Jank tank (U-wing, no hear me out...)

By FlyingAnchors, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I was musing over the wave 12 spoilers and was thinking about the poor U-wing wouldn’t get any love this wave, save maybe a reason to take courier droid. (Cause it’s free) Then I had this crazy idea:

Heff tober

Sabine wren

trajectory simulator

Ion bombs (seismic, thermal, or proton will also work, some at a higher point cost though)

Extra munitions

title

engine upgrade

courier droid (because why not?well, maybe Rey would be better here)

total: 35 points

Now Sabine shines better in the K-wing hands down, so treat this as the more of the casual side of list building.

Idea is to trajectory launch, reveal the 0, pivot, and hope for a bump. Or run into your own bomb range and then try to boost out when they bump you. Or would Cassian make this better, VI up to 8? Or pair this build with Roark for 12? Or just slap this build on the B-wing and call it a day?

anyway, I call this the jank tank because it (on paper anyway) seems like it would be just annoying enough to be irritating, if you can get it to go off.

Possible build partners I would think could be rebel Nym, and Possibly Roark if you wanted to go the higher Ps route. Miranda would also be nice. Anything that’s going to throw lots of damage while you have them tangled bumping you or your ion bomb will work.

Timing charts are friend, not food

Some risks and issues with the build:

  • If you reveal the 0-stop and pivot, you'll be stressed, and unable to perform Heff's free action.
  • Without relying on your boost action, you basically need to pull a hard-2 to get out of your own bomb's radius.
  • Running into your bomb range solely in the hopes of boosting out is pretty risky, since your opponent may end up blocking your escape route(s) with the very ship that bumped, and regardless, you'd be denying Heff the shot.

A better tactic might be to chuck the bomb then stay put, without changing your facing. Assuming you time it right, you're forcing your opponent to either eat the bomb or reposition to escape it, a move that should hopefully land them in your arc. Alternately, you're creating a no-fly-zone in the 5-straight space before you, keeping your opponent out of that region for fear of auto-damage.

I do think it would work better on the B-Wing, though. Your one-straight maneuver will leave you JUST outside of Range 1 from your bomb, making it a relatively safe way to chuck some ordnance into the fray and still maintain your shots.

Hmm I forgot about the stress, maybe kanan should replace courier droid... although I agree this would probably work a lot better on a B-wing.

Brobots or Bot+1 with this trick (With scav crane) sounds like fun.

This thing sounds hilarious if you swap Engine out for APL. If somebody runs right at you bomb them and then hit them with APL if they bump. And for more shenanigans, swap the droid out for BoShek.

I don't think its possible with just that crew (and no Adv. Sensors), but it would be hilarious to toss an ion, do a 0, ion them, hopefully they run into you already, for a bomb plus an APL. Next turn you do a 0 again, their ion runs them into you for more damage. Next turn you do ANOTHER 0 and they get Boshek'd, drop an ion behind you and leave.

Probably would make more sense to take Hera instead of Boshek (so you could actually do this madness). In any event, I love the idea of TS on ships that aren't really supposed to have bombs. Now i'm tempted to take an ultimate Nera with EM, Sabine, a bomb and some sort of torpedo, and take another ship with Target Synch to launch those torpedoes and blow up your enemies (ion them with a bomb and THEN a torpedo!!)

Best,
