Missile scum or ace imperials?

By Feanor79, in X-Wing Squad Lists

We have event 4 of a local store tournament on Sunday and having a difficult time choosing a list (the Dash/Chewy list I was going to fly turned out to not be great). I have gone 1 and 2 in each previous event getting my second loss by usually only one hull point. I am aiming for 2 and 1. The meta here includes 3 wookies, some nym lists, fair ship rebels (still) and likely some missiles. There is a hard PS race as well. I am well familiar with the Imperial ships, but have flown the scum K fighters a few times. These lists can be tweeked or completely slaughtered. I tend to be more of a jouster/arc dodger than a kiter.

List one (Imperial Aces)

Inquisitor (32 total) - VI, Proton Rockets, autothrusters, title

Backdraft (35 total) - adaptability, harpoon missiles, FCS, LWF, title

Colonel Vessery (33 total) - A score to settle, TIE/x7

List two (missile carriers)

Talonbane Cobra - Preditor, harpoon missiles, GC, pulsed ray shields, Vaksai, Ion Dischargers

Viktor Hel - VI, harpoon missiles, GC, Vectored thrusters, Vaksai, Scavenger Crane

Fenn Rau - PTL, AT, concord dawn protectorate.

I'm not sure which list is 'better', but I think both can be 'improved' for competitive play:

Imperial:

Quickdraw w/ VI, title, FCS, chips & harpoon = 36

Vessery w/ ASTS & X7 = 33

Inqy w/ PTL, title & thrusters = 31

100

Why better? PS 11 harpoon. Inquisitor with PTL is far superior to VI in terms of consistent firepower and survivability. Keeping ships on the table wins games. The only drawback is no LWF on quickdraw, but if you want harpoon on /sf, you kinda need chips...

Scum:

Talonbane: mindlink, vaksai, harpoon, glitter, engine, thrusters & chips = 36

Viktor: VI, vaksai, harpoon, crane, stealth device & chips = 31

Fenn: mindlink, title & thrusters = 32

99

Why better? Much more efficient action economy. Same offensive potential. More durability (autothrusters on Talonbane makes r3 engagement safer and its easier to dive into range 1). And even a little control (because of stealth on Viktor----its an auto-include on him in conjunction with scavenger crane).

Don't fill Viktor's last mod slot. A PS bid is good for this squad, even though its tiny (better than nothing!)

Both have great potential, but I'm also gonna offer some thoughts for improvements:

Inquisitor: PTL, AT, Title

Ryad: PTL, X7

Quickdraw: A Score to Settle, Title, LWF, FCS, Primed Thrusters

Solid, hard to take down ships, with reliable mods. I think Inky is the weak link, but he's so cheap for what you get he's probably worth it. However, if you dropped him for Omega Leader w/ Juke/Comm relay, you'd have room for Expertise on Quickdraw, and maybe PA, which is super strong.

For your second list, Fenn is, of course, perfect.

Predator really isn't worth is on Talonbane, especially because you don't need to spend your lock to fire Harpoons. I would include PTL on him. Leave GC, add VT and EU, makes for crazy maneuverability. Scavenger Crane would allow you to get those Harpoons back.

I don't think Victor is worth his investment. If you want another missile carrier, I would use Jostero. Sure, he's low PS, but with title, Expertise, Harpoons, GC, Scavenger Crane, others to flavour, he can really shine when so many harpoons are being thrown to proc his ability.

That being said, you could have more procs for his ability by downgrading Fenn to a Vaksai Black Sun Ace w/ Deadeye, GC, Harpoons, Scavenger Crane. That depends if you want to double down on Jostero/missiles, or if you want Fenn for his versatility.

You can follow the advice of the others and make less of a missile list. Or you can go the other way and go full alpha strike, nuking away whatever your opponent values most:

Inquisitor (31 total) - VI, Harpoon, Title, Chips

Quickdraw (34 total) - VI, Harpoon, Title, Collision Detector, Chips

Vader (35 total) - VI, Harpoon, Title, ATC, Chips

One option is to lower Vader and QD to PS10 with adaptability. That makes the flying a bit easier and either gives you points for a bid, or to add FCS or Pattern Analyzer to make QD better. Soon you could go with AdvancedOptics, too, giving you two TL+Focus+Chips missiles instead of just one - that's a whooping 97.8% chance to throw 4 hits!

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up flying:
Quickdraw: expertise, LWF, FCS, title, harpoons

Colonel Vessery: tie/x7, ASTS

Deathfire: EM, harpoons, proxy mines, LRS

I went 2 and 1. The first match was against PS10 rebel aces (kind of). Nym, Lt Blount, Ten Numb all with harpoons all at PS10. The first engagement saw me lose Quickdraw. Took out the B-wing and bombed the z95. Came down to Nym vs one shield vessery. Almost won, but lost to the autoblaster/accuracy corrector. Second game against three wookies won easily. Took out Lohrick first, lost vessery then mop up work. Third game was against a Deci and aggressor. Lanced and did 12 damage with first engagement and splash damage onto agressor. Won with two rounds of shooting. Game was super quick and not too fun. Harpoons seem very powerful (maybe too powerful) and not that fun. Thanks again!
