When you still have shields and you get a crit, do you still have take the card to see what the result is?

No, regular critical damage goes into shields first and then when it hits hull is when you draw cards.

There ARE many abilities or effects that CAN bypass shields but they are usually clearly indicated: Proton Bomb, Wampa, Kylo Ren's 'I'll show you the dark side' - those I can think of easily

If you Suffer Damage, it hits shields if you have any and if so no card is dealt. If you are Dealt a (Faceup or Facedown) card, it ignore shields and you just take the card.
