Is it good? Asajj/Thweek/Rounding Error

By LagJanson, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Threw this list together because I wanted to fly both the Lancer and Thweek. I really didn't spend a lot of time on list creation, certainly not as much time as I should have, but it dominated the games I played with it. Now, sample size is low, and I didn't face top tier lists, but I know there must be room to further improve things. Sunny Bounder is more of a placeholder than a full on piece. I didn't like my options with so few points and tossing an ion cannon in for control seemed a good idea. Scyks are fun, so in Sunny went.

  • Asajj (49) - Lone Wolf, Latts Razzi, Glitterstim, Shadow Caster title, Countermeasures
  • Thweek (30) - StarViper MkII, Autothrusters, Virago title, Fire Control System
  • Rounding error - Sunny Bounder (19) - Heavy Scyk title, Ion Cannon
  • 98 points

Play style: I deployed all three ships well separated, Sunny centered on the board. Thweek copies the PS skill (unless it's of no benefit... :( ) - In each match I tried to see what my opponent was targeting and tried to kite them with it and redeploy. Sunny so far has mostly been ignored, and can either act as a blocker or a long range control piece with the ion. All three ships fly independently, but combined can do nasty things.

Notes:

  • Thweek has done good work. Yes, he does not have the action efficiency of a proper high pilot skill ace, but at close range he's been dodging around arcs with that barrel roll and with patience will chew up ships.
  • Asajj is pretty tanky. Ok, I need to not try to tank quite as much as I have so far, it cost me half points in one game. Mostly, I need to learn to fly a large base better. I love that shadowcaster title though vs small base ships.
  • Sunny. Well, then... On one hand I generally have Sunny trigger around once every two games. It's not a bad ability. Secondly, the ion is potent in combination with Asajj. Poor Poe.
  • I didn't get as many good dice modifying actions as I had wanted in my games. There was a lot of repositioning to avoid the worst of the dangers or spinning of Asajj's mobile arc. Thweek had Poe's ability and never triggered it once in a match...
  • I've tried flying a bumpmaster before, my mindset doesn't work for it. I get too focused on trying for a bump and try to force something when it's not there. I'm not going to put one in my list now. I know it's really good but no, not for me.

That seems to be the 'standard' Thweek build. Its pretty common on VASSAL at least.

I've seen a few variations on this list. Scout instead of Ventress, N'dru or Thug instead of Sunny, and even Thweek, Fenn and other mid-30 point ship. So yeah, I'd say its fast becoming a common archetype for Scum. Lots of different ways to build it, but regardless, seems capable against most currently competitive stuff...

It's just seems weirdly... tame.

I think thats my favorite Thweek build!

For Asajj, I might just thweak her a bit: PTL or Expertise seem to be well-appreciated on her. I'd choose PTL. Countermeasures or Gyroscopic Targeting are both nice choices. I don't think the title is necessary, though it has plenty of utility if you have the points.

At that point, while Sunny could be fun, I think a much stronger choice would be a Quadjumper. Trust me, those things are WAY too dangerous for your opponent to ignore. W/ Pattern Analyzer and Spacetug Tractor Array, they can really put a wrench in your opponent's plan, or else they soak the first round or two of shooting if your opponent knows how bad they are. You can flavour to taste after the PA/Tractor Array, including the title on Asajj, or crew/pilots on the QD.

The difference on Asajj between PTL/Expertise and Lone Wolf is aggression vs defense. I love expertise on Ketsyo, but this particular list needed better survivability since it hasn't the firepower to go all aggression. The re-roll on defense when you pop counter measures and glitterstim is wonderful. I love firepower through lack of actions though, so it isn't a "this is better" so much as "this is what I think I need."

I fully agree a Quadjumper can really mess things up if ignored. That said, it's pretty easy to pop. Yes, I realize this is drawing fire, but again, I'm not sure I have enough firepower to tilt things in my favor before the Quadjumper dies. I'm killing all my opponent's ships in matches, but nothing is just 'deleted' as it were.

Then again, this is just my instincts here.

I really like the idea of sunny with linked battery when the new wave comes out. It doesn't take an action, but gives you a decent chance of triggering your ability. This way, he can focus or evade for defense, and still have some offensive mods

As the player of the aforementioned Poe in that match, I have to attest that this build is quite potent, fantastic control elements and Thweek does what Thweek does best

Oop. My list building secrets are out now!

Actually, I've been trying to refine it a bit... I haven't quite settled on the changes. Inaldra, attani. Going to be a bit before trying it. I've got a month before I need to settle on a list anyway.
