X-Men setting

By GroggyGolem, in Genesys

So I'm looking at putting together a modern-day, superhero setting that exists in a version of the X-Men universe. From all the information I have gathered, running a supers game for X-Men would fit since they aren't all godlike beings (save for a few, who are usually the antagonists).

I figure the super characteristics with the exploding dice, unique talents and the magic system can work together to create mutants with varying abilities. Maybe a player could choose extra powers at character generation but start with less xp or something to balance it out. Over the course of play some player characters might "evolve" into secondary mutations or their initial powers might fully develop into more potent effects. Alternate species/archetypes can work for the more physically mutated individuals, such as the Morlocks that live in the sewers.

As far as the setting goes, I would probably start a group off as teens who've just unlocked their abilities and some way or another, made their way to "Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters" and begin their training as X-Men. Eventually, when the players are high enough in skill and their characters are "older", I would consider using the supers rule where minions only deal 1 point of wounds or strain because the threats become more serious than a police officer telling you to get on the ground or a mob of citizens and at that point a character would have a better level of control over their gifts.

Continuity basically won't matter since nothing is consistent in the Marvel comic universe & the great thing is this could just be another alternate universe/timeline. I'd plan to have the classic X-Men team around for a little bit but much in the same way as "The Gifted" tv series, they have disappeared or maybe they just deal with the bigger, global threats while the PC's deal with domestic issues.

Your thoughts are much appreciated.

For this idea, watch"the gifted" it is in the marvel world and the mutant underground running from the sentinel division. Should give you great ideas there...

I actually mentioned it in my post! I've only seen a couple episodes of it but it was pretty good. Do you have any particular thoughts on the game mechanic ideas or opinions on how to get that X-Men feel in the setting?

I'd personally make a separate mutation Talent tree for their power. Then they could have an open one for however else they want to develop their characters.

The setting just needs the names, places, and faces for the feel.

I would start off slow as the characters are realizing they have this new power(s) and very little powerful villians at the start maybe one that works in the background until your characters can take care of them selves

.

So my initial idea has altered. I plan to run the game set in the version of the x-men universe from the 1990's western animation cartoon.

It will be centrally focused on the X-Men and that dynamic of the marvel universe but I'd love to have the group come in as newly discovered mutants set just after the final season of the cartoon. With that, it's technically part of a shared universe since the cartoons did shared universes before it was cool. :D

As I understand it, the "X-Men '92" book that was part of the recent Secret Wars crossover event was an unofficial sequel to the X-Men Animated Series. I haven't read it myself, not having kept up with Marvel in a while, but that might have some sources for inspiration?

Well now I not only have the entire series to rewatch, I've got a comic to read too. XD

That would be pretty cool. Always looking forward to new settings.

And off-topic, I read it as X-COM for one second.

I think it's only like 5 issues or so, if that helps. And I'm also told that Jay and Miles (of Xplain the X-Men fame) have a cameo in it, which is neat.

10 issues and i accidentally skipped to issue 10 and read most of it. whoops.

It doesn't seem to continue the cartoon but the comics from that same time period. The cartoon ended with Xavier being whisked away into space or something like that.

There are apparently two X-Men '92s: one four-issue series from Secret Wars, and one ten-issue series because the first one was highly successful. The way they explained it on the XPlain the X-Men podcast (only about the first one), it's not officially a sequel to the TV show because of rights stuff, but it heavily references it and has things like all the X-Men's major foes having been defeated in the last four years (because that's how many seasons the show lasted).

But since I have neither seen the TV show nor read the comic, I can't really say anything beyond that. Except that X-Plain the X-Men is an awesome podcast, and if you're into X-Men you should listen to it.

I think I'll check that out too, thanks!
