Tray with Templates...contemplating the dive.

By clanofwolves, in X-Wing

You guys recommend a good quality set of templates in a tray with a magnified kinda cover? I have seen a few in passing and they seem like they'd be an awesome addition to my game.

Plus, I'm now destroying the third (out of four) set of cardboard OEM templates......their days are quite numbered, pardon the pun.

I've gotten to that point I'm considering a tray as well. I'm cheap though and with plywood boards and the tools I have I've been contemplating making my own. Still stuck at the layout stage though...

It would be cheaper based on time just to buy a tray from etsy.

I'll double LagJanson ... Highbridge Design does good work and has several options.

For $35 you can get the tray and a full set of acrylic templates . ($40 if you get the range rulers as well.)

If you have access to a scroll saw (or are really good with a jigsaw), you can easily make your own with hardboard. I made 3 so far out of 1 4'x8' sheet of hardboard that was super cheap, and I've got a ton leftover. You get to shape it exactly how you want it, which is a bonus.

From prototype:

To the latest version, a year later, which was my son's 7th birthday gift (with the templates):

It has a reversible cover, Phoenix-themed, and fits his 1-straight placeholder too. He keeps wanting to stack all the ones he wins in there, it's bursting at the seam now!

Aren't acrylic range rulers thinner than the cardboard one in the box? I think it may be best to not get the one without the range ruler slots.

I have the scroll saw, drill press, and small magnets to get fancy. I've even got materials. Like I said, layout and time.

Love the paint job you did there.

Depends. I have an acrylic that's wider and an acrylic that's thinner. That's where @clanofwolves has the right idea to get everything from the same source.

If layout is the issue, I've got this one in a printable Word document somewhere. Spray glue it on and off you go!

Actually, I just got finished tracing my templates onto paper... I may try to see if I can do a bit today.

For you?

If you want magnets they can add them, just write them a mail. They have some with magnets already, but the "painted" ones come so far without lids and magnets per default.

...and now I have a tray. Need to sand the outside edges, drill for magnets and paint but that's all easy stuff. Thank you for the inspiration.

@LagJanson , well done! Be sure to upload photos! You're going to love having a tray. It makes playing so much easier when all of the templates stay organized. Did you put little holes at the end so you could pop up the templates by pushing on the end?

For those without the inclination to DIY, I make a few different sizes of trays over at Highbridge Designs. There's the standard size that's been linked above, and there's a tray specifically designed to fit a Feldherr Mini bag. https://www.etsy.com/listing/547347639/x-wing-template-tray-for-feldherr-mini

If you're looking to upgrade the shoebox you've been using to move your ships around at tournaments, I make trays for that too that stack with the magnets in the template trays.

I'm also making a 5" wide version for crowded tournaments without much space. Should have a batch of those made up before long.

To be fair, I had something I was using to pile everything on to move from table to table, but it can be precarious. I didn't put holes at the ends, no. I have made a few cuts to the template... Um... Shapes? to make room to grab things. I'm sure a laser cutter, more experience and better planning would make a better tray. Still have an idea or two I'd like to experiment with.

Glue is drying but I'll take a few pics later and a few more when finished.

Couldn't imagine playing without these:

I've ordered from these guys (MagicWorks) before, and can verify the fantastic quality! They've slightly changed the design so that the templates are now "push pop" accessible, which will be a lot easier to grab than before.

Image doesn't want to embed, but here's the link to what they did for me.

another option, which I find helps with the available room on the tables, are trays from " Wookie Woodcraft " They are hand made wood trays which are a labor of love. Absolutely beautiful. They take up far less room and come in a few different options. They do cost a few pennies however, but I find they are a great solution for holding all your stuff on the board. Not so good with transporting everything like the mag boards already discussed.

I recently made the decision to splurge on a bunch of Applied Perspectives swag, and have been loving it. Their tourney tray has slots for the range 1-3 templates that came from the Store Championship kit. My favorite part is probably the obstacle tray, which keeps all my asteroids, debris and cargo chutes sorted for easy access.

Also highly recommend their magnetized range 1-5 ruler for epic.

Looks like they're doing a Black Friday/Cyber Monday thing today.

Now this is a real beauty. I want one. :D Makes me wonder if FFG would give me the original file if I ask nicely, because MagicWorks totally does custom arts in their kickstarter for 5€ extra. :)

my only beef about the trays is personally every tournament ive been to space is unheard of. You have barely enough space to put your stuff down and nowhere near enough space to neatly organize your templates.

I like the vertical stands because they take less tablespace. But thats just me.

Everyone i know that has one either doesnt even bring it to tournaments or has it teetering off the edge just waiting for a hair to land on the edge and tip it over.

it's pretty nice in person @SEApocalypse I've almost ordered one myself, but have way too much swag!

I have gotten into making my own template trays as well. It takes me about an hour to saw the templates (using a scroll saw). After that I figure about an hour to sand and fine tune the dimensions. While I do have a laser engraver, there is nothing stopping somebody from tracing a pattern onto the plywood. I used some SVG template files I found online (but I can't remember exactly where I found them otherwise I would give credit where credit was due).
