No.

You take a point of damage.

The rules are explicit at that point, becuse no hull zone is defined, you must choose a hull zone.

Damage is automatically applied to shields in that case.

RRG, Page 4 "Damage"

• When a ship suffers damage, it suffers that damage one point at a time. For each point, reduce the shields in the defending hull zone by one. If the defending hull zone has no shields to lose, deal a facedown damage card to the ship instead.

• When a ship suffers damage and a hull zone isn’t specified, the ship’s owner chooses which hull zone suffers all of that damage.

There is no 'may' take it on shields. For each point, reduce the shields. Then damage card if there's no shields.

Got it. I can still make my plan work, just need to spend my rear shields/ move them to the front as I take damage there.

Oops, did that wrong the other night. Took a Jerry tax to the hull on a fully shielded ISD, landed on the station and discarded the damage card. I forgot about the sequential requirement (shields then hull). As usual @drasnighta, you prove yourself to be the Armada rules expert and I’ve relearned something.
