Command Token

By PinkMaster123, in Twilight Imperium

In the Status phase, when you redistribute your command token, you gain 2 more. That's means you now have a total of 10 Command token on the turn2. Do you always get 2 more token on every turn? (12token turn 3, 14 turn 4...)

When you use the Leadership Strategie card, you gain 3 token. Do you keep them for the rest of the game?

Thanks for any help!

You merely get two command tokens in addition to what you still have left on your playmat from before. The number you gain doesn't change.

Command tokens are not like commodities. They do not refresh "up to" a certain limit. They are an expendable resource. You regenerate two per turn, but must use other means to get more than that (Leadership Strategy Card, Hypermetabolism, etc). The only limit is that you cannot have more than 16 tokens in total. Given that most players spend more than 2 CTs per round of play, it is important to manage your outflow with your income.

It sounds to me like there's a fundamental misunderstanding of the rules. Command Tokens that are in your Tactic Pool or your Strategy Pool will be spent throughout the round. Spent as in, removed from your playmat, and not returned:

When you take a Tactical Action, you place a Command Token from your Tactics Pool onto the activated system, and at the end of the round, that token is returned to your reinforcements, not your playmat.

When you take a Strategy Action, spending 1 Command Token from your Strategy Pool to activate the secondary effect of a strategy card, it is removed from your playmat and added to your reinforcements.

So unless you spend none - i.e. take no strategy card secondary effects, and take no Tactical Actions (move, attack, a/o build) - then yes, you will have 10 tokens on turn 2. But otherwise, you should definitely be spending at least 2 command tokens per round, either from strategy or tactics.

That would be an interesting mechanic in a different game (or as a crazy variant) though... where the counters on your race sheet represent the total number of things you can do every turn. So if you had 3 tokens in your tactic pool you could take at most 3 tactical actions every round. You could show that a strategy token had been "used" by flipping the counter over to the ship side. Tactic tokens on the game board would be returned to your mat every status phase. Essentially each area of your play mat would function similarly to fleet supply. You would of course have to MASSIVELY increase the price of buying new counters, or enforce some kind of influence upkeep. Maybe reduce the max limit of counters.

I'm not sure what the point of such a variant would be other than an exercise in game (re)design, but it's actually a very cool idea to ponder. Hmm....

Thanks you very much!

Now I see how much is important to manage your Command token
