The unspeakable Oath - Is there an error in this pack ? (Spoilers)

By Chakado, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Hello all,

I am confused about a particular aspect of this scenario.

The setup tells me to use "The Really Bad Ones" (v. I) if I possess the Clasp of Black Onyx. This Act card allows me to meet the "humanoid", ally version of Daniel Chesterfield.

If I don't have the clasp, I am supposed to use "The Really Bad Ones" (v. II) where Daniel is an enemy, which can be defeated... using the clasp of black onyx that I don't possess.

There's a discrepancy here...

It seemed logical to me that, having burdened myself with the Clasp weakness, I am rewarded by the opportunity to save Daniel Chesterfield (and gain the XP that goes with it...) But how come I can use the clasp to defeat Enemy Daniel ? How can I even meet Enemy Daniel if I have the clasp ?

This is intentional. Presumably, like other assets and characters, this isn't the only time you'll see them. You may be able to recover the clasp later, and meet Enemy Daniel later. Or if you recovered the clasp in the Historical Society and meet Ally Daniel, perhaps he becomes Enemy Daniel at some point.

I thought of that, but :

1) Daniel is dead. OK, this is not necessarily a proof we won't see him again, this is Lovecraft after all. :-)

2) A Mythos pack is not supposed to use Encounter cards from other Mythos packs, only from the deluxe box, right ? So I don't see how a future scenario could use Daniel. We meet Constance Dumaine in this scenario, but this is because she's from the Path of Carcosa deluxe box, not from a Mythos pack.

Given that this cycle is focused on madness and has directly mocked the player in rules text before, I'm guessing it's just a head game. If you play through unspoiled and don't get the clasp, you'll be kicking yourself when you find out how easily you could have won if you'd had it. Alternatively, if you do have it, you'll know that Daniel has an enemy side and there's a good chance you'll see that it references the clasp, so you'll spend the rest of the scenario waiting for him to turn on you.

Yes, Matt confirmed this was intentional. OTOH, the act cards blanking patient confinement was not, and will probably be addressed by a faq.

Wait, what happened on the Act cards? Blanking???? I played the scenario, but not sure what you are talking about

So far each of the two mythos packs scenarios have potentially used one of the cards for the dinner party scenario. A Mythos pack scenario CAN use cards from previous scenarios, they just need an option where the card isn't used. Both of the mythos pack scenarios so far have potentially needed you to use one of the enemy versions of the party guests from the second scenario. They only need to have a situation possible where the card isn't used. For this campaign, if you killed them at the party, they won't come back later - and the specific instruction for playing it as a stand-alone takes that into account.

Acts 2+ blank unrevealed arkham asylum locations, which includes the clue cost of moving into patient confinement locations.

This was an error, and they're looking into fixing it, possibly in the next FAQ.

What do you mean by "blank" as a verb? I'm not understanding your sentence. I'd look at the cards, but my collection is at my friends house where we usually play.

To "blank" is to negate a card's particular rules text (eg, causing the players to treat it as if its text box were blank).

Regarding whether or not Daniel can appear in a future scenario: there is precedent from LOTR of just reprinting the card again in that later pack.

How on earth did that make it through playtesting? My group did that scenario last night and the first thing we thought was "cool, don't need the clues".

We just figured it was a pacing mechanism.

We actually played it as intended. Not sure why we didn't clue in to that discrepancy.
