Acesandeights Terrian and Painting

By acesandeights, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I have been working on some terrain for my x-wing campaign. Just tired of circling the same old rocks and the 100/6 death match. Thought that maybe we could fight some battles in and around something other than asteroids. I build terrain for almost all of my other games but have never built any for x-wing so I figured, why not. However, I didn't want to change the basic rules that are used during actual game play. So I decided to build my terrain using the asteroid and debris tokens as bases and keeping the effects the same. The normal rules for hitting an asteroid or plateau are the same. Hitting a tree is the same as hitting debris, and so on.

So then I needed terrain replacements for all the various types of planets I wanted to include in my campaign.

  • Desert Planet
  • Temperate/Forested Planet
  • Jungle Planet
  • Ice Planet
  • Gas Giant
  • Exotic Planet (funky colored plants etc)

In addition to the planet based terrain I also wanted to include scenarios in locations such as

  • A large city
  • Space Lanes
  • Nebula

I haven't yet finished or even started on everything, but I am slowly working on it. I have sat down and designed most of the terrain I want to create. Now I just have to get to work building everything. I started with what I figured would be the easiest to build, the desert terrain. This is the easiest for me as I have already built this type of terrain before.

IMG_06.jpg.442c9ef8006b97134c38227cb71ce0d6.jpg

Followed by the temperate / jungle rock outcrops. Which are basically the same, but painted different and with foliage.

IMG_05.jpg.f46d4253d7bd9232d679488adb8efd45.jpg

and some large trees, for use as debris.

IMG_07.jpg.199a960721d43d62f002c7a23d281b08.jpg

This is an overhead shot of the terrain next to the tokens that they match. So you can kind of see that they match. I have a better picture but I can't upload it for some reason. Will have to work on that later.

IMG_11.jpg.06f8044691737837f2c9bbeaf1c05e41.jpg

In addition to the terrain I am also working on objectives to blow up and land based defenses to shoot back...and other things.

I will be adding photos as I get done with other projects. I also occasionally paint my ships.

I like the idea but am worried about what to do in case of an overlap, mabe put top down photographs of your work on to the original tokens?

The bases of the terrain are made from copying the tokens. I traced the shape onto the foam then cut it out. So the terrain can set directly on the asteroid or debris token itself. When a ship overlaps you can just pick the terrain up and the token is right under it. When the ship moves, drop it back into place. It's a 3D token basically.

This is the terrain, upside down with asteroid token on it. Same shape, well as close as you can get with a box cutter.

Now here it is on the table.

38635406642_dc36cd294a_o.jpg

See, it lifts up, asteroid token in place.

Awesome work - that's going to be a very nice change for the visuals... without altering the underlying rules in any way.

I'm doing the same. A dessert table with elements for generic dessert, Tatooine and Jakku. Another one WIP volcanic for Mustafar, Dathomir and so. I can't decide about next table - maybe green, maybe white...

Thanks. The campaign part of my master plan adds to / changes the rules enough, so I thought I would leave the basics alone. :)

Cool. What are you doing for the volcanic table if you don't mind me asking? I was thinking of doing eruptions to replace the asteroids and steam vents for debris replacements. Though, I am not sure I can pull off the eruptions ;) so I would be open to some alternatives if you have any.

The ice planet has me stumped for terrain as well. I could just do basic rock formations painted gray, or white...but I would really like to change it up.

Ice planet - fog, snowstorm - set up turret / gun emplacements... Shield generators...

Tall thin lava vents, along a similar style to the rocky outcrops above, could be the asteroids. (On a lower gravity planet, the volcanoes could be tall and thin, less like our squatter ones.)

Smoke plumes (and steam vents, of course) could be the debris.

Love the jungle outcrops. And the fact that they're the same shape as the obstacles.

Stone pillars with lava inside. Or volcans on tubular shape, as you prefer. More or less like this 0cc1d0abbc9a398a44c654bd3751caba_origina

Or this c36dcf184bc4316ca8cd04f05354b1a0.jpg

at the size you like or even with the official asteroids templates as base.

For decoration I'm doing investigation/factory buildings and a landing plattform.

That is a great idea! Kind of makes me want to build a scenic table...got any ideas for Scarrif-Style palm trees at X-Wing scale?

No kidding! This is such an obvious way to add some eye candy on the table, that I can't believe I hadn't come across this kind of "mod" to debris/asteroids before. Maybe it was a thing before I began playing but all I've ever really seen is people gluing lava rocks to dowels, or pre-fab space stations.

I am all over the gun emplacements and turrets. I have been working on those for a while now. Will put up a few pictures in the next post. Also, I was going to make a shield generator out of some Hubba Bubba containers but I think I found one on Etsy I like much better. Hoping to get some extra cash for x-mas so I can pick that up.

Excellent point about the lava vents. My thoughts were to use something like these Armor cast, especially the 43-60mm ones towards the bottom of the page, but I don't think the 43mm ones will be tall enough and the 60mm ones go to far out to the side. I still might be able to make them work anyway.

This, definitely this! These are cool as ****. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Industrial factory building will be cool. I've been working on some landing platforms. I have some really easy ones that I have made, but I am making several different types as I haven't decided which I like the best. They will be in my next post, unpainted of courses.:D

I don't much about palm trees, like how high they grow. If they do grow tall enough to be used as debris, then yeah, I could totally build some small islands with palm trees. I have built some 28mm palm trees, same thing, only smaller, should be no problem (famous last words)

Thanks, I've seen a few people also use trees but that's about it. Once I got started on the idea that "asteroids" and "debris" are just fluff, and can be re-skinned as anything I want, the ideas started rolling in.

That is...wow. An amazing compliment.

So this week has been much more hectic than anticipated, but I have managed to get some work done.

Not much painted, but construction on various bits and pieces is moving along.

The first thing was building some quick and easy landing pads for fighter sized ships. These are made from two chocolate milk container lids. I really liked the ribs on the outside, really adds some depth. I simply added the landing area, which I wanted to look kind of like industrial metal flooring. For this I just cut out a circle from the top of my to go box from the taco place down the street. After gluing that on I wrapped a strip of cardstock around the edge to cover up the seam. Still needs some paint but that took all of about 10 minutes for both.

25033104828_6eca92df61_o.jpg

Next up are my Satcom stations. These will be used as targets for objective / bombing missions. They still need a final coat of pain and some detailing but they are nearly done.

25033102228_c39ea67987_o.jpg

This is supposed to be a radar station. Another objective piece. Looks like I need to glue the corner back in place. Also needs a final coat of paint and detailing.

25033103878_48ee4893b6_o.jpg

These pieces are designed to be Anti-Aircraft turrets. “They’re older models sir, but they check out!” They may need some touch up around the base, but otherwise they are done. I was thinking to make them all linked turrets that all fire at one target at a time. Probably go with, 1 Attack/0 Evade/2 Hull/ 0 Shields. All turrets at Range 1 fire as a group, all range 2 turrets fire as a group, all range 3 turrets fire as a group. The target gets it’s evade dice against each group of turrets firing.

25033106778_7d1a62c23b_o.jpg

25033105388_1f67c67172_o.jpg

These are my in progress mining platforms for use as “asteroids” on gas giant planets. Eventually they will be based on either clear acrylic asteroid tokens or on wooden bases covered with cotton balls painted to match the mat they go on. To simulate little wispy clouds of gas being sucked up into the hoses hanging underneath.

25033104548_ea1795dc4c_o.jpg

25033104298_dbb6c2ca0e_o.jpg

They are made from some acrylic hex’s I picked up from the goodwill store. I have no idea what they were originally for. I covered them with a bit of the old taco box, 3 corn, 2 spicy, 1 carnitas. The rest are just bits and pieces, twisted bread ties, cardboard tubes topped with punch-outs from x-wing bits, vending machine bubble thingies, paper covered wood block.

...and finally, my test piece, which is just a small plastic Empire State building with some cotton around it. This is for my city board, I was thinking to do a mat with all clouds, then have buildings surrounded by more clouds as “asteroids”, and for debris I was thinking either just clumps of cotton balls for clouds. Maybe some clouds with radio antenna, satellite dishes sticking out. Just to show that there is the possibility of hitting some small bits, or maybe there isn’t anything in there at all. who knows.

25033105118_7cd290a23c_o.jpg

It reminds me a bit of the old Crimson Skies video games. So I think it will look pretty cool with some x-wings and tie fighters zipping between buildings.

Well deserved though. I would love to play some matches with these 3-D terrain pieces.

@acesandeights Wow. Really great re-use of found objects. I think I'm going to give both the outcroppings and the mining platforms a try this winter break. Goodness knows there will be lots of junk to re-purpose once Christmas is here.

Also, I can't tell you how happy I am to see someone get some use out of the circles that get punched out of the X-wing cardboard. I always felt they could have some other purpose and feel bad about throwing them away (am I the only one?).

For the turrets: what are you using for the domed part? Marbles? and the gun is a pin stuck into a small piece of dowel?

As an aside, some of your stuff looks like it would make for some "set dressing" once Legion gets here.

Good work all around!

No, you're not alone. I used to keep them 'just in case' but eventually dumped them in the recycle bin.

Well yes, I collect tons of little bits and pieces. I have boxes upon boxes of weird little things. I like being able to find uses for the leftover stuff from the x-wing packaging. That's why most of my bases have little blue round stickers on the bottom with my initials scrawled on them like I'm 8 again.

Turrets; 1" metal washer, wooden craft spool, teddy bear eyeballs freshly pried from your wife's cherished childhood woobie, copper wire shoved into a bit of drilled out plastic dowel.

Okay, okay the teddy bear eyeballs I got from the Science Surplus Store a couple of years ago. They have great stuff btw.

So after I super glued the teddy bear eyeballs in place I realized that if I had put those circles from the punch out bits on top, it would look suspiciously like a DF.9 Turret. Search your feelings, you will know it to be true.

I have been working on making explosions for use as replacement scenic elements for destroyed gun turrets, and other things that need to be blown to bits. Too that end I have been attempting to make these out clump foliage for many weeks now. I have not been having much success as the material turns into a soggy mess, and falls apart anytime you come near it with glue. Super glue worked a bit better, and adhesive spray actually worked the best, but took over a week to cure. So far this is the best I have managed to produce. Also, it's a surly ..... to paint.

38974631201_9cbb99d457_o.jpg

My sad, sad little POS.

So today I had an idea, I wasn't sure it would work, but I tried it out.

38974631051_4aae0694d7_o.jpg

"ah snap, we're under attack!"

38974630931_9ac34ae760_o.jpg

pew, pew, "Die rebel scum!"

38974631151_48a4edbfb7_o.jpg

"holy **** bruh! We actually hit something."

Also, this...38974630951_7b432a7709_o.jpg

and this...

38937760012_3607077268_o.jpg

So...yeah, I think method two works much better, and as a bonus it isn't rage inducing.

Method 2 is more successful.

I like the first method as well, but for other applications (SW Legion) since it looks like cool alien foliage.

How is method 2 created?
