Most likely the best storage solution around

By Holmelund, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Playing Arkham Horror the card game one thing is very quickly apparent, you´ll need storage.

Looking around there is a lot of different options. I´ve seen quite a few really beautiful DIY solutions, but lacking the manual dexterity to duplicate them I kept looking.

I also found quite a few basic storage solution, like the Broken Token, that where easy to assembly, but which are kind of bland.

What I really wanted was something that oozed atmosphere as well as usability, preferably in a ready- made package.

Then I stumbled over http://oplaser.co.uk/shop/

I never looked back.

For what I wanted they had 2 options:

The Arkham Intermediate Antique (The small solution) http://oplaser.co.uk/shop/arkham-intermediate-antique-assembled.html

and

The Arkham Antique (The big one) http://oplaser.co.uk/shop/arkham-antique-assembled.html

They come with different really nice engraving, and as long as you don’t violate copyright the guys at oplaser will be happy to do a different one than their stock 4 options http://oplaser.co.uk/Blog/2017/06/08/logo-choices/

The small solution looked to suit my purpose so I ordered and was pleasantly surprised that shipping wasn’t as cruel as it often is when I order stuff from abroad. From ordering to arrival I waited 11 days.

Unpacking it I was really pleased. The pictures of it had not embellished its awesomeness one bit. It looks and feels really cool and the dividers makes sorting easy.

It´s suitable for sleeved and un-sleeved cards alike and if you don’t mind things to be cramped you could squeeze in 2 cores and 1 of every expansion in the intermediate solution.

It will be a cramped fit but doable.

I didn’t want cramped, so I ordered a second intermediate and sat down to wait. The idea was to have all stories in one and everything for Investigators in the other.

2 weeks later it arrived, or actually it didn’t. Dave decided to upgrade me free of charge to the big one as a surprise. I can´t really complain about that, or on any other part of their customerservice. The primary contact point I have had is with their owner Dave primarily over Facebook. He is very easygoing, friendly and just want his customers to be happy campers. If there is an issue he will do his absolute best to fix it.

Which leads me to the one downside of this storage solution. When you open it fully, it will cause a slight strain on the back side of the panel. I decided it was a negligible issue and used the manual solution of placing something behind the lid to crop up against while I sorted cards. Someone else commented on it via facebook and within minutes Dave had a solution. Hinge retainers. They are easy to install (5 minutes work even for clumsy me) and solves the issue perfectly.

So if you are looking for a storage solution and lack the ability to craft your own I highly recommend the work of Dave and his guys at http://oplaser.co.uk/shop/

Thank you for sharing. One important (to me, at least) question, if you don't mind: how sturdy these cases are? The problem is that with the game expanding, the need of having 2+ will arise, inevitably. I've got a few cases from basicallywooden.co.uk, they promised the cases were sturdy enough to be placed one atop of the other, but truth is that the wood crooked pretty early from the weight of the above box. So, it'd be interesting to know (as said, for me at least) what happens if you pile these boxes: do the structure resist, or the wood crooks? If you have any idea on the matter, I'm all ears :)

They are plenty sturdy.
Im not on my FB atm so I cant find the picture, but Dave at one point posted a picture of 10+cases stored in his office that where stacked op top of each other.

Stacking them will not be an issue for you :)

Let's hope the stacked one were filled with cards :P

But hey, these are good news. Thank you! Really like the items, and was really looking for a way to store the game properly, so, you made my day :)

Thanks, but I'll stick with cardboard and use the money that box costs to buy 3 other games.

I also have the Arkham Antique and it is beautiful and sturdy. I would highly recommend it, although the shipping takes longer than any estimate you can think of. The only structural issue is the hinges, which I believe need some kind of chain to reinforce them. In the meantime I would place filled core boxes (because if you're getting this then you will need more space for the rest of your doodads and accessories, right?) behind the case when it is fully opened to help support the weight of the top lid.

cool cases. I was wondering i play in my club mostly so i would need to transport my decks and maps each time when we play. don't have car so i always travel by foot.
seems like these boxes weight is quite heavy no + if you put all cards in it even more? is it transportable by foot a case like that?

I have the large Arkham Antique case and it is pretty sturdy. The strap handle holds up even when loaded with cards but I wouldn't really carry it by the handle for long periods or when walking as it is bound to give out at some point and it wouldn't be comfortable to carry any distance. I do travel with it but only by car. If you really want to transport it, I would recommend putting it in a backpack or a wheeled suitcase (flight carry-on size is fine). It will still be pretty heavy but should work out. If you don't need to take all your player cards (i.e. if you just need a few pre-built decks, a campaign set, core box encounter cards, chaos tokens etc.) then you are probably better off decanting these into something easier to manage. I've found the Kakapopo cases are pretty good for this.

The other thing to note about the Arkham Antiques is that they look fantastic but you shouldn't expect to hold your entire collection in there. I can pretty much only hold player cards, investigator cards and basic weaknesses, plus a playmat in the tray. All my campaign cards are stored elsewhere. Mind you, I sleeve everything so that makes everything take up more space.

Dave at Oplaser has retired but the cases can now be obtained through: Lasered Games.

These boxes are indeed very heavy, especially when full, and the corners are metal so have a significant potential to cause injury (if dropped on a foot, for instance) or damage (if scraped along wood, for instance). In addition, the leather strap is not suitable for extended carrying, and the clasps that hold the case closed are not exactly the most reliable. I use one of the large Arkham Antique boxes for storing my scenarios with the tray for tokens and spare sleeves, and so far it's the right size for that purpose, but I'll need more scenario storage once the Dreamlands cycle is released.

I second the recommendation for the Kakapopo cases for more lightweight storage and carrying solutions - less attractive as a centrepiece but far more convenient, and much better for transportation by hand.
