In Buffalo 40K is very popular. We are just hoping we can get a few into legion. We tried with Armada, had about 5 players. Hope we can triple that. I look foward to the day when we got 16 players (or more) showing up for tournyes. Come on Buffalo, make Star Wars gaming proud!!
How many 40K players will defect?
Probably not all that many. More so disaffected former 40k players.
Very few. 8th is proving quite popular so far.
More to the the point, a lot of people have a LOT of money sunk into 40k. And i mean...a lot. And on top of that quite a few have a lot of time and emotional investment in their collections too. Most won't want to give that up.
And of course there's the fact that 40K has a giant pre-established community, decades of extra armies and development, and so on.
There should be no illusions that this will do any real damage to 40K. Its more likely that some 40K players will also play Legion as a smaller side game.
Edited by ExtropiaWhile I think total "sell my stuff" defection isn't gonna happen with many, I think a decent amount will take a break from 40 for some legion "heresy" especially if the rules are good and minis $:Army ratio isn't bad.
I think it will all come down to critical mass. If enough people are playing Legion and the community is healthy and fun to be around, you'll get defections. The SW license is too strong to ignore and Legion will be a cheaper and with better game play.
I think your going to see a bunch do a dual system for a while. Legion is cheap enough to support that.

Especially since many 40k players have multiple armies anyway

At this stage even an OTT amount of legion is cheap compared to 40k table ready army.
All you need to do is actually convince them they really don't need multiple trooper packs to form a full strength unit
.
As for defections, if it's as easy to build as they are claiming you'll pull the players that don't like to model, but possibly discourage the modellers that like to game.
Edited by RalgonMy guess would be not too many. The 40K players I know are all hard core, multiple armies and several thousand dollars deep. They are at the point they don't even care to have any other games to try out. They don't play any of the Star Wars games currently out and they are all fans of the IP.
You'll get some of the players that consider themselves to be gamers instead 40K or AoS players.
it's less about defection and more about what will win in the competition for people's time.
edit:
what I mean is someone who owns multiple 40k armies and wants to try legion will likely just own both and enjoy both.
Edited by TylerTTI was going to get back into 40K with 8th edition, but with the announcement of Legion I held off for this.
I think it was better all around.
Why do we have to defect? Why not play both? Legion is still using smaller numbers of figs at a cheaper cost than 40k even when you start bumping up point values. I fully intend to have full Imperial army in addition to my two very large Bolt Action armies and 5 40k/30k armies. My group I mainly play with will be doing something similar. I imagine everyone in my group will pick up at least one faction and another dude who trades terrain for minis will have large both factions.
Edited by Col. DashBoth is certainly the more likely and sensible route for many players.
Two point three three three repeating. ![]()
I'll certainly be switching over if Denver CO has a nice playerbase in the future.
I’ve talked to several 40K players on if they would like to play Legion. Most seem to think it would be fun and they do have a interest.
But I feel most of them don’t see why they would jump to it.
I think that to be successful in my area, Legion needs to do some things:
First, get launched. It’s all fun to build hype but until it gets in the wild and people can see games happening, its hard make commitments.
Second, show that people are going to play it. Getting forces, getting them painted, and most importantly playing them should help with this.
Third, Support from FFG. I Getting the game into organized play, Store Championships, Regionals, Nationals, and Worlds, and the competitive side all getting showed off should be the main push.
****, I sold up IN PREPARATION for this game. Once it drops, I think a lot of people will defect from a lot of systems to play this game. 1) its star wars, literally the biggest sci fi/fantasy franchise known to man and 2) based on the quality of games FFG has been producing, their phenomenal customer service team and the love and support (read EXPANSIONS!) they pour into every game, this looks to me to be the smash hit of next year and probably many years to come.
After clearing out my Sisters, Eldar and Guard I managed to raise £2,000 through eBay. Don't be afraid 40k defectors, you can get a decent return on your minis if you hold out for the right prices. The Mrs may have gobbled up all that money for the 'wedding fund' (read - shoes), but I now have free licence to purchase whatever the **** I want for this game when it drops. Does anyone else think four core sets might be obsessive?
EDIT: Really, I can't say the H word? I can say Lucifer's Domain, the land of Eternal Damnation, the underworld, the Otherworld and Haydes but I can't say the H word. Madness

I've noticed this, it's bizarre. It's not like it's a swear word, seems really odd!
I don't think you'll see many defections. People playing both, yes, but I don't see people moving over exclusively.
8th edition 40k has proven quite popular, which has revitalised the game a bit locally. Also, as others have said, games need critical mass before they get adopted and if Legion is too slow to get there it may well struggle to become popular. Time and money commitments are big issues for a lot of people and splitting either of those across multiple games can be a problem. I play 40k and X-Wing, for example, so adding another game to that list and dividing my time between 3 games rather than 2 isn't likely to happen. I'd also worry about the lack of factions in Legion. Just 2 factions seems a bit bland to me.

This is when I think they will cross the threshold - when they expand their factions. I think Empire vs Rebels will attract many, however I think multiple different factions spread across the eras will turn the game into a much more interesting strategic game, and even better for tournaments. You have to think about A LOT more if you have multiple factions, and it will really impact the meta. Building a squad that can be one or two meta teams on an opposing faction, versus building a squad that can hold out against 1 or 2 meta teams from 5 or 6 factions is a big difference in terms of considerations.
I've played 40k for a few years, but my local 40k group has kind of dried up. Even my buddy I used to play with sold off his armies. I'm really hoping Legion does well and has a good community. If it does and there are lots of opportunities to play, I'll probably eventually sell off my 40k stuff. So I guess the verdict is still out, but if the terms of asylum are favorable then I'll go head and defect.

This. I quit 40k tabletop a few editions back, currently playing X-Wing, but I am looking forward to jumping into Legion.
In the UK probably not that many, we've just seen the RRP of the Legion stuff and it's not cheap. Makes GW look like a cheap hobby

Really? We've not had any grumbles locally. You can get an entire 800pt army for half a starter and a couple of extra boxes. If you can split the starter with somebody that's going to run under £100 at online prices, which is a pittance compared to a 40K army.
I think you will see most 40k players do what we do now, have it as a side game as opposed to whole heartedly dropping one for the other. I do think though in general until some variation occurs in the army lists allowing themed armies and other factions you will see an initial buy in and then many will put them on the shelf waiting for more options. Vanilla storm troopers vs rebel commandoes over and over will get old pretty quick. I am waiting until late next year as the only units that interest me at this point are the scout bikes and AT-ST and obviously I wont be able to have an army of just them. If Snow or Shore Troopers come out enabling a themed list Ill buy in at that point. A droid army would also get my attention as I love the tanks and destroyer droids. But variety is what's needed if the game wants to pick up the wargame crowd as anything more than a simple side game now and then.
