How many 40K players will defect?

By chriscook, in Star Wars: Legion

IMO the lore is the ONLY reason to get into 40K (i love me some 40K setting, no question), but i know what you mean.

GW is getting better at reaching out to the community. Its actually been a huge turnaround for them. I love 40k, 8th is good but honestly i only play because i also like assembling and painting minis and it has a solid group in my area. The group i typically play with all play xwing and armada as well.. i foresee quite a few of us just dumping 40k.. especially me unless plastic sisters of battle come out soon... im getting sick of waiting lol

The only thing worse than waiting for my x wing fix is waiting for plastic sisters. Neither is ever going to happen, but it feels good to think they’re coming.

I tend to prefer Necromunda over regular 40k, it's less daunting, less to paint and it's a more tight and skirmish like setting. 40k tends to get a bit large scale for me, with Necromunda I can paint up 10-20 gangers and you're pretty much done. GW is improving though, over time. I'm not quitting GW entirely for Legion but I prefer the larger scale ruleset Legion uses which is a bit more fluid and easier to understand. I will probably stick to GWs more small scale and niche games though such as Shadespire and Necromunda.

I'm not. Been playing 40K since the early/mid '90's. I got Imperial Assault to play SW as something else when it came out since my local group had kinda had it with 40K at that point. We were going back and forth with IA and X-wing at the time. We did the core campaign, the Twin Suns mini and up to the last 2 missions of the Hoth campaign then 8th edition came out. 2 missions to go and the group just lost interest in IA. I tried for over a month to finish it. I stoped trying and didn't touch IA again until the app came out and then just did a couple mission but not with the group. Haven't even gotten the HotE and singles from that wave.

Not sure why Legions exists as a seperate game from IA. I've not been reading anything about because I don't care. Think I'll keep to X-wing from FFG at this point. I got into the 40K LCG. Burned. SW LCG. Burned. IA now burned.

Honestly, all of my friends are playing 40k right now and I was hoping to proxy Legion models for 40k and also get them to try out Legion mechanics. However, with the recently announced 2 month delay, I am sick of waiting to play with my friends and so I bought a used 40k army instead. FFG really shot themselves in the foot by dragging out delivery so long and I think the momentum 40k has been building lately with all of the new units and rules will seriously hurt Legion's sales.

Not sure what army you bought but if it isnt space marines get ready to wait for updates and new units.. lol

I honestly don't think they have done any non power armor models since the 8th starter dropped in like...last july. There is apparently a Necron cyptek or something coming out soon. But that is 1 new models for a codex. Whereas DG/Primaris/Custodes got full blown releases. Hopefully the rest of the year they dial it down with the friggin marines.

Ive just begun the finishing parts of my IG army so if they start releasing new models for it now im gonna blow a vein

I really wanted to do DKOK but even using cheap-ish alternative models for kitbashing the costs went through the roof...So mobile infan...errh... cadians it is. Would be just my luck to see GW start releasing DKOK now...Man now im getting nervous.....

Just do stormtrooper IG you will feel better

GW doing DKOK is about as likely as them doing sisters of battle, I think you can rest easy. If anything they could do steel legion, but who knows.

The DKOK line on forgeworld is just jaw dropping gorgeous. Super expensive though.. sob need a reboot so bad lol. The minis are literally like 20+ years old..

We can also rest easy knowing that rebels and empire in legion will be heavily supported ha! Also i can use my empire troops as.. imperial guard!

I like to think, that since the games are similar in scale, that the games can overlap. I've dropped lots of cash and spent a lot of time building up a bunch of boyz for my Ork army and I'm not just dropping them because of new toys. What really is nice is that while I might have more miniatures (and I love miniatures. Seriously, I have like 30 miniatures sitting next to my airbrush station ready to be primed for my Frostgrave games), this will push me to make more terrain and boards for both games. Star Wars terrain and dioramas seem exciting to really make because of how larger than life the worlds are. It's not just trees for Endor, they're gigantic oversized trees. Even barren places like Hoth and Tatooine are really interesting because of the set designs in the original trilogy, which are great inspirations (not to mention I still have a bunch of WEG books sitting around).

Anyway, I rambled on that because it might open up more boards for 40k. Legion might not sell more miniatures for 40k, but it might help the hobby just in general. Bring in more hobby heroes and those straddling the fence. All boats rise and all that.

I kind of wish 40k 8th hadn't been so good... It pretty much killed all other games around here, I can't even get an X-Wing game at the club. Before it there were people who played Blood Bowl, 9th age, AoS, X-Wing and Infinity, now it is 40k or nothing. A real shame, because I don't intend to buy a 40k army (love the setting and models, but can't decide on one faction), it is just too much of an investment for something I could only ever be half satisfied with.

This also made me cautious on Legion, I'll probably not be getting it after all (at least not any time soon).

Well, I don't think there will be many "defections" by current players. BUT there are a lot of people out there, including myself, that stopped playing 40K some time ago. GWs constant rulechanges, the imballance of the codices, the price-policy, all that drove lots of people out of 40K, that are still interested and/ or active in wargaming. And I think a lot of the ex-40K players - many of them fans of Star Wars for sure - will pick up Legion.

This will by far not be my only system. I play a lot of historical and fantasy/ sci-fi and pulp stuff (Infinity, Frostgrave, BA, Pulp Alley and many more). But as this is the first real Star Wars wargame in many years, I will at least try it out. And even if I happen to not like the system, I'm sure I will still buy a lot of the minis, as you can easily use them in other generic sci-fi systems.
