Focus Action with Magic Carpet Ride/Quadzituck in Regionals

By s1ickrick, in X-Wing Squad Lists

The only time you would ever use Focus instead of Reinforce is when the enemy has no shot on you. Correct? Is there any other situation that Focus would be the better option?

Once the enemy goes for 1 tuck and its hurting, you can focus with others to try and spread enemy fire or else your tucks get big boost in damage. Just have to know when to focus. You dont want a tuck to focus and then be caught in arc of three enemy ships.

Its situation dependant to me. If you think that the enemy ships won't have arc, or at least not many with arc then you can think about focus.

Its also list dependant. With my Rey and Lowhhrick list I reinforce until i have an enemy ship or two down, or if they kill Rey and I need to try and get hits. Reinforce isnt gonna do much for me to get hits when i need it, but its nice in the beginning if they target Low over Rey.

In a regional tournament environment would it be better to just stay alive if I have the MOV or go for the kills? I never played in one before and I am curious if having the small MOV is the safer play and letting time run out.

A win is a win; your record trumps all other considerations for ranking. That said, if you have a low MOV for your record, you might miss the cut. In a six-round main event, for example, going 6-0 or 5-1 is usually safe; but only one or two players at 4-2 might make it; in that case, you need excellent MOV to advance.

In your case, you need to keep an eye on the time, and where you are in the points. If you're winning by a one-ship margin, but there's a lot of time left on the clock, it might be better to play more aggressively, and try to pad your lead, lest your opponent whittle you down in the meantime. On the contrary, if time is running low in the round, "Turtle-ing" is a valid strategy (the emphasis here, of course, is on relying upon your stout defenses, rather than slow playing) that may preserve a win even with low MOV.
