List Juggler:

The other day, I was musing "how come no one talks about Dash anymore" and figured perhaps he'd been knocked out of the meta. Nope, still right up there in Meta-Wing. I guess folks just don't talk about the list.

One thing to consider is what assumptions are safe to make and try and figure out whether we can test for them. The biggest one is one metawing uses: that we can treat the aggregate results from different regions/countries in the list juggler as one large meta. I think the coverage from podcasts, various online communities and the reinforcement that metawing itself spreads lists enough that we broadly can, but I don't know for sure. It's something I want to look at though, particularly Europe vs. North America. Possibly also Poland vs. everywhere else because I don't know what's going on there :D There's clear cases where metas aren't comparable - when the legal products differ, i.e. between different waves or when FAQs aren't yet in effect.

The reason I mention this is because I think it determines how meaningful swiss data can be. If we can treat the juggler data as one large representative meta then we can use the bulk swiss results we do have, even if only a handful at a particular event as representative of the actual meta but sampled with a bias towards the top performing lists. We can can try to correct for that bias (with a bunch of assumptions). I've messed around with this a little bit but the attempts to correct for the number of missing lists haven't revealed anything particularly different from the cut results about the current meta yet. This is what the filled list bias looks like versus the swiss percentile for different sized events though:

Can you explain what's going on here? Are the underlying data histograms for number of swiss rounds won? Are you only including 6 round tournaments?

I love all the jokes about X-wing being a children's game. Please point out to me the many, many children playing the game. I know of a handful at best.

Grown children, that we have plenty of, but not actual ones.

Massachusetts Regionals this weekend had 136 players.

http://lists.starwarsclubhouse.com/get_tourney_details?tourney_id=4218

Lists past the Top 16 will be filled in by TO to avoid pranksters.

There were 12 rebels, 3 imperials, and 1 scum to make the cut, but I think the Scum player might have dropped, making it 13 rebels and 3 imperials. Either way, swiss #'s 1-8 were all Rebels.

There were 9 Ghost / Fenn lists.

  • 5 of them made the cut.
  • 1 of them got knocked out in Top 16 in a mirror match.
  • 2 of them got knocked out in Top 16 to other 3 ship rebel lists with Lowhhrick + stuff.
  • The other 2 made it to the final table.

The tourney was won by John DiMaggio from NYC. Really nice guy, and he went 10-0 overall to take it home. He recently graduated from medical school so I don't know how much practice time he has been able to get, but he is a very strong player. He deserves the win after his 2015 run: in 2015 at Massachusetts Regionals he had a perfect 1200 MoV in Swiss (RAC / Fel before half points), and didn't lose a single ship the entire tournament until the final table, when Fel got one-shot rolling 5 natural blanks (he then lost).

Coincidentally, in the two times that we have both gone to Massachusetts Regionals, I have taken a slightly sub-meta list (this time intentionally), I lose my 6th round to go 4-2 and miss the cut, while he goes undefeated in Swiss and ends up on the final table. Maybe he is just bad luck for me, because those are my two worst performances in large events. ;-) Hopefully someday we get the chance to play!

I was flying @Kelvan 's "Woodchipper":

  • 2x PS2 Gunboats + HLC + Linked Battery + Long Range Scanners
  • PS2 TIE Aggressor + TLT + Lightweight Frame
  • PS2 TIE Bomber + Vader crew + Courier droid

I had devised an opening the night before on vassal that let me get long range scanners target locks, then get into a fortress with breakout options on either board edge (side or bottom), all with ships at 90 degree angles. I fortressesed for 1-3 rounds in most of my games and then broke out once I knew I could force an engagement in an optimal spot for me. It worked perfectly, I was able to force a joust in all 5 games (I had a round 1 bye) even vs multiple high PS arc dodgers, but unfortunately I still only went 4-2 and #20th overall (21st but I think the top 16 Scum player dropped).

My highlight of the day was blocking a full health Asajj off the board with an unexpected 5k from my Bomber that set up the off-the board block 2 turns later. She still had 4 glitterstim and 2 countermeasures left (Jabba).

Downer of the day was losing on stream round 6 (go watch on skull squadron stream!), getting the nearly perfect engagement against Quickdraw / 2x PS4 deadeye harpoon gunboats, with QD out of the fight for a nice 4v2.... and then my 15 red dice failed to kill his gunboat including an unavoidable crit from Vader. I made some minor errors / guesses later that prevented me from being able to really stay in the game, but when your HLCs do 0 damage in the first 2 combat rounds with this list you're basically toast. My opponent played well after that to take advantage of the situation and made it to Top 8, in his first time making the cut, so kudos to him! Despite getting wrecked it was a fun game.

Why do you spend time in your day going on the internet to read about tournament results for a kids board game?

I'm kinda surprised ghosts are still that dominant in some places. Over here their popularity already faded as most people have adapted their lists to beat them.

There’s enough flexibility in the archetype to adjust to certain counters. In my area, people were shifting over to using Expertise to counter Rebel Rau to have Rau counter that by switching to the Stressbot.

It’s definitely something that can be countered and teched for, but it’s still super solid.

Yeah, we had that too. People just switched to using either yorr to intercept the stress or simply put double expertise in their list and started focusing fenn agressively. He's not that durable and when he's gone, ghost's main defence is crippled. Ever since, playing ghost became a very binary experience. You either win big or lose big and for most of the top players that became too inconsistent.

We’ve seen similar measures and they’ve had varying degrees of success, though the ones I have witnessed weren’t quite so binary as the ones you’ve seen. What skill levels have you seen in these match ups?

Wow, this has got to the smallest US Regional since the 2014 Season moved to actual Regions.

This is what happens when a community buries an event on the second biggest family-time holiday weekend in the States, effectively turning it into a local tourney for folks with minimal family commitments.

I can't even remember a Store Championship that was less than 50 players around here in the past couple years...

Which holiday was this weekend? I think it was Hoth.

No holidays were this weekend. This thread has been heavily necro-ed, if you note the date on my post it is from way back in November. I was referring to the fact that the PA Regional was scheduled for Thanksgiving Weekend, a time when most folks in the states are traveling and spending time with family.

Doh, I was looking at two different threads at the same time, so I was probabaly in that mindset!

Reasonably high. Players who would typically make it to top 4 in a large tournament. Recently though, Ghost/Fenn is becoming more popular amongst mid-level players, because as long as they're lucky with their matchups it allows them to make the cut, which is something they'd normally struggle with. They rarely get further than top 8 but hey, they get the fancy dice and that's all they hoped for anyway. Meanwhile the very best players have switched to stress control and other stuff that works well against expertise lists they expect to see.

Makes sense. That pattern seems to match what I remember of past meta lists like triple scouts and the like. I think factors that keep Ghost/Fenn lists from being more universally downgraded is the variations you can have from the basic archetype (I have some people in my area using with Kanan instead of the Lothal Rebel and other alterations), and the factor of some areas only having one or so big tournaments in range make it appealing to take a proven list and just worry about your flying.

I'm thinking this might be what Worlds will look like at the top (see below).

Faded due to the salt and the boorishness; it's averagely believed by most all parties that the squad is OP, un-fun to fly, and un-X-Wing as the original game was developed and therefore not accepted by the old-school. Heck, most people I know that love Star Wars but don’t play the game don't even recognize the ships. Maybe some lists CAN beat them, but none have an easy task at that, it's far too loaded.

Tech-ed for yes, but it still has the best overall toolbox for top players to win with (on percetages alone) if they lower themselves enough to fly it (yeah, that's my personal salt, haha). And at Worlds, I think most will do just that, in droves.....so will the mid-level and amateurs.

I pray not, but I fear so.

Well, I wouldn’t say lower themselves to fly it (a little salt of my own), but I do expect to see it quite a bit at Worlds. However, with the results we see recorded here, I doubt it will show up in quite “droves” level.
