Can a hero sell his starter weapon and be weapon-less?

By FSD, in Imperial Assault Campaign

Odd issue that may come up tonight.

My heroes are getting ready to upgrade before we start the next mission. They are sitting on 500 credits. Fenn has upgraded his weapon and Diala has her rewarded lightsaber and sold her starter weapon a few missions ago. Everyone else still has their starter weapon.

I know now they will be looking to upgrade Gharkaan tonight. He and Fenn can sell their starter weapons to bring the total to 600 credits but there are a few 650 melee weapons at Tier 2 that might be pulled.

Could Gideon sell his weapon and be within the rules even if he had no weapon to use?

Yes, class cards ("starting weapons") can be sold for 50 credits each.

Class Cards
Some heroes, such as Drokkatta, have a Class deck that includes
Item cards with an XP cost. These cards can be purchased with XP
like any other Class card and are used like other items of the same
type. If a player wishes to sell any of these items after purchasing
them, he may do so for 50 credits like any other Item card without
a listed credit cost.

...but, what you're asking is whether a hero can sell their last weapon and head into a mission unarmed? Hm... that is a good question.

I mean, it’s not necessarily a smart option to send Gideon into battle unarmed but he’s maybe actually attacked 5 times over the course of 4 missions. We all know Gideon’s role.

Yes, a hero can be weaponless. There is no minimum number of weapons that a hero can equip; only a maximum of 2.

Yes.

It limits the flexibility though, so only do it if you absolutely need 50cr more.

There is one mission (Captured), that lays out rules for "unarmed" combat. I think it says the hero has to roll GY and can only do melee attacks. Perhaps this can also be applied to other missions.

If you want to house rule it in you can, but otherwise it is only for that mission.

Gideon really doesn't need to attack. In our one campaign he shot once the entire campaign. Especially if he has masterstroke and mobile tactician. Two command, 6 movement points (strain move twice), rest and/or interact.

Props to any Gideon player willing to go weaponless, that is a hardcore Gideon player that has embraced the character. Just look at his art, do you see a gun? Just a cane. (Yes I realize it's supposed to be a holstered gun, but I see a stylish cane knob that's only there as a fashion statement).
