to building a community and encouraging people to play Armada. Nor have I met a person who does as well for introducing a very wide range of players of different abilities to the game and patiently teaches them. Any random post can be taken in a lot of different ways, and I do think the community should get that the post is addressing a specific kind of arrogance that one encounters, albeit, infrequently, but nevertheless encounters.

Thought this WASN'T a dissertation....

?

Wasn't Nationals supposed to get shuffled around this year? It's at the weird time after Worlds and before Regionals. Wouldn't it make sense to go SC>Regionals>Nationals/NA>Worlds? Or is that change next year?

I also know I'm smart because I took a Buzzfeed quiz and got all the questions right making me a savant.

I thought nationals was intended to be shuffled around as well. I know a lot of West Coasters were hoping it would come there way (and give me an excuse to travel further West than Central Time for once in my life.

Right now things go as follows: (I am putting 2017 Regionals as 2018 because most of the Regionals are in 2018, so it feels like FY2018 to me. Also if this is 2017 Regionals, and 2016 Regionals happened early, what does that make the ones from Nov 2016-Feb 2017?)

Regionals > Worlds > Store / NA Championship / Store > US Nationals - I have no clue when non-US Nationals or the EU Championship takes place.

Each cycle of byes is now really screwed up.

See, I absolutely agree with this post. 100%. :) It’s worth noting, though, that arrogance and persistence are both personality traits that can make people anywhere on the spectrum awesome or complete jerks. If someone has a genius level IQ, it’s not going to change the fact that eventually they will lose, and they probably won’t be as used to losing. If anything, I think these behaviors manifest at the extreme ends of the spectrum, not just the bottom. I get that you’re describing a player type that’s genuinely unpleasant to be around. What I don’t see is the connection to IQ. I honestly think the Dunning Kruger effect can be traced, in some part, to culture. (There’s been a little experimentation on this, with some supporting evidence. In America, a lack of knowledge is a weakness, to be compensated for with an inflated ego. In Japan, (supposedly) it’s viewed as a chance for personal improvement. Which might be why people taking the study there tended to be fairly accurate with regards to performance.)

I'm OK with US Nat's being on the east coast as long as it's because all the games are represented and that's the largest concentration of gamers for them. Players outside of X-Wing are relatively limited here on the west coast, at least for the moment (but I have a suspicion that will change once Legion is released). Even X-Wing players initially didn't have a typical Regional between LA and Washington without traveling almost to Nevada.

The best West Coast location for everyone is one that I'm glad they have not done yet: Las Vegas. Vegas is cheap, cheap, cheeeeeap to do a gaming con for, but if you don't want to hit casinos it can be difficult to do much else. Also, frankly, I'm not sure how much of an FFG games presence there is in Vegas. I'm sure they can muster some X-Wing players, but my understanding is that aside from the super-popular options there aren't a lot of gamers there due to the slow economy.

I really wasn’t trying to turn anything j to an intellectual conversation, this thst very short early post that had more the effect of a bunch of dudes sitting in a bar shooting the breeze feel than anything else.

sure, ala ginkapo, intelligence is enormously complicated. Sure, ala this post, cultural factors are going to affect how people respond.

im not sure I made any specific attempt to bring IQ into other than to note there is a large and pervasive tendency for nearly everyone to overestimate their abilities. Most of the time, this is inconsequential. Sometimes it leads to other poor behavior. And I think the other poor behavior was the context that got us into the discussion.

I know I waste your time, but you enjoy the baby seal clubbing that comes from it

As a person FROM Vegas, born and raised, I can tell you there is a decent bit to do. Even if you don't want to gamble, there are a lot of shows and attractions to see. Just walking the Strip can be fun if you've never done it before. Plus within about a 45 minute drive in any direction are great natural attractions to see (Red Rock, Mt. Charleston, Lake Mead, etc).

That all being said, I would NEVER live there again. The culture of that place is terrible for the soul.

I'd not mind seeing a bit tournament held there. There are already a couple of gaming conventions there each year, though I believe only one of them is even middlin' in size. There's a decent, though not necessarily large, FFG community there.

I had a blast this year! This time I'm going to plan time off in advance, and hopefully be in better shape to explore the capitol afterwards.

Air and space museum ftw. They have a flight sim.

Also there are a ton of great places to eat in dc.

I think I just got caught off guard by the wait (and frankly my own weight) looking through the museum. When I wnt three in three middle of a train storm it was completely packed.
