Crafting False Credentials

By thecableton, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey guys!

My current EotE character is a Smuggler who also dabbles in forgery; documents and so on. He has changed his whole identity a number of times in his backstory. However! To my horror, the need has arisen for him to utilise these skills for the betterment of the group.

I know Special Modifications allows for crafting of simple gadgets, but the GM and I are having trouble justifying the easy mechanics check to create them. He feels it should be harder depending on how detailed the FAKE ID is. Easy for something that's strictly a visual ID, harder for something that can actually pass a scanner

So my question is, can anyone provide some insight to expand on our understanding of the crafting mechanics to help us out? Thanks =D

Physically creating a “blank” ID would be the easy mechanics check, generating functional codes would be the harder part. Fly Casual has some information if you want to do that for a ship, (It’s hard. Don’t mess with BoSS) but I don’t know quite how that would work out with personal IDs. Forgery isn’t touched much in this system.

God forbid an honest crook not want to get caught by the fuzz without paying 800 credits! We're not all made of money!

Thanks, though. That clears up part of the puzzle

forgery rules are in Fly Casual if i recall Correctly

I think it depends on what type of credentials they are trying to forge, and who is scanning the forgery.

If they are just trying to make documents that show them to be Dirk Blastjet, Galactic Postal Inspector, 3rd Class, then it likely wouldn't be too hard, as there isn't a lot of need to scrutinize such an ID. If he's trying to make credentials telling everyone he's Grand Moff Tarkin, that's a significantly more daunting task.

They could do this multiple ways, in my opinion. They could simply use Skullduggery, to represent the familiarity with the physical/visual representation of the credentials, your typical fake ID kind of idea for the act itself. Or, they could use Computers to slice the ID to show the proper displays when it's plugged into a data port. Either route would be sufficient at my table, but would have different difficulties, based on multiple factors.

I would then have the result of the roll, determine how good the forgery is, and use those stats, similar to a disguise's opposed check, on the ID.

I had a thorough flip through and couldn't find any, sadly =(

I'll run it past the GM and see what he thinks, thanks =D

Page 50 fly casual has false credentials.

Slicing encounter rules would be part of forging. I know in one of the books they talk about it.

Wait a month or so for ciphers n masks. It'l have the rules in it for sure

Otherwise FC and SM mixed... maybe 3 checks... 1 pp mechanics for the base ID, 1 ppp skuldudgery for the appearance and 1 pppp computers for the slicing to make them 'real'

Or spend a dp or 2... " done... man that was tricky... but they will pass all but the most rigorous of inspections"

Desperate Allies includes a Falsified Credentials and Forgery Tools. As far as I know, there is no rule to create the a forgery, but I would imagine that if the PC start to abuse of this item, in order to create a reliable credential, they will need the support of the Imperial Database. This might require Slice, credits or Obligation.
