Chopper astromech + VI

By player2072913, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Say my squad contains

Luke Skywalker — X-Wing 28
Veteran Instincts 1
"Chopper" (Astromech) 1
Fenn Rau (Sheathipede) — Sheathipede-class Shuttle 20

Fenn Rau moves at PS9, then as his action coordinates to luke. Luke uses chopper to discard VI for a shield. This drops his PS to 8. When does he move?

By the example of Tel's pilot ability activating and discarding a PS0 crit during the combat phase after PS7 has already shot, he doesn't.

Yeah, think it is basically a missed opportunity type of thing. Though that could possibly be a good thing, as it gives Luke a stop maneuver for the turn.

I found this too:

So this problem has been known about with with Epsilon ace or Boba Fett crew. Do they just miss activation or does this need a FAQ??

As noted, there's FAQ precedent that they just miss out on activation.

This is a little messy since the FAQ precedent is regarding the combat activation which is optional. Movement activation however is not optional, as you cannot choose to stay put instead of moving your ship and anything that is not optional cannot be considered a missed opportunity.

There was an email response from Frank Brooks about this earlier this year:

Quote
Rules Question:
If Epsilon Ace receives a damage card during the activation phase, when does he activate? Example: Miranda Doni (PS8) with Sabine Wren crew and Proximity Mines equipped activates and drops a Proximity Mine template that overlaps Epsilon Ace. Epsilon Ace takes a point of damage from the mine and a second point of damage from Sabine's effect. Epsilon Aces loses a shield and receives a damage card. Since Epsilon Ace has a damage card, the effect from his ability stops. When does he activate?

A. Since PS4 makes Epsilon Ace the lowest PS ship that has not activated, he is the next ship to activate.
B. He doesn't activate at all this activation phase since PS8 ships have already activated.
C. He activates at PS12 since he started the activation phase with that PS.
D. None of the above.
He would activate as the next ship since he has the next lowest pilot skill."

This seems to make the most sense since activating a ship in the Activation Phase is a mandatory game effect.

Definitely needs FAQ. Frankmail responses have been proven incorrect by FAQ before.

(That's how I think it ought to work, both in combat and in activation, but it explicitly doesn't work that way in combat, which is the only precedent thus far)

is there a place where one can find these "frank emails"?

Yes .

Questions like this thread are why activation/combat needs to be updated to "next lowest/highest" PS instead strict by-the-numbers.

Thanks so much! I did not know that thread existed!

Hmm...

So by that logic, using chopper to discard Adaptability (Decrease) would let Luke activate twice in a turn, once at PS7 and once at PS8....
